To Mustang man, I appreciate that you bring up overpopulation of wild horses on range land because as they are fenced into less and less land, of course there will not be enough resources to go around.  Whenever we fence an animal in - we have to take responsibility to see that it gets enough resources. The BLM is a land management agency, not a wild - life or horse management agency. Not all horses will be able to remain on all ranges - but land should be restored and non-biased studies.

The BLM. Another worthless government agency who obviously caters to cattle ranching on public lands. Maybe that's why the natural ranges in much of the west are so overgrazed and barren. And I believe they secretly withold water from wild horses by restricting access to natural springs and streams that are found throughout the west, trying to make it even more difficult for the horses to survive.

Also, I just finished reading a GREAT book, a novel on the subject of horse slaughter during the 1930s (fiction). The title is 'The Last Good Horse' by David Martin Anderson. The wild horses haven't done anything wrong. They use some water and graze that is wanted by other special interest groups. The cattle industry has a strong hold on the BLM and even though they pay minimally for the impact of their cattle, The BLM profits from that industry so they don't protect the horses as they are lawfully required to do. Why do they have to chase the mustangs miles and miles just to go into the trap? why removing them off the land? If the mustangs in the wild are skinny catch them and release them where there is food and water?! I just dont get it they have done nothing wrong!

Please keep brain-storming about how you and people who you are connected to can help the horses. I've discovered a prevailing bias of disdain for the wild horses, among many people, not just the BLM, so those of us who understand their lives in the wild, need to continue to educate others about the low impact the wild horse actually has on range land. That said, because they are fenced in, they will over-populate areas if they are not managed. Private -public partnership is a good start.

This makes me sick, I decided to visit a pen where the horses were kept just a few miles from town (reno) and they keep hundreds of horses in the harsh sunlight cramped together. They were the last symbol of the wild west, and now they live to either be adopted or turned into glue. I HATE the BLM for this, I hope a horse kicks every last one of them in the face

Buying land in Nevada or anywhere that borders BLM land could be one solution to helps save wild horses. Maeline Pickens has a strong commitment to this cause but is faced with lots of resistance from the ranchers as well as the BLM. What we have is a Shindler's list for horses that have been rounded-up. Return to Freedom is also among groups trying to save as many as they can. We all need to help one another, like the wild horses help each other. That's key to survival for all.

There is no reason to round up the horses, they are not in any danger of starvation or lack of water. In all vids and pics they are fat and healthy.

The BLM is removing them to pander to special interests. We, the People pay hundreds of millions of dollars a year to subsidize cattle grazing on public lands yet is it less than 3% of our beef supply. Big corporations hold most of the leases. NOT family ranchers. They pay far less than market value. It is time to end welfare ranching.

its harsh that the animals are destroyed but the BLM normally weed out the very old and the sick.. and by doing that they reduce the pop down to a good amount keep the recources and the herd becomes stronger so its a good thing actually

@TheEDBShow The comment I posted in response: The BLM removes horses based on a "non-selective" gate cut. Removal is random and has nothing to do with weeding out the old and sick. Nature will take care of those horses. The BLM has 40,000 horses warehoused without a clue what to do with them. The horses have been fenced into smaller acres so more corporate cattle can over-graze the land. Sustainable solutions have been proposed but the BLM is uncooperative to date.

I'm not sure the sheriff ( local municipality can override a federal order. I believe that theory has been proven in court. Federal rule has jurisdiction over local authority --- but I'm not a lawyer so I'm just expounding on what I've heard.

First of all, FUCK the BLM. I worked and volunteer at a wild horse sanctuary for the past 5 years and we work to keep the wild horses FREE. The BLM does nothing but break up the herds and adopt them out. In the 1800's, there were more than 2 million wild horses. Today, there are less than 30,000. And 13,000 more are supposed to be rounded up this year? The American Wild Horse is a part of America's history. They were here WAY longer than we ever where. THIS NEEDS TO BE STOPPED. BLM, GO TO HELL.

@Sockitloud Thank you for your wonderful comment. Responsibility at the helm and not forever passing the buck or blaming others. As long as the world's people demands lots of beef and oil and gas, the horses will be in jeopardy. Land and resources are in peril along with their inhabitants. The wild horses have demonstrated an uncanny ability to adapt to their environment over eons but without enough habitat eventually all will be lost. The BLM needs to restore land to the mustangs.

Using a helicopter is a lazy inhumane method of rounding up animals. Try that with rounding up illegals and see what kind of law suite you'd get into. BLM claiming to have no power and just be doing thier jobs is about as compelling argument as any hit-man using that exscuse for killing people. Doesn't fly. If they can't be productive members of our country with real jobs, instead of stealing natural resources from us while on federal payroll, they should be zero'd out, not our horses.

Few BLM employees make any decisions. They follow orders to keep their jobs. The decisions that have been made involve laws to protect or get rid of wild horses on public lands. Our citizens are behind driving these laws - not only because we consume the bi-products from public lands ( like eating beef, that might be raised by a corporation using public land to graze their cattle) but all kinds of demand for natural resources and recreational use falls into public land management.

Why is that helicopter pilot running the horses around in circles?

The contractor claims less than .003% deaths - do the math - 48 dead horses out of 1900 - well over 4.000%!

Just more lies on top of BLM - Bureau of Lies and Mismanagement!

Write or call Obama and Congress - EVERY DAY! Demand, politely, that there be a moratorium and examination of BLM practices & support tithe ROAM bill currently in subcommittee.

This was horribly painful to watch -- particularly the cruel helicopter "roundup" (what happened to more humane roundup methods?!), but I'm grateful to Mara for recording it. The photography of the horses was gorgeous. I just wish someone would round up these BLM guys -- espeecially the ones who set the polices that favor cows over horses -- and put them in tiny, cramped steel pens!

Thank you for posting this. It's a terrible situation these beautiful horses are subjected to. Your talent was very well represented in this. It is sad to know and see that this organization are imprisoning these innocent victims which they are actually meant to protect and provide for. Hopefully others will realize the plight of these horses and work on getting something done.

They aren't going to slaughter at this time. They are put in holding pens and some are selected to be placed for adoption. We don't know what the outcome for so many will eventually be. The Burns Ammendment allows BLM to send them to slaughter if they deem them to be over ten years old. ( how would they know this for sure?) Ken Salazar is working on a plan for relocating them to midwest and back east. Meanwhile more are rounded up without a solution Try to help --
