Fantastic performance! Furious and passionate! An amazing piece of music! Expertly directed by someone who obviously understands music in general, string quartets specifically and did his homework on this piece.
Editing to the score! Has this been done this well before or since? One can visually keep track of all the fugal entrances. I never grow tired of this awesome production.
This is a pure river of acoustic light. Beethoven has spoken to the entire universe with his works and this is one glowing example! Great performance by these young'uns too!
I didn't know these guys. They are VERY good. Actually they play this movement a lot better than the Alban Berg quartet (see their video on utube). This is closer to the best versions I know of (Emerson and Amadeus). Bravo!
The scherzo movement of the quartet, the third movement (Allegretto), uses a Russian theme also used by Modest Mussorgsky in Boris Godunov. However, Beethoven used it in an ungentle way. According to Kerman, "It sounds as though Count Razumovsky had been tactless enough to hand Beethoven the tune, and Beethoven is pile-driving it into the ground by way of revenge."

The reaction to his op. 59 quartets was not positive. The musicians thought they were too difficult (they are maddeningly tough). This was very "new" music at the turn of the century (19th). Beeethoven's quartets were the most experimental of anything he wrote.
i agree....it's a sublime masterpiece....(probably not appreciated in 1808).....as is the 3rd movement from the a minor op 132 quartet...as is the mind-boggling double fugue from the missa solemnis...etc.
I loved this performance (I couldn't help but applaud even though I was alone) and the film was cleverly and expertly done. And I liked how Patricia took a little liberty on her brief solo.
I love the beautiful back of the first violin girl, LOL!!!! By the way, wonderful performance!

This is a knockout piece! All Beethoven's pieces are knockout pieces!
Fantastic performance!
I am still amazed at how jazzy and avant-garde (by even today's standards) Beethoven's later works became (e.g. especially his last piano sonata).
