According to the NY Times in 2006, Cuba was offering contracts to foreign firms (some from India as well as China) to drill off Cuban shores, but there's no evidence of current drilling.
Oh ya, another politician spouting,"something I heard" as fact. I have to say, Idiot limbaugh made up a good phrase, "drive by media". It applies to all of the politicians too. All a mouth has to do is spout something and it becomes OUR job to decide if we accept it or not, true or not, if it fits what we agree with or not. It seems to be better if it is "misinformation".
WASHINGTON (AP) — Vice President Dick Cheney's office acknowledged on Thursday that he was mistaken when he asserted that China, at Cuba's behest, is drilling for oil in waters 60 miles from the Florida coast.
Perhaps if America was as friendly with communist Cuba as we are with communist China, we would have these Cuban oil leases instead of China. But since American lawmakers have an irrational non-engagement policy with our neighbor, we are screwing ourselves.
Not sure what several people are alluding to slamming this story. China IS developing offshore oil platforms in Cuban waters. That isn't propaganda; it's truth. They're doing it off of Venezuela also.
"The claim -- touted by House Republicans and carried on conservative talk radio -- was repudiated by Republican Senator Mel Martinez, an independent congressional report, industry experts and other observers, who said there is zero evidence for it."
"Any talk of using some fabricated Cuba-China connection as an argument to change U.S. policy has no merit." He also said, "Reports to the contrary are simply false. They are akin to urban legends." [Miami Herald, 6/12/08]
