I just did this! If you take the bumpmap and edit it photoshop (or gimp) you can simply put text on top of the map. replace the footage in after effects and as th ebullet goes by the bullet will look engraved

Nice rendering just the back end of the bullet was to corroded no real bullet looks that corroded at the back edge of the bullet it should be semi pristine excepte the rifling grooves cut into it.

it worked perfectly fin on Sony Vegas 6..

but if your using AE, make a mask, chroma key the outer mask

and then clean up the inner part of the mask
