  • The Real God Was GARY MOORE.

  • If Clapton's artistry in this piece doesn't move you to tears then the organ and drum work sure should. Just listen to how it all melts together at 1:30 and again at 3:00. I can't stop listening to this one.

  • This version is the best I've found. Even if the guitar work doesn't bring you to your knees then the rest of the band sure should (Billy Preston and Steve Gadd are unbelievable). This is true artistry.

  • Wow!!!!!!!!!

  • buenisimo, te pasaste Eric

  • This artist is just amazing. What a feel to a blues groove that you will and could never forget. I have been playing for 30 years, and there are certain songs that always hit home with you, deep in your soul. This is definitely one of them.

  • I saw him do this at a show , i was actually driven to the brink of tears myself.

    GLADYS ELIZABETH

  • I wish I could hold you one more time to ease the pain... What a great line, God

I know the feeling. The love of my life has left me.

  • I got 3 favorite Clapton songs. this one, we're all the way and cryin'

  • Um dos poucos grandes artistas ainda na ativa. Já que hoje estamos na época das celebridades; que nada fazem de artístico e são tratados como deuses.

Como diria meu amigo charlie Brawn - o dono de snoop: "Que puxa!!!"

  • Ive enjoyed a few takes of this wonderful song on youtube but to me this is THE definitive version.....just one night....when it all comes together.

  • EC is the KING. I love listen to his music. His guitar playing is just devine. His guitar cries, laughs, speaks, all our emotions are in his playing.

  • I was there!!!! It was fantastic !!

    Elvio from Argentina

  • Even the rocks in the ground are crying when Eric plays this one! And lets not forget steve Gadd and nathan East who play ww/ every ounce of their being, night in, night out!

  • j'en pleure des rivières de larmes...seul un slow langoureux pourrait me consoler...

  • @ MrMusicM67 : I'd like to see you playing better, in front of thousand of people, on a big stage like that.

  • he messed up in the beginning with the words :(

  • Very emotional playing, superb!

  • Mind-blowing performance !!!

  • how bout old love from 24 nights?

  • I listen to all kind of music and songs, and i always come back to this song, specially this..

  • CLAPTON

  • Great song He"s still GOD

  • The emotion he plays this song with is very moving. It takes me back in a second to a time of my life that will always hurt, but I survived it. Thanks Eric, I love ya, you're the best!

  • This song is so awesome but sometimes it makes me cry thinking about my mom. But mom you taught me to love music and as long as I have music in my heart, you'll be there too.

    Trey

  • It's bittersweet, reminds us of a sad, sad time but that we survived it, Clapton captures that feeling with the way he plays; his guitar weeps; I've never seen anyone like him.

  • @BlondeTrey Hey Trey, good for you. Keep the spirit up.

  • soo beautifull

  • This is the touring band of his that I like best.

  • Easily the best version of this song!!! Eric was really on his game that night.

  • Steve Gadd on drums, extraordinary range of expression like no one else one of my favorite drummer.

  • 7.45-7.52 God speaking here...

  • @SergiySvy no god would have such a beautiful voice

  • Only Clapton can let a guitar weep like this!

  • i listen to alot of music but i always come back to hear clapton

  • @Bluessontlavie alot .......... of music. and always go back to clapton. ., so awsome

  • @Bluessontlavie i feel you.

  • @Bluessontlavie that's because you have a fine taste for excellent music my friend

  • good stuff

  • GREAT!!

  • killer! Just killer!

  • I was at that concert... It was a special night for sure.... Can you post Modern Girl??

  • Yes he is.

  • saddest song i've ever connected with

  • Clapton for ever...

  • what an atmosphere!!

  • People say Clapton is not a great technical player...but his solos are like epic movies. It slowly builds up and than at 7:57 he just crushes it right where it needed to be crushed. You can't teach that in a class or read it off of sheet music.

  • @specialagentslowhand Right! If you limit "technique" just to play fast and as many notes in a bar as possible, then Clapton is not a great technical player. But what is a bending style or a vibrato, that everybody recognizes at once? The "perfect" tone? That is a kind of technique too, and then, a lot of so-called technical players don't have too much technique at all...

  • God bless Eric! It's an incredible man. This song is great! I love the lyrics! I Love you Eric! Thank you Jésus for Eric!

  • OMG I love this man.....

Seeing him live is on my bucket list for sure!!

