Rono in all probability could have run faster also. He made the record at an ordinary duel meet, WSU vs. UW, all alone. Rono was on his way to break the record before in Eugene, but coach Chapman held him back out of pettiness against Oregon -anyway, this is the rumors I heard as a runner for UW in the eighties.
