How do you heal your allies?

I´ve just started out on PC(have beat it on xbox and I ´d never knew u could heal them)

I was in this quest in the beginning when youre going for Oakvale and youre supposed to escort them.

Anyway I stood near them,even targeted and used a health potion(1st one)and they wont heal.

You use heal life spell when the blue light is on them, in other words, when you are targeting them, but not the attack targeting, the auto-targeting.
