@brickoakapolarbear By George! You've got it. One day he will write a song. Oh no he won't. Vai leaves no space between the notes, which is where the meaning and emotion often is. The notes just get you there per se. I knew of folks that saw Vai live. Soon became unbearable and like an endless technical instructional lesson. Steve apparently has nothing of interest to say and then expresses this with technical brilliance in an imagination free sexless wasteland. I prefer Ian Moss.

Vai, no doubt, has better technique and speed. He also mixes things up a bit more with tapping, sweeping, trem use, and speed picking. I like Zappa's playing style fairly well too, but it's a lot less innovative (IMO) and some of his faster riffs were really unclean

I witnessed this 1st hand at Vicar St in Dublin. Dweezil has his fathers coolness and confidence combined with modern tapping and sweeping chops. Vai his usual faultless brilliance and hats off to the other guitarist who held his own up against those legends. Scheila is a masterclass in 'outside' soloing' One of the best gigs I was ever at..
