Nope, they were trying to prevent the collapse of the communist empire. Notice how throughout history the Russians have never declared war, they only acted to "defend" themselfs and "save" minorities. Tony, a little more history here is needed: 1) Russia (not the Soviet Union) conquered Azerbaijan in 1813. It belonged to Russia. 2) The Russians moved into Azerbaijan in 1991 because they were COMMITTING GENOCIDE AGAINST CHRISTIAN ARMENIANS. After the Soviets left, the Armenians were completely vulnerable and the Azerbaijanis attacked AGAIN, but this time Armenia itself moved in to save them, and to this day controls Nagorno Karabakh. The Azerbaijanis are still Mohammedans. Don't trust them.

Tony, as someone who has many friends who grew up in the Soviet union, and who by that association has learned a lot about it, I can tell you that the people who were responsible for the soviet collapse were the soviets themselves.

They had a pseudo-scientist in charge of their agriculture who told them they could have three harvests a year. They had a huge problem with misappropriation of resources and many non-Russians got a raw deal and they knew it.

It was an internal collapse, not pressure.
