Is that map in the beginning showing how this VW drove from West Germany into East Germany? Was that really as easy to do then? Because this commercial looks like it's from the early 1960s.
@hebneh the route he shows goes from the Ruhr area to West Berlin. There were a few transit corridors through the GDR (without off-ramps) that you could pass without needing a visa. Futhermore, it was relatively easy for westerners to travel throughout the GDR for visiting friends or making holiday (the GDR was happy to impose hefty fees though), but vice versa was very hard, almost impossible.
My Dad bought this exact Beetle in the same color new in '60. No gas guage, you knew when to get gas when you ran out of gas and had to open the hood to manually switch the fuel supply to the second reserve tank. I drove it in 1980 for 6 months. The only rust was on those black side running boards (rotted right through) and the rear bumper was completely loose since it's bracket rotted off(still hung on for dear life by the bracket left going through the rear body holes for the bumper frame).
My old man has a drawer of engine assembly tools from a German VW factory. They were used to assemble god knows how many engines. I get a strange feeling of calm using them.
The elder one was a '66 model without any chrome, untouched interior, diagonal tyres and the much loved 3 spoke steering wheel. I loved it and still love them.
Who isn't - besides James May - honestly? I just wish the films were better though. Not so Disney, more realistic. Anyway, I think the '62-'67 Bugs look the best era of Bugs.
Well if you look in a Volkswagen dealer, those have good quality but, for example, if you buy a bumper for a beetle in other places, in a moth will be rusted. It's hard to know which ones are good or bad.
I miss that german quality. Unfortunately, if you want spare parts for your VW you have to use brazilian, taiwaneese or even mexican low quality parts. That´s because the VW plant in Puebla has decided to worry about the new models and make the VW beetle a huge problem to it's owners. Even for the last edition beetles, there are no door panels, no sits and no original spare parts in general. That's exactly my case :(
please read my coment again. I´m talking about body parts in general but even the transmition is brazilian and it lasts a few years before it gives you some serios trouble. Of course I've used Bosch and Hella, those are great.
jesus!!! please read my comment. I´m just saying that original spare parts for the vw beetle are hard to find these days! I actually have a 2002 mexican beetle!
Great old commercial-from a great automotive tradition-Here, , VW has a Vw technican with the VW logo represented proudly on his shoulders, and once again, the "poor excuse" of a car company -GENERAL MOTORS- swipes it and calls it MR. GOODWRENCH.! (figures)
i swear i saw the little vw guy somewhere on there, you know, his head is the vw trademark.maybe it was another one of your posts.anyhow, went to the vw show last weekend in dade city,fl.many, many high quality cars there! i have a 66 beetle myself.keep up the good work beetlejuice150.
i am also german and the end is really a bit freaky, strange times! they wanna burn you this sentence in your head "Auf das VW kommts an", that you will buy only original VW parts.
German is such a cool language.

djeraser 2 years ago
Exactly!. I think it´s better buying original used parts and restore them.......or buy another car to keep the bug for collection or something.
