Their church gets set on fire - it's because the sinners are angry at the truth.

Nothing, but a few years back I had an e-mail exchange with Margie Phelps.

She started out her response with "Dear Jughead, jumbo tears Jason". She told me to read my Bible and OBEY!!!!!!!! She said I was a false Christian and am appointed to eternal damnation. When I asked her how she could possibly know, since she doesn't have access to the Lamb's book of life, she got really mad, and said "HOW DARE YOU TALK ABOUT MY SAVIOUR'S BOOK OF LIFE, IT DOESN't APPLY TO YOU". Then she blocked my e-mail after I asked her why they never talk about God's grace.

Ok, and the fact that these customs applied only to the Jews makes it better how? It's like saying "I only physically abuse my OWN family when I feel like it, but I'm kind to everyone else - so I'm really a good guy!" C'mon, any reasonable person who reads verses like that will see judeo-christian God for who he really is, - an unjust melevolent bully, not an all-loving all-forging Father in heaven.

If one of the WBC members died tragically, I predict they'd respond in one of two ways: first (if the person was killed at a protest) they'd claim it was martyrdom and part of God's plan of the end times, or second, they'd claim it was because that person didn't have enough faith and wasn't truly saved, an "enemy" that had snuck in to corrupt them. that's what I'm sure they'd say about any family members who have left their church, and probably any members who died suddenly of disease, etc.

That is likely what they would say. In fact, one of the Phelps daughters says as much in "The most hated family in America". However, that is an unbiblical perspective. The Book of Job tells us that even strong believers of God will experience hard times, and that those hard times are not an indication of the recipient's lack of faith.

Well said, SirTheist. To the layman, people like Shirley Phelps seem to have a better understanding of the bible because they name so many passages offhand in their diatribes.

However, a perfect memorization of Scripture means nothing if you don't have the comprehension to understand it.

I have visited their website and read their material, and it is amazing at just how shallow it is.

I'm curious what they do about serious sins committed after public conversion (for example Shirley's having a child out of wedlock).

They ascribe to some kind of calvinistic double predestination, but how do they know they're the chosen ones (I guess this is more a problem I have with that doctrine itself)? they see people committing sins and presume those people have not or will never repent, but they see themselves and presume true repentance has or will take place?

I think that the main reason they focus so much on homosexuality is that that is one sin that cannot be turned on themselves. Whenever Shirley Phelps has been asked about what her own sins were, she ignores the question. Rather than providing herself as an example as what to effect repentance can have on one's life, she refuses to acknowledge her own sins, because she only cares about judging, rather than being forgiven.

Unfortunately quite a while. There have been a few videos done on the inside so to speak, I think a British producer did a documentary on them. And the films show they have quite a large family with a pretty big number of children.

True, although many of those children have abandoned the church in the past, so it isn't a huge stretch to think that many of the current children will abandon them in the future.

Hard to say. Overall, it really depends on whether or not the younger members of the family are going to keep or abandon the cause that has been put before them after Fred and his children are gone.

So just own up the the fact that you have your own morality, and chuck the old book aside. Stop legitimizing those nuts that think they are the chosen people and hate gays and atheists. YOU make them look legit, and I'm tired of defending you against atheists who attack you for that.

I'm sure can tell me the Bible verses which point out that he is wrong, but he also can also show you the verses that say he's right (since the Bible a big book of multiple choice). I mean, if Bible commands to stone homosexuals, nonbelievers and unruly children - than that's the way it is. And while you can talk all day about loving thy neighbor and turning the other cheek - it's YOU who's picking and choosing the verses that best represent YOUR moral sense (which is great).
