Thing is once Honda made the CR500, they never really made any effort to extract more power from them, enough is enough they seemed to think, about the only engine change from 1990 to 2001 was a trans gear ratio swap. I wonder where they would have ended up if during the 16 years they made them Honda would have tried to find more power year after year and just piled on the power. Here we are a few decades later and the legendary engine still pulls like a boss
It's not how fast a bike is, it's how long can you keep the gas on before the corner. Two strokes make much more $en$e for racing, but I love the sound of the 4strokes.
and one more thing, if the two stroke had hook up like the four, the whole race from start to finish would look like the last half of the race..500 way out in front
here is a great example of what a 500 two stroke does to the 450's. Same as racing against a 250 two stroke. The real questions is how much wheel spin off the start does the 500 suffer before grabbing?

@honda064 i will come summer. and my valves are checked every 3 years not bad and the bike has more than a a 478 kit. it has big gun full system power flow twin air filter hot cams gytr ported head boyesen water pump hinson clutch high comp piston and gytr forks and shock theres enough money in the bike to make you cry its been rebuilt twice since it was new in 07 one because some dumb ass didnt put oil in it after they rebuilt it the first time second time was free

Wouldn't you have to have about a 1000cc 4 stroke to equal the power of the 500? This is what happened in Moto GP after the 500cc bikes were no more. Just saying you can't really compare the CR 500 to the CRF 450. The 250 2 stroke is a better comparison to the 450 and we all could see that the 450 pulls away from the 250. 500 is in a class of it's own when it comes to dirtbikes.
@leanlifter1 exactly... also a 500 2 stoke revs much higher so the top speed would be higher even at same gear ratio. 450 is just quicker out of the hole then the 500 gets wound up and its gone.

My 97 yz250 was the fastest dirt bike I have ever rode but that dosent mean its the best. I beat every 450 and 500 I ever raced but due to all the work I had done to the bike it had to run on race fuel (which cost an arm and a leg) and the power delivery was so wild the bike was not fun to ride at all and sat in the garage all the time. I have owned two and four strokes and both have good and bad qualities and it just depends on what you like. If I could only have one bike I would have a 450
@honda064, The point i was making was, the smaller engined less powerful and heavier CRF would have put up a better fight if it was geared up and riders been changed. If you listen to engine note the guy with the camera was not getting the best from his bike and making the 500's look even quicker.

@forcefed83 Are you mentally deficient? Are you seriously comparing the weight of an ancient machine with a heavy as steel frame against a brand new piece of technology with an aluminium frame? That 450 has 1000's of hours and millions of dollars of R&D work put into it!! Chuck that 500 engine into a new aluminium frame and see which one's lighter, I guarantee you the 500 will be way lighter. Four stroke engines are pathetic, way less power and way more weight than a 2 stroke of the same cc.

But you also said that there are millions of dollars put into the R&D of the 450....well there are many more millions of dollars put into the 500 compared to the history of the 500...they simply made them longer than they have been making the 450...The 500cc is a legend friend..the 450 is not. ride 1 and u will know why!

My 97 yz250 was the fastest dirt bike I have ever rode but that dosent mean its the best. I beat every 450 and 500 I ever raced but due to all the work I had done to the bike it had to run on race fuel (which cost an arm and a leg) and the power delivery was so wild the bike was not fun to ride at all and sat in the garage all the time. I have owned two and four strokes and both have good and bad qualities and it just depends on what you like. If I could only have one bike I would have a 450

@honda064, The point i was making was, the smaller engined less powerful and heavier CRF would have put up a better fight if it was geared up and riders been changed. If you listen to engine note the guy with the camera was not getting the best from his bike and making the 500's look even quicker.
