  • Ok... ill be honest. 1. I've never seen or heard of this until now 2. i LOVE the disney version way better x)

  • donde puedo conseguir los subtitulos en español,o en audio español.si alguien lo sabe q lo diga para bajarlo...lo nesecito este de 1982

  • my favorite version of Notre-Dame de Paris!

  • They never use the real notredame church

  • this Frollo, OMG

  • Comment removed

  • Quasi photo, Quasi dodo, Quasi toto!

  • You would thin with all them South Asian buddies living in the

UK, these A holes could've done a better job at casting

    Pissmerelda!

  • why is esmeralda white??????? wtf haha

  • @idfgirl18 Esmerelda's actually white in the book, I think. The plot twist at the end is that she was taken from a French peasant woman by the gypsies when she was a baby, and grew up with them. What more pisses me off is that in the book, Esmerelda's fifteen or so. NO WAY is that actress fifteen.

    Hey, look, it's Claudius!

  • I've been looking for this for years, i watched it once when i was eleven...thx for uploading it

  • Huge difference between this frolo and Disney's frolo!

  • Hahahaha! @5:24... oOoOoOoOoO....

  • I like the bear!

  • 1982 Sir Anthony Hopkins played Quasimodo, 1991 he played Hannibal Lecter/Lector. He's played so many great roles, he's one of my favorite actors!

  • Hehe look at Claude's face. It makes me crack up, all he can think about is Esmeralda.

  • 8:40

Hey, that´s David Suchet! The one who plays Poirot!

  • That other priest is a queer...

  • wow this is amazing.

  • @Jujichan006 Well like I said I do not want to spoil it for you but there is a wealthy girl by the name of Fleur De lys that likes Phoebus and well he is obliged to her but he is infatuated with Esmeralda. The book may be a little complicated to read since it is kind of in old english and other languages are used at times but it's worth it. It also introduces you to the character Sister Gudule who is a very important character yet they always exclude her from the movies.

  • @Jujichan006 Phoebus? He's actually in his mid twenties and he's an asshole. Read the book by Victor Hugo you will love it, I don't want to spoil it.

  • i like the guy"s hair at 6:31. its cute

  • no... they made frollo too cute in this... assuming frollo is the guy at 5:31? ive never seen this b4 sorry...

  • the guy at 6:31 looks exactly like dutch actor Antonie Kamerling (RIP!)

  • Stop with the fucking disney bullshit already ..

  • There is a big difference between this one and the Disney one.

Frollo is an Archdeacon in this one and he willingly takes Quasimodo in

In the Disney one he is a judge enforcing the law of the land and he is told by the archdeacon to take Quasimodo or be damned to Hell.

  • Love this frollo :3 Such a beautiful (though very sad) story!

Their making a remake sometime in 2011 or 2012!

I WAS really excited, who knows, maybe Alan Rickman could have played Claude Frollo! xD And a new Esmeralda, Quasimodo, and all others, it left room for much portrayal and new meaning

But then I heard its going to be an "action adventure" along the lines of "Pirates of Caribbean"

    *sigh*

Oh well, I suppose I cant wait ten years for another :/

  • @XxM00nSHADExX YYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYEEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSS YOU JUST MADE MY DAY!!! AND EVER SINCE I SAW THIS MOVIE AND DISNEYS AND READ THE OFFICIAL BOOK I WAS LIKE I WISH THEY MADE A REMAKE AND ALAN RICKMAN IS THE ONLY PERSON THAT CAN PLAY FROLLO!! AND I WISH KIM KARDASHIAN COULD ACT BECAUSE SHEE WOUD MAKE AGREAT ESMERELDA

  • @XxM00nSHADExX Actually, Victor Hugo wrote his book in a very "cinematographic" way, it could easily be such a great movie, there's everything in it: romance, battles, friendship, angst,... Hugo was a visionary :) Btw, Alan Rickman would make the best Frollo ever... except that he is insanely hot ^^

  • SHE LOOKS TO FREAKING WHITE AND OLD.

  • Even though I know what he's saying, it always sounds like, "By this document, Dark Lord Frollo, the Church invests in you..."

    Yay.

  • In the novel Quasimodo is actually 20 years old, Esmeralda is 16, Claude Frollo is in his 30s.

  • i like Frollo in this! he's nice haha

  • that kinda sucks....frollo adopts Quasi....raises him ...loves him and in the end Quasi does him in!!!!!!!!!!!

  • thats one bad hair cut

  • @xprincessx84 It would really lighten up my day to see one of those munk haircuts in the city. I would have laughed out loud.

  • I really love the way Frollo is portrayed as a kind, well meaning person-In a way, I feel slightly sorry for him. He isn't so much evil, just an obsessed, twisted man with far to much power and lust.

