  • The BTR2-GT wasn't the official number, it's what they were affectionately known as by the technical staff at the time. "GT" as in motor racing.

  • When I worked in the Beeb back in the 70's we still had some BTR2's very much in use. The stereo ones were known as "BTR-2-GT"

  • Thank you for the info, I have the stereo machines however, the valve stereo was called the BTR-3/2 and the BBC modded BTR-2 was called the RD4/4 (I have one of these too) however I didn't know they called it the BTR-2-GT, what did the GT stand for?

  • do you still have this unit?

  • I still have these units and many more, the EMI machines are one of my favorites

  • you were right seblington, this is absolutely massive!

  • I hope to get the valve stereo one of these one day.

  • Hi Seblington,I have a EMI portable tape recorder, TR 501 (or very similar)...some information about this model? Thanks!!!

    Horace

  • Hello, not heard of the TR-501, do you mean TR-50 or TR-51? can you send me a pitcure if I send you my email via PM?

  • Awesome, now that's a piece of history.

  • wow man. What a beast.

lol... your dog wanted to remind you who you love the most..

  • Lol, that dog of mine :-) he is very friendly.

  • Those decks are TOO COOL!!! I'd like to hear how they sound. Those are so cool! That big chunck sound of it operating I like, too!

  • Cheers, this is one of my favorites.

  • These videos are cool but I really wish you would pipe in some hi-fi sound from those decks directly into the video so we could hear somewhat how they sound. I know the codecs used here are a poor translator but it'd still be cool.

  • The machine has stopped working properly though I did make a video some months ago which I have uploaded. Cheers!

  • this looks more that a reel machine from the 40's. i also had some russian valve reel to reels from the 50's and they looked a lot modern than this. anyway , it is worth watching it!

  • EMI produced the first British tape recorders in 1847, this was the EMI BTR-1 and was an adaptation of the Tonschreiber, this machine started out life in the early 50's. I also have a Tonschreiber from 1939 which I will be putting on soon.

  • Sorry typo, 1947 not 1847

  • how were you able to acquire these machines? lol

  • I have been collecting for 15 years, you build up a lot of contacts over that time and one of them comes from the BBC, usually the way to acquire these recorders is with a lot of cash.
