I think what westerners just cannot understand is the complete lack of empathy and emotional connection that China and Japan have with regard to animals. From 2003 statistics, shark catch per capital is higher in UK, and UK export MORE sharks than Japan. UK import more sharks than Japan as well (UK is about 9-10 major importer).
