Back then during the Islamic era, and during the time of Muhammad (saw), rules about everything in life weren't given in a day, so yes Muslims did own slaves before Allah revealed verses about slaves. These verses that talk about slaves were all placed to eventually end slavery, because slavery couldn't be ended all in one night or it'll make a big impact in society, so Allah set simple rules which ended slavery forever.

MLK was a devout christian. He said in his autobiography that he drew his strength from Christ, he always felt better when he prayed to Christ. He was a Baptist minister. Back then during the Islamic era, and during the time of Muhammad (saw), rules about everything in life weren't given in a day, so yes Muslims did own slaves before Allah revealed verses about slaves. These verses that talk about slaves were all placed to eventually end slavery, because slavery couldn't be ended all in one night or it'll make a big impact in society, so Allah set simple rules which ended slavery forever.
