I do very much agree with you in respect to Karelians being perfect dogs for locations suceptable with bear problems. As with all dogs, they may have a history of or be more prone to be highly aggressive. But you have to remember it's has so much to do with their training and socialization . I have a Karelian and a Karelian X Husky and they both are friendly dogs. The Karelian X may be more so than the pure bred but that is only because she has the benefit of the husky temperment.

I used to have a german shepherd mix named chulo.He was my lovely family pet and in that time i used to have a rottweiler named Sabrina.She was a female gorgous and muscelar.When she fell asleep Chulo used to guard her by going in circles and sleeping next to her and snuggleing with her to keep her safe.Until one day they stold her.And we never heard Rocky's Bark since that day. :'[

So like i said before, weather it be myself, you or somebody else... if we are put in a position to be attacked it is due to our own ignorance, not the animals. If i lost my life that day i wouldnt want anyone to feel sorry for me, I was a threat to her cubs, and she eliminated the threat.... its what they do. Wrong! The Karelian is very aggressive. They feed off an animal fighting back. If it wants to fight back, the Karelian becomes more viscious and more determined. It is also very smart, and it will not rush a bear head on and try to kill it, it knows it cant. Instead it will do circles around it, harrassing it to death by barking and biting it on the back legs. The bear isn't fast enough to keep up with the Karelian. There is no better suited breed that I know of for this task.

Karelian bear dog has been used for centuries for bear hunting in Finland, they are tough dogs, reminds me of rhodesian ridgebags.

Man, maybe one dog wont work but I have a deep respect for bear dogs. Theyre the barrier between you and the beast. I wouldnt say: Oh dogs wont work. Id just be thankful I had a dog with me. don't underastimate dogs.Maybe one dog wount work but 4-5 dogs is enough to scare a bear away.Dogs have guarded us for centuries there are special breeds that are used in Africa to scare away cheetahs and guard flocks, there are breeds that are used to hunt wolfs like afgan hounds.Rhodesian Ridge-backs were used to hunt lions.Anyway you don't have to kill the bear just scare it away some dogs are just made for this job.

Not necessarily. A bear can kill a dog no problem, and most breeds of dogs who try to take on a bear would lose. The reason the Karelian is good for getting rid of bear, is because: 1. they're smart, 2. they're slick 3. they're fearless 4. they're too fast for the bear 5. They like to harrass the crap out of animals or prey that present challenges or want to fight back.

These dogs won't let the bear touch them..

I own one, so I know. Karelians are perfect for places with bear problems.

Well, I don't know what you're thinking she's implying when she says they become like AK-47's, but I own a Karelian, and can say she is most definitely, without a doubt, fearless. And any dog who threatens her gets harrassed to death and bit on the back legs if the dog is too huge for her to attack. She is also too quick with reflexes and running for them to catch her. If a dog she deems she can handle threatens her first, she does attack. I've had to pull her off several times.

America has it's own version of a Bear Dog otherwise known as a "Mountain Kurr". It was primarily used by the Pioneers to protect them from bears. And like these, they aren't at all afraid of a bear and will even attack one. They were largely forgotten as a breed, but have been making big come back as they make great hunting dogs.

Yep, I hunt with Busher and Kemmer Curs. They are close to Plotts. If you've seen what they do in the woods; you got no questions about bear dogs. It's their nature. And, by the way, they sleep in the house and are as human friendly as a beagle.
