That third guitar player is every bit as good as Dweezil. I prefer either of them to Vai. I respect his talent but his style and tone do very little for me. No I did no say either of them are "better" than Steve.
@brickoakapolarbear By George! You've got it. One day he will write a song. Oh no he won't. Vai leaves no space between the notes, which is where the meaning and emotion often is. The notes just get you there per se. I knew of folks that saw Vai live. Soon became unbearable and like an endless technical instructional lesson. Steve apparently has nothing of interest to say and then expresses this with technical brilliance in an imagination free sexless wasteland. I prefer Ian Moss.
Vai, no doubt, has better technique and speed. He also mixes things up a bit more with tapping, sweeping, trem use, and speed picking. I like Zappa's playing style fairly well too, but it's a lot less innovative (IMO) and some of his faster riffs were really unclean
@wilmaman Okay I'll admit my first comment was a little harsh, I listened to the video again and some parts are definitely very melodic. However, I still believe some parts are more just "noise" rather than music (especially some of the tapping parts) but overall it's not too bad
awesome! saw zappa plays zappa york barbican uk. awesome.quality music played by quality musicians. and a snip of the price compared to what the stone roses are charging...to play in a field... in the uk. how does dweezil do this?
I can't get enough of Steve Vai, but I grew up with Frank. Not only is brilliant an understatement, but Steve is his employee. He can be fired anytime. Not that I would want that to happen, but it is kind of ironic. Look at the video where Steve is discussing his audition for Frank.....I hear Linda Ronstadt is looking for a guitarist....
I witnessed this 1st hand at Vicar St in Dublin. Dweezil has his fathers coolness and confidence combined with modern tapping and sweeping chops. Vai his usual faultless brilliance and hats off to the other guitarist who held his own up against those legends. Scheila is a masterclass in 'outside' soloing' One of the best gigs I was ever at..
I don't like the expression "VS" in the title. I think it should be called Steve Vai & Dweezil Zappa. They're both fantastic players in their own way who slouldn't "compete" against each other. Comparison however is fine, but VS seems to me like a wrestling battle or something, and that's not what music is about, I think
Love Vai, but he did all his tricks without doing anything of true substance. Zappa plays some really cool stuff. Love his feel on 1:13 and the riff for 0:43 is just awesome. No doubt Vai is a God on his axe, but it doesn't show on this vid. Zappa kicks his ass
Did anyone else notice that up until 4:48, Vai was playing "FLO", and then all of a sudden, without any change or stop, he is playing the mirrored "Bad Horsie" JEM with the LED position markers? I didn't see him make a change anywhere and I can her his guitar the whole time...magic I suppose

You mean acoustic? electric? Spanish? Classical? Rock? Heavy metal?
C'mon guys, it's subjective.
Just dig it for what it is - 2 very good guitarists enjoying what they do and giving pleasure to those who came to see them in concert.
PS: the comment about the guy on the Les Paul? He was actually playing like Zappa himself if you were listening. No, I mean actually LISTENING!