  • @ShatteredxSpiritx is he really like that in the book? or is he evil?

  • @Americangal18 He is JUST like that x It is an amazing portrayal x

  • @ShatteredxSpiritx Apparently from what I've heard the Frollo in this film is portrayed rather accurately to the one in the book.

  • @k3l2p Yes, it's more or less exactly the same character, only I'd say this Frollo is portrayed marginally more favourably. It's an interesting view on a previously over looked side of humanity and attempted purity.

  • Comment removed

  • @19rude87 The novel was written in French

  • @HugosNotreDame Think you can find it in English?

  • @Americangal18 Yeah, I've seen it in e-stores and such. There are also e-books.

  • @19rude87

Its based around Notre Dame, which is in France...

  • I love the way he looks at her !!!!!!!

  • woah hannibal is quasimodo (actor wise) Did not see that coming.

  • I love how awkward and shy he looks when she touches his hand @5:55! Sooooo cute! I know that in the end he's quite a dark character but it is his first love! SDJ is an amazing Frollo!

  • I like how in this film they show Claude Frollo as a compassionate person who had taken in Quasi as a child. Other than that, this is my least favourite adaptation of Hugo's story. I mean come on, what happened to Clopin's character and why is Esme so sad and mopey all the time? Even if this is a TV production, it could've been produced much better - even the 1977 TV version did a much more believable job and it was filmed in a studio with just drawings of Notre Dame in the transitions.

  • Quasimoto=half formed, i think.

    lol the priest is horny

  • Why don't I hear a single French accent?

  • RANDOMNESS!!!! 5:37

Girl: PLEASE! PLEASE! I haven't done anything!

Random guy in back: BE QUIET!

  • I feel bad for poor quasimodo D':

  • Day Lewis! How can I forget about him. Yeah he's physically match with Frollo and he absolutely can act. In Nine somebody that doesn't know him would just believe that he's a real italian. He as a french? sure wouldn't be a problem for him

  • so many good filmmakers on this earth but why can't any of them make the real version, I mean like the novel

  • @HerrMond seriously you're so right! They should make a real movie of this novel.

  • @gianina17 I'm thinking about Terrence Mallick or maybe Quentin Tarantino would make a superb version lol. And for Claude Frollo...I thought Ralph Fiennes or Christoph Waltz would be perfect. You got another idea?

  • @HerrMond Those are some pretty great directors, no doubt they would give this novel justice in the big screen. I would love Ralph Fiennes as Frollo but Daniel Day Lewis is my primary choice.

  • Dot Cotton!!!

  • how are they gonna get rid of a baby just cuz it's ugly, and still say they work for God?

  • i dont mean to sound dumb..but is this the real life version of hunch back of notre dame?

    i never seen this before....

  • Quasimoto is supost to be 4 when he is found.

  • Same! And the soundtrack is just epic. Alan Menken is a brilliant!

  • Luv the music at the beginning ^^

Frollo was thinking of raising his own personal slave, not charity. >.> Wow yeah I liked cartoon Esmeralda more, but I suppose this is more realistic too tho since everyone is saying she was actually kidnapped by the gypsies. And the guy at 6:42 looks way more like Frollo, just dye his hair grey!

  • OMG! That's...that's...CADFAEL!

He looks exactly the same as he does playing Cadfael. And it's roughly the same time period as well. HA! I'm going to have trouble seeing his as a baddie. Or anyone other than Cadfael, really.

  • i didn't remember thaat guy being so nice

  • Dude, this has got half the cast of eastenders in it!

  • Funny, I way prefered the ethnic-portrayal of Esmerelda in the cartoon-version from the 90s than this, I think it's more accurate to what a gypsy looks like. She could practically play a nazi she's so fair

  • and blue-eyed too! I agree with you. Salma Hayek was also a good one.

  • i know what you mean she is really "white" but i think she is fair in the book too, because she was actually stolen by gypsies, they gave esmes mom quasimodo and took esmeralda because she was so beautiful!

  • according to the original book, she wasnt born into the ethnicity of the gypsies, she was a normal french girl that was kidnapped by the gypsies who left Quasimodo in her place, so she really is only a gypsy by cultural identity

  • no, he wasn't that much of an ass hole in the book, they just made him like that so he can look more evil.. that's what I think though =/

  • my fav movie ever

  • Try to watch the franch version of this movie, the musical, that's my favourite. In movies it's difficult to fallow all the most importants parts from such a grate level as Notre Dame de Paris.

  • esmeralda = white skin...

...hmph,she wasn't a white skined in the book or the disney film...

  • gypsies aren't white they are mixed of African Arab and maybe a bit of European but mostly Sicilian with is a mix of African

  • some are spanish

  • Lmao. True. But they were quite ignorant about disabilities. For all they knew, he was a demon.

