Because of the actor and musician that I am, I always create a scene in my mind for each song I hear. As I created a scene for this piece, I was moved by the way that he sang all the gentle words of this song. Props to you, Mr. Elling.
@superman97303 And in the tender, fragile moments at the end, the piano accompaniment is perfect. Quiet, tender, yet tense, as the singer in agony over distant love. Oddly, it reminds me of a scene from the movie "Awakenings" where Penelope Ann Miller is leaving the mental hospital for the last time. Robert DeNiro is watching her leave, and he's sobbing uncontrollably. She was one of the few lights in his world, and he knows that she'll never return again. Props to Lawrence Hobgood!
Not being a Jazz enthusiast, I went begrudgingly with my wife a few years ago to see Kurt perform at Gustavus Adolphus college in MN, my wife's alma mater.
I wasn't a fan of the scatting... originally...
We've gone back to see him again since then and I now believe that he's one of, if not the best vocalist I've heard, especially in person. The talent displayed by him and his crew was phenomenal. This is my favorite of his songs.
@markarness to see him live...is like stepping into a room in heaven.........i just seen him live at the dakota jazz club,mpls,mn.....standing...Bravo!...a Master. must ppick up the Gate.WOW!
I saw him sing this in a small room once, right after he talked about how hard it was to go on tour and be without your family. The emotional connection when he sang this was beautiful and made me weep. Still can't listen to this song without tearing up- so gorgeous and genuine.
Beautiful interpretation of this song.......I would have never heard of you...if Sara Gazarek hadn't just posted this beautiful music video on her FB website :-)
This song is my favorite song right now. Talk about emotion! And listen to the way he caresses every part of every word. Not even the consonants on the ends of words are allowed to pass without being imbued with meaning. I would give anything to study under this guy.
this song is beautiful
