ok here the thing, I don't know how you danse in america, but classic danse is french, and Im french and I danse; The video above shows : Tombé - Pas de bourré - Grand jeté!! not a saut or pas de chat. How can you mistake that. Maybe you use different words in english but, normaly the name are he same. Otherwise that would an insult to the classic danse lol! just accept that...
I'm french, we created classic dance, please don't say stupid things, it is not a saut de chat it is un grand jeté !! you can do it with developé ! saut de chat is a small jump one leg after the other...
@lkfredd definetely a grand jeté developpé in this video. I do classic danse in france, and we have created classic danse in europe:france, so I really know it lol just write grand eté on youtube and you will see that ;)
Maybe it's just because I come from the Cecchetti method (I'm guessing this is Russian), but that preparation was just so exaggerated looking that it made me laugh!
@noachka Listen to this person, there are so many methods and syllabuses out there. There's not point in arguing! The lady in the video did the movement perfectly, so that's all there is.
@killbunnysforbois She may have done the movement well, that is not what I am arguing about (actually, I don't think I am arguing about anything). It is a question of terminology. Perhaps in other syllabi, there is no discrimination between grand jete and grand pas de chat.
just to clarify for anyone watching this: this is NOT a grand jete, it is a saute de chat. In order for a jete of any kind to actually be a jete, the leg must me brushed forward. In a grand jete, the front leg remains straight and comes up as if in a grand battement. In a saute de chat, the front leg comes through develope as is seen in this video. This is a miscommunication that is becoming much to common amongst dance students, so I felt I had to clarify.
oh my gosh people really?! stop being so critical about what this video calls the jump and about how "bad" she is! are you all so bored with your own lives that you have to come on here and say negative comments just to make yourself feel better??
Grand jeté is done with both your legs extended. This is a grand pas de chat because she bends her knees. This is what vaganova (russian) school says. I don't know if she follow some other syllabus and they call steps with other names.
I'm a vaganova ballet teacher, we call this jump a grand pas de chat because your leg has to dévélopé to reach that extension, in grand jeté your leg must be already straight when you jump. ^_^
But I think this is not vaganova and maybe they don't make the difference between the two jumps.
this is definitely a saute de chat, not sure how to spell that. a grande jete involves a jete, meaning the knee does not bend and go into a develope like it does in the saute de chat, which she clearly did in this video, look at the front leg
DO NOT DEVELOPE THE LEG AT ALL DURING A GRAND JETE!!!! you are only allowed to develope the leg in a saut de chat. also the preperation was way overdone
@TeamTARDIS2015 huuhh ?? no. saut de chat is like a jump where u do kind of like 2 retirés ... it's hard to explain without showing it but this IS a grand jeté for suure.
@FyreBalletDancer Not for us. A saut de chat is a grand jete where you devlope the front leg. What you tried to describe to me sounds like a russian stag in my book.
@TeamTARDIS2015 ok, i didnt know u called it like that. for the russian step, we have that to. the saut de chat for us is kind of like the russian step only it's one leg at the time and u travel on the side while doing it.
There are differences in schools and methods in some, this is called a grand jeté through développé, in others it is a saut de chat. They're both correct depending on your ballet training background. Don't diss her! She's amazing.
omg i hope this isn't offensive but i cracked up when she floats of the screen at the end haha. but honestly, people need to stop criticizing...honestly. i don't see most of you putting up vids of yourself doing this...just stop
This particular jump will arise many discussions. In france (and most of europe) it's known as a Grand Jeté Développé while in US and Cuban methods is refered as Saut de Chat. It's like discussing if "Bras en couronne" is the 3rd or 5th position of the arms...
@queeenofbubbles je suis d'accord avec toi, je sais pas ce qu'ils ont XD, mais je suis dans une ecole americaine et ils savent faire la difference, mais bon il semblerait qu'il a peu de danseurs eduques correctement.
What is going on with all the comments? Does anyone here know ballet terminology?
Grands jetés start with a grand battement of the front leg. Sauts de chats are similar to grands jetés, but one dévelopés the front leg. This looks like either a saut de chat or a sloppy grand jeté.
STOP arguing about saut de chat/grand jete blah blah blah.
In some schools, they are two different things; grand jetes are brushed. thats probably been covered a million times but im saying it ALL AGAIN.

First of all, yes, this IS a grand jete. Second of all, haven't any of you ever seen Russian ballet dancers performing this step? Relaxing the knee of the back leg is a common trick/technique and is considered quite acceptable, even standard.
@kdub10009 First no this is NOT a grand jete. A grand jete is done with 2 straight legs and a saut de chat is done with the legs developeeing out .... which is what she did

It's just a matter of style. To me this port de bras looks just perfect. There is no "right" or "wrong" way - it's a matter of style. She was obviously trained in a more Balanchine oriented way. Which i personally PREFER.