I love Disney's Hunchback of Notre Dame. Not accurate, but it is a children's movie :P

  • And yet, they still have Esmeralda pole dancing. ;)

  • Comment removed

  • Lol, Esmeralda was bad-ass in the Disney version. I actually prefer Disney's Esme to the actual one. She was very naive and clingy. She's one of my favourite Disney girls!

  • When Frollo is talking to the guard and the looks at Esmeralda is one of the best pieces of acting I´ve ever seen. Sir Derek Jacobi looks REALLY like a man who has just fallen in love. It´s brilhant

  • The acting in the scene of Quasimodo's adoption and partial christening could have been better.

  • Sir Derek is among the top 20 actors of the last century IMO. He is an incredible actor. If you have the chance, watch him in "I, Claudius", the 13 part BBC production of Robt Graves' book of the same name.

  • Derek is fantastic as Frollo!!!

  • Oh, I love those old Disney movies! Hate those Pixar movies!

  • you hate Toy story :( but but but its........such a childhood memory, why??

  • She has her reasons, my dear.

Come. There is no need to pay heed to her.

    She is hopeless.

  • I love the kid at 8:01 who just smiles directly at the camera. XD

Gringoire looks exactly how I imagined him here; Sundquist has his awesome, dorky qualities down pat.

  • aha! at 5:40 that guy just pops up from nowhere and says 'be quet!' ohh, that was funny!

  • @ShoutOut159

I didn't even realized the first time, but now I had to laugh! xD

Cool beginning, I think I'm really going til the end ^^

  • @ShoutOut159

    lol

  • i was excited to see notre dame just because quazimoto lived there lol (not really but you know) it was awesome though. this movie is amazing and will forever remain a classic :) music is incredible to!

  • I love the book's ending - everyone dies but the goat!

  • No, Phoebus, Fleur de Lys, Gringoire and the goat Djali live.

  • I actually laughed out loud reading that!

  • she is very hot,man

  • Better if they stuck to the story: Dom Frollo first saw Esmeralda dancing in the square during the festival: she was 15 to his 35 years old.

  • It would be pretty inappropriate if they got a 15-year-old to play the part of Esmeralda...

  • Inappropriate but accurate: a 15 year old in 14th or 15th century Paris was viewed as a young adult.

  • the 2 disney movies based their lead girls on this part of the movie.

in the first disney film, esmerelda danced just to entertain. in the sequel, madaellaine and her evil master did a show to distract the peasants while other thieves stole the peasants luxuries, such as necklaces, money, etc.

  • lol John Gay Cast

  • I dont understand, who is Clupin?

  • Clopin was King of the Gypsies and Esmeralda's guardian after her parents died.

  • only the coolest person in the world...!

King of the Gypsies. In the Hugo novel he marries Esmeralda in order to save someone or other from Clopin who was going to kill him.

    Yeah

  • Clopin is the King of the Vagabonds - in the book, anyway.

  • I actually waas going rent this, but I stumle when I was looking for the disney version.

    yay me!

  • this was one of my favourite stories when I was little! I loved the disney version but this is better!

  • whos the actress that plays Esmeralda?! shes incredibly beautiful!

  • Comment removed

  • Lesley-Anne Down.

  • mandame una en castellano o subtitulada mono

  • perfect! I am sooo happy that this is on youtube. We're doing a novel study on it in French class and this will make it a lot easier to understand. I loved the book in french....looking forward to it!

  • esmeralda is so pretty :)

  • qualcuno sa se esiste una versione ITALIANA di esto film?

    W FROLLO =)

  • I know only there is a version with Italian dubbing

  • The story about The Hunchback of Notre Dame is the most beautiful story ever. I have been obsessed with everything about it for about 2 years now.

When i'm older and have kids, I am going to make them watch this movie. It has such amazing morals.

  • @Lizzy4bue

and dont forget the great French Writer & Poet VICTOR HUGO being all that

  • and dont forget the great French Writer & Poet VICTOR HUGO being all that ^^

  • I have been looking for this version (1982) on dvd. I found one on ebay but it is a region 2...I need region 1 for USA. Does anyone know if it is available? I LOVE this movie. My French teacher showed it to us in high school and I have wanted to see it again ever since. Thank you soooo much for posting this video!!!

  • The Region 1 DVD came out today.

  • Thank you very much. I just bought it on ebay!!

  • has someone uploaded all the versions of this movie?

  • What "all the versions of this movie"? Could you explain, please?

  • Oh well I heard there were different versions and I wasn't sure if they were all uploaded.

  • I've heard that when this movie came out in 1982 it was longer (150 minutes). However I searched both on VHS and DVD, but I was able to find only this one.

