Mandarin, like Cantonese and other so-called dialects, is just one language. It's dominant because of the number of speakers and how it was set up thousands of years ago. All the "dialects" once were considered different languages. Just look at Vietnamese, it used to be written w/ Chinese Characters, but that doesnt make it Chinese.

At this point I'd say you're at 80% -- accent is spot on sometimes, near flawless most of the time, slightly off at other times, and occasionally way off. That's if we're being critical. In perspective though, you're actually speaking pretty darn good Chinese for someone picking it up as a second language. Immersion and watching Chinese drama serials will probably get you the rest of the way intonation wise. I'm a native speaker but my skills are nearly atrophied through disuse. ;-(

But when a chinese speak english... its not a big deal...

Most Malaysian chinese speak 3 languages [Chinese, English and Malay] and 2 dielects [Cantonese/Hakka/Hokkien/Teoch­ew etc.] on average.... but its still not as shocking as a white american that speaks english + mandarin
