the ending sequence always makes me assume im about to hear "Sleepwalk" by Santo & Johnny. the song aka "RIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIITCHIIIIIIIEEEEEEEE :''''''''''( "
Pixies- Surfer Rosa My Bloody Valentine- Loveless Radiohead- OK Computer Pink Floyd- Animals Arcade Fire- Funeral David Bowie- The Rise & Fall Of Ziggy Stardust & The Spiders From Mars Joy Division- Unknown Pleasure The Stooges- Fun House Clash- London Calling etc . . .
New York Dolls s/t debut (1973). There are, I'm sure, literally thousands of bands that were influence by this, bands that never would have even existed without the NYD. So far ahead of its time that it shaped music for at least a decade, or maybe even the last 40 years. What would punk have been without the New York Dolls? What would have the Clash been? It's punk. It's pop. But the one thing IT IS NOT is pop punk. My #1 album for ahead of its time. 40 years old and still feels new.
I feel like so much of the riot grrl movement is owed to an album like The Au Pairs' Playing with a Different Sex. I guess you could say the album was about 10 years ahead.
@CaveWang I once read that Kid A didn't so much break ground but brought less popular forms of music to a broader audience, which I know it did for me.
Nomeansno's Wrong, and Neurosis' Souls at Zero and Enemy of the Sun are ahead of their time, rest of their material gave some other bands some catchup time.
@carthiefd its not something to explain but basically i think their whole career was leading towards that one album and i think it is the PERFECTION of boards of canada and the perfection of musical power and it has plunged me through to realms never before witnessed in all of history. i think every thing about it is perfect and a lot of people dont under stand why its so amazing and i think in the future they will see it and it will get the recognizations it deserves, or NOT. i dont care
@gregorygumpas PS i dont think any one else can ever replicate what they did with that album and come even close, i think even they under stand that they have created the ultimate masterpiece of music which is why they havent released anything in so long, they want to go a step above and honestly i dont know if its possible for ANY one to do so.
@gogolplex74 thats because they were so ahead of their time people didnt know what it is so they didnt try it out and most of these bands i know already, if you dont know much about indie music this isnt going to be much fun for you :/
The Sonics - Here Are The Sonics (1965) was an album that influenced a lot of proto-punk. The track "Psycho" has some pretty intense screaming for a mid 60s song.
It's funny how people say his hair looks like JBs when he looks pretty much exactly like guys from post-punk bands from the 80s, and I'm not just saying that because he's wearing a Joy Division shirt
Meat Puppets II is a big one. They were making OK Computer guitar sounds 13 years before that album. MP II also basically predicted math rock and there would be no Nirvana or Animal Collective without it.
the beach boys: pet sounds; stevie wonder: innervisions; funkadelic: one nation under a groove; sly and the family stone: there's a riot goin' on; animal collective: sung tongs; blu: noyork! i could go on for hours and days.
@thprmr Ya, he's very rigid. It seems like he's reading off a script. He gets a bit more comfortable as the video goes along, but when sitting beside Anthony... He seems very awkward.
Glassjaw: Worship & tribute. simply summed up as Elvis Costello, fronting Bad Brains. one of the single most progressive "post-hardcore" albums of the last decade, and really, ANYTHING by the Dillinger escape plan. most specifically: Calculating Infinity. Over a decade later and the mathcore scene is STILL playing catch up to just that one album.
I fucking love Mission Of Burma. Anyone into them should definitely check out Birdsongs of the Mesozoic. Much much different, sorta chamber experimental rock, but incredible all the same.
great list, was Can's "Future Days" on it? I think that record was so far ahead of its time. I sounds contemporary, even today. Definitely recommend it.
The Shaggs "Philosophy of the World" It took at least 20 years for this to sound as cool as it does.
Swans "Children of God"
Miles Davis "Bitches Brew"
Neurosis "Enemy of the Sun"
Igor Stravinsky "The Rite of Spring" This didn't become an LP for a few decades yet this piece caused a riot during its debut, in part due to the fact that the music essentially sounded "ahead of its time". Neat!
Shout out to Delia Derbyshire and the BBC Radiophonic Workshop. Not an LP, just well ahead of their time.
Chris seems kinda nervous. It doesnt sound natural coming from him. I dont mean this in a negative way this is purely constructive criticism considering that this video will be watched by over 40,000 people i would be nervous too. Maybe he should just lighten up.
@sea58 well the kid on the left is at least twice as awkward as anthony, not funny, and he is a SUPER hipster as apposed to anthony's just being a hipster