  • No I meant different years.

    Like 1923, 1939, 1956, 1982, 1996 *animated*

    Were there others or not?

  • yes, they are on youtube :)

  • See the playlists on my account

  • i'm obseesed with h.o.n.d after seeing this........i want to buy the book and ALWAYS read it...........i want to LEARN french in school now (and i've always hated that subject but now it's my favourite) and i also want to go to paris....to go into notre dame .......... i'm obsessed with this movie and sir derek jacobi (but whoever put that wig on him needs a good kick up the a**e)

  • you should buy the book. it's such a great story. victor hugo is one of the greatest authors ever.

  • Agreed! Both this and Les Miserables have wonderful adaptations, but if you really want to witness the genius at work, you must find it in Victor Hugo's writing!

  • i loved les miserables!

  • Which one is Clopin?

  • Right?

    I'm confused.

  • I can see how Frollo got caught by those eyes, that face, curly hair, and that voice of Esmeralda's, cause I did! :)

  • I love Sir Derek Jacobi here. His Frollo is stunning, very different from the other "versions" of the character (for instance from the 1956 one, though I also adore it), less dark and yet fascinating. Thank you so much for uploading this movie on YT, I've been searching for it.

  • ...did the Disney movie steal the intro music from this movie? :X

  • isn't that view of Notre Dame a painting?

  • derek jacobi makes frollo look kind and caring

    he's awesome!!!!!

  • Esmeralda is so beautiful

  • Sorry to point it out but the person who wrote the script made me laugh... Last name is Gay? Lol

  • Derek Jacobi!

  • Lesley Anne-Down, isn't she Jackie in B&B?

  • thank u

  • ... and very "stage-like" xD

  • Very much early 80:s :D

  • WOW...this Esmeralda is a FAR cry from the dark skinned, fiesty version in the Disney movie.... I think I like that one better, but this one has her appeal also.

  • It´s just me or when she grabs Frollo´s hand he seems like a teenager in love?

  • I'm just curious about the English translation of the title..'Notre-Dame de Paris'could be easily translated into 'The Cathedral of Notre-Dame' or just 'Notre-Dame of Paris', and since Hugo himself preferred taking the cathedral as the title, why did they come up with 'The Hunchback of Notre-Dame', a translation that just circled around Quasimodo?

  • its in the seme snse as american titles for british books

(Harry potter and the philosopher's stone = HP and the SORCERERS stone)

people just try to make it sound original i guess.

  • the man who wrote it said that the cathedral itself was the main character but i think that got lost and peopel got confused so they made Quasimodo the main characeter sorta... i dunno really

  • Yea it was originally suppose to be the catherdral because it was written as a protest to preserving it and not modernizing it but when they changed the tittle to the hunchback of notre dome it took away from that.

  • i love this film coz im romni :D

  • is it just me, or does the actress who plays esmeralda resemble the indian actress aishwarya rai in approx. 20 years?

  • Oh I guess Disney destroyed this for me, I just keep comparing thinking the Disney version is the true version, it all messes my head up ;(

  • don't worry, disney does that to a lot of stories, did you know at the end of the little mermaid, she dies? Infact everything after when she goes back to the water is different, and there wasn't even a villain in the original story.

  • mmmm, Sorry, is it only me or she looks a BIT old for Esmeralda? Oh, I love Suchet!

  • Well techically Esmeralda is supposed to have 16 years old...She has to be older in the movies. Especially with Pheobus scenes and with the Frollo scenes..I love Suchet too. Though is a little strange see him without the little moustache!

  • no no non mi piace proprio!in questo film si scambiano i ruoli!clopin diventa cattivo e frollo buono!non va bene perchè io amo clopin!

  • wow, frollo seems so sympathic in the first scenes....I love Gringoire's voice!!! It sounds so beautiful =)

  • Amazing cast list! Saw the beginning of this in a hotel, oh...must have been almost nine years ago. Goodness, I can't wait to watch the whole thing!

  • love at fist sign. Good Heavens

  • Ah! Clopin is David Schuted...Poirot!

  • esmeralda looks hella white. haha

  • habra esta pelicula doblada al ESPAÑOL , pero no el de españa si no el de Mexico o PUERTO RICO ?'

  • that is the best and beautiful film of CUASIMODO

  • The Nun on the far left at the begining.. its Dot from Eastenders!

  • I'm glad in this version that Frollo is an archdeacon as he was intended to be in the book.

  • A superior version much of it thanks to Miss Down.

  • man, he probably felt shiverish when esmeralda touched his hand while she was begging to save her.

  • WOW!!! Esmeralda is veeery!! White in this version.

  • well, in the novel she is not a gypsy actually. she was stolen and raised by the gypsyes.
