Many 356/912 (and 914-4 owners with carburetors) owners have replaced their original distributor with the Bosch 009 performance distributor only to find that the engine lost power. The 009 has a short advance curve and, if timed statically, will be 10 degrees short of full advance -- the cause of the power loss. Full advance of 34-36 degrees (and additional power) can be achieved by timing the distributor with a proper timing light.
a 022 has 15* advance at 1500 rpm and a total of 30* at 2800rpm
a 019 has 8.5 degrees of advance at 1800 rpm and 17 degrees at 3500 rpm
the 009 is crap

and if you do it that way, your timing will be further advanced at idle. not as bad of a thing, but still wrong for that engine and its aplication.
