i used to play this game aaaaalll the time on the famicom.

the game was actually part of a "600 in 1" cartridge with mario, circus, dig dug, bomberman etc on it, and it had several versions of each.

1 version of contra on it, called "assut contra" started you with the 30 lives AND highest powerup, no cheats necessary.

still, i played ti so much, i aced it no sweat . probably took me as long as you to finish it, though i never timed it. haven't played in a while, but the console still works :)

I love this game. Contra 4 should have learned more from this game, the original Contra was PLAYABLE and FUN. Contra 4 while pretty cool, with some awesome features, is so hard it pisses me off, i know i just got done playing it, i had to shut my ds off or risk bouncing it off the floor. Insanely hard doesnt equal fun.

I can agree with you there, the original just had that perfect blend of being challenging but you could still have a great time. They kinda make Contra 4 much more difficult but still I enjoy it despite is challenging difficulty.
