Thank you for the info, I have the stereo machines however, the valve stereo was called the BTR-3/2 and the BBC modded BTR-2 was called the RD4/4 (I have one of these too) however I didn't know they called it the BTR-2-GT, what did the GT stand for?
These videos are cool but I really wish you would pipe in some hi-fi sound from those decks directly into the video so we could hear somewhat how they sound. I know the codecs used here are a poor translator but it'd still be cool.
this looks more that a reel machine from the 40's. i also had some russian valve reel to reels from the 50's and they looked a lot modern than this. anyway , it is worth watching it!
EMI produced the first British tape recorders in 1847, this was the EMI BTR-1 and was an adaptation of the Tonschreiber, this machine started out life in the early 50's. I also have a Tonschreiber from 1939 which I will be putting on soon.
I have been collecting for 15 years, you build up a lot of contacts over that time and one of them comes from the BBC, usually the way to acquire these recorders is with a lot of cash.
cool

The BTR2-GT wasn't the official number, it's what they were affectionately known as by the technical staff at the time. "GT" as in motor racing.

When I worked in the Beeb back in the 70's we still had some BTR2's very much in use. The stereo ones were known as "BTR-2-GT"
