len beardsley, the announcer you hear passed away at 92.god bless him.len died in sept of 2010.he helped me with my career in tv back in 1975.i will miss him.a really nice human being.
@DaZINGERMAN Wow, that's neat! If you were growning up in the 1970s like me, you never missed the intro for KABC's Eyewitness News. And thanks for telling us the name of Len Beardsley, KABC's long time staff announcer. And R.I.P. as well.
@darrylhaynes I met him in October of 1996 at a Radio & TV festival in the North Hollywood area of L.A. I got his autograph and told him that in jr. high, I had to do a TV newscast for speech class, and that I did a parody of him; if I remember correctly, he was amused by it. =D
Ah, I remember all of these news anchors so well. I loved watching Eyewitness News & really enjoyed Dr. George Fishbeck's weather reports.
I have always been an avid news watcher. Those were the days of news that I really enjoyed the most...so many memories like when Jerry Dunphy & a news woman were shot out outside the studios. Being in L.A. I knew where this had happened & remember Tawny Little hardly being able to deliver the news about her co-anchor being shot at but they would be ok.
@nuts4clara, You are right, that era is no longer with us. I remember calling the station about an hour before the news started & asked to talk to Dr. George. I was taking a class at that time in aviation/flight attendant job for a small charter airline. We were covering meterology in the class & I called Dr. George to ask a weather related question. They let me to talk to him. I remember he was so polite, so nice and really took the time to answer my questions. Really miss all those anchors!
@folkmusicgirl That's really neat! =D As I said in another post on this YT video, I met Dr. George at that October 1996 radio & TV fair, and told him about my impersonating him in jr. high. He was working for KCBS(formerly KNXT-TV)as a special correspondent. =)
I remember when Dr. George's son was killed in a hunting related accident...but not sure now the details--it was long ago & I think his son was young - maybe in his 20's at the time. Is Dr. George still with KNXT-TV? I really haven't heard anything about him for many many years & didn't even know that he was with KCBS in '96. I haven't heard about his passing so hope he is still alive and doing well. Thanks!
I used to look forward to Jerry Dunphy ( RIP) & Christine Lund as well.
And the edit used here was considerably different from what WABC-TV, WLS-TV and WXYZ-TV used. For that matter, the edit KGO-TV in San Francisco used differed from WABC/WLS/WXYZ's or KABC's - but had somewhat more in common with WABC's in the way it was edited.
I miss the news actually being news... and not the BS they serve up now..

@folkmusicgirl It was also the era of big name anchors, who people would trust with the news. Too bad that era is no longer with us. =(

If no one's mentioned it already, the music for this opening is "Tar Sequence" from Lalo Schifrin's score from "Cool Hand Luke" with Paul Newman.

I think this clip in from 1979 because they've added new graphics by the winter of 1980.