  • "I wish I could hold you, one more time, to ease the pain..."

    I LOVE YOU, Eric.

  • Anyone know what CD this is on?

  • Pilgrim

  • That was the studio version - on what CD is this live version?

  • One More Car One More Rider

  • Incredible..... You can just feel that solo can't you

  • Oh man, if you don't feel this one, your heart is flat made of stone y'all.

  • Absolutely beautiful song, thank you for sharing it....

  • I had listened to this song, from "Clapton's Chronicles" many times....but REALLY heard the words 3 days after my dad died. For the rest of that ride home that night...I too, felt like I was "drowning in a river of tears". Thanks for this beautiful song.

  • PERFECT

  • 7:47, that guitar is WEEPING

  • too long didn't get there

  • Today I happened to listen to Mr.Clapton's River of Tears... It wasn't the first time I had listened to this touching song, but life is sometimes surprising...life is truth.... you change and things change...your friends disappear and you experience sadness and loneliness - I found myself crying in the car near the Lake of Garda.... Eric is a pure soul, he can convey in his songs and in his solos a kind of universal and bright truth. Thanks for all your comments and for posting.

  • Ultimate Clapton. Doesn't get any better than this.

A true genius that shaped music for decades. He's not a musician, not a performer, he can only be described as an artist. Talent like his doesn't come often, we were so lucky to have it in our generation.

    His music will live forever.

  • Just got to agree wholeheartedly. Thanks oldsufrfbum!

  • @oldsurfbum -- indeed yes! Clapton is not a rock star, he is THE most real/authentic/genuine ARTIST..like picasso...Friends, check out he and JJ Cale doing 'Danger", I got myself immersed myself in beautiful guitaring..well this is just one pearl in his string of songs...wondering which is the best forum for Clapton fans.

  • increible!!! estuve ese dia en ese lugar!!!que recuerdos!!! buenisimo!!!!

  • now, that's what i call Emotions and Talent

    God bless you, Eric

  • Brilliant piece this - I haven't seen this number played live from the 2001 concert tour but have the 'rehearsal'TV programme for the tour.

    Thanks for posting

  • Es DIOS, es DIOS, nada mas que decir, que vuelva a la Argentina porfavor para que pueda verlo una ves nada mas, yo era muy chico en el 2001, recien ahora tengo 18 lpm!

  • well said camdemonium... my exact reaction hahah...

    brilliant.

  • I agree with sentinelbrit in all respects. I have never felt such heart and soul put into a song. I'm sure everyone has felt rejection from someone we think we love at some point in our life.

  • This song has it all. Powerful lyrics which Clapton sings with amazing feeling, great haunting melody, amazing guitar work throughout, and the band is brilliant. Just a fantastic song that really moves me. I saw him in Boston a few years ago with Robert Cray. He was brilliant - on top of his game.

  • Very nice music my friend!

  • That solo was very sick... I was walking around my house listening to the song thinking typical clapton and then he starts ripping at it was like what the fuck is going on over there. Had to come sit down and watch. Hats off to clapton. He just might be a god.

  • yes, u're right, if u watch closely u might see that solo is FELT, every note has a different feeling, that's what clapton has, FEELING, i was thinking the same, "wtf is going on there!"

  • That solo. . . Wow.

  • esta canción me gusta porque en esta canción nos demuestra cuanto le afecto la perdida de si hijo Connor

  • tears...

  • speechles.... so many talent, so many... wow..

  • this song hurts real bad

  • I so love this song. It will always be one of my favorites. I listen to it all the time.

  • Afortunadamente estuve ahí con mi amigo el zurdo, IMPRESIONATE!!!!!!!

  • This is one of my favorite Eric songs.

  • Probably my all time favorite Clapton song.

  • THIS IS FOR YOU DAD................

  • one of the best songs ever made

  • Absolutely perfect...amazing live version...and Steve Gadd rules!

  • One of the prettiest and most meloncholy guitar licks I've ever heard. Amazing.

  • i started to cry....its the first time i hear this song

  • i got shivers but no tears, glad to hear someone actually enjoys this as much as me

  • great song....I listened to this and My Father's Eyes constantly the week my father died....the words ("feel like I'm drowning in a river of tears") described me that week for sure....but Clapton's music made me smile

  • Love this track by Eric. It is a favourite alongside -

Sure Got Cold After The Rain Fell - Buddy Whittington

Both songs are full of emotion
