@jaydubs19208 - Many VSTs are only available online (Vengeance Producer Suite for example), but a vast majority are available in music stores, though you might pay more for the boxed versions.
great tutorial! how did you go about eqing the bass before adding multiband distortion? Also, when using multiband distortion, is it necessary to add a sub layer?
@JHiZ06 - For the EQ on the bass, I did a -3db reduction on the 80-150hz spectrum to leave some room for the kick to come through. I also killed just a bit of the 300hz and 700hz (narrow cuts) to remove some of the problem bass frequencies. 300hz specifically is just muddy on most things. With Ohmicide, it's not always necessary to use a sub layer as you can just boost that band on the plugin. If you are going to use a separate sub layer I wouldn't put that through the multiband distortion.
@JHiZ06 - Sometimes if I have layered bass sounds I split them and just put the higher frequencies through the distortion and let the sub ones be clean. This gives the listener the perception of distortion and retains the solid sub.
@vtgbeats yeah i do the same thing but just to be sure, multiband distortion plug-ins like ohmicide essentially is used so you don't have to do the split frequency technique right?
@JHiZ06 - This could be one application, yes. You could just distort the higher frequencies and leave the subs clean. Be sure not to use the pre-distortion if you plan on doing this as your sub clarity will suffer. The other benefit is that you can use different distortions on different bands. Also, you can spread open the stereo spectrum on bands independently using Mid Side.
My basses are usually 2-3 synths playing in unison. I keep the sub clean and heavily compressed. Highs are distorted.
my name is Endium and I have a very particular request for a tutorial. this request might be difficult for you as it may not be as well. there is a producer named Big Chocolate. He uses homicide to create crazy bass sounds with modulation but in his tutorials he fails to explain how he does it. i feel that he might be modulating the bands to create expressive sounds. since i can't post the link of what i am talking about please search Big Chocolate (HiLion) for the song example. hopeugetbac
That was a great tutorial
