This is a great way to learn how to cheat your fujimi's!!!!! Even the girl in orange handled one or two!!!! Want to make sure a judge can't nail for you cheating? CLOSE YOUR HANDS INTO FISTS! Rolls are to ROLL, not be helped with the hand. If they were to touch your hands, we could call them HAND ROLLS. It disgusts me that twirlers cheat rolls!
Wow.. I watched this the first time and didn't realise that Michelle was cheating. Now I look at it again I see it soo clearly. Hollie isn't though. Thanks for posting this.. for judges to see when cheating and for athletes to learn how to do them.
Wow...my mom sent me the link for this video. I had no idea people were trying to learn rolls from the internet!
I'm amazed that people who have quit are still great at baton. Personally, I think I suck at it now, but I can still to the "drop-ins"...I called them cut-backs though!
I'm trying to learn how to do this but no matter how many times I watch it, I just can't figure out how to do it! I have googled how to do this, but theres nothing.
They are pretty darned hard, it helps if someone has their hands on their shoulder and turns you at the right time. Other than that you just kinda gotta get used to the feeling
Ive been doing baton twirling scince I was 7... I quit but I cant tell why. I was in the camaros (canada). I cant remember any of the names of things but Im still great at it. I won the provincial championships. That was my last competition before I quit. I was only in novice though...
before i ever even read these comments i was looking through and i myself being a twirler of dma for 15 years noticed that they are full hand grabs she is indeed cheating!
It annoys me so when I see them BOTH cheating, then again...as one other has already mentioned, this has been going on for a very long time. I know when I competed, around the same time as Kathy Fujimi, it would have been cause to toss you from ever competition as well as destroy your reputation. I hope these kids don't actually think that speeding them up is covering up the cheating! Pfft!
Hunter in curious...can you explan just HOW Hollie is cheating? I was coached by someone that competed against Fujimi regularly and won on occasion against her. I dont see Hollie cheating. Her coach would never let her get away with that.
I will point out the incidents by frame based on seconds of elapsed time according to this file. I encourage you to start the video and stop it at the frames I note and then examine them in more detail.
And, though suspicious, it appears that the very last frame of the video shows another full hand grab of the baton, though I admit...the frame chops off before the entire roll is completed...but, it is nonetheless suspicous. Either way, the above mentioned frames clearly show full-hand grabs of the baton during the rolls. These are not incidents of the baton brushing past open hands...you can clearly see the the hand change shape to cup the baton and re-direct the roll into the correct plane.
I am the first to admit that keeping ones hands closed during rolls keeps cheating from happening....but, it is also not very pretty. Using bladed/open hands makes the rolls look much cleaner BUT...it also sets one up to cheap if it is done during the learning phase. In the above cited frames however, these open hands are clearly changing shape to grab the baton and thus, are incidents of cheating, IMHO.
Funny thing is, I have watched tapes of her world championship routines and never saw the obvious cheating I am seeing here. *shrug* I can only comment on this piece of video and not any other routines where she may have had zero incidents of cheating. Keep in mind, this is but one piece of video.
Hunter, the instances you pointed out was a cheat. Yes, but that was MICHELLE Smith which everyone concedes that shes cheating. The last one in the orange was Hollie and that is the person I am referring to.
She grabed the baton at the end because if you call up the entire routine (see philpot9) she transitions out of that section, rather than a cheat. So again, your diddnt prove Hollie cheated, altho the end you can say may be suspicious in the footage given here. But to go as far and say Hollie cheated here is a stretch in my opinion.
I will pull up the routine when I get a chance and take a look at it. I concede that I have never seen Hollie cheat in any of her full routines in competition. In fact, I have seen her drop rather than cheat. But, either there is something fishy going on at :45 or she cheats with her left hand. I will take your word re: the transition issue. In the end, at least we are in agreement when it comes to Michelle! Thanks for the dialogue! ;-)
urgh...that IS cheating...ur supposed to let in roll around ur shoulders...that is one thing in baton that really irritates me...besides sloppy free hands hah
Wasn't sure why she kept grabbing the baton, then I looked at all the comments and saw that I wasn't alone! It's been over 20 years since I twirled but you never forget! :) Anyone else freaked out by the slow motion voice????
If at all possible while you are doing fujimis or drop ins make your hands into a fist. That resists the urge to grab them mid roll and makes it easier for the judges that you arent handling them at all.

Never ever dropping the baton is always one of two things: 1) A sign of very hard work or 2) Not trying hard enough

I learned cut-backs as fujimis...drop ins are super super hard (At least for me cause I'm lucky to be able to do one correctly without cheating)
