  • Dr Karl was my virtual parent on Triple J as a teen.

  • That's actually really inspiring to me. I have been really discouraged lately because I feel like I'm not smart enough to make the kind of impact on the world that I would like to. I've always had an interest in science, especially physics, but I feel like I'm not intelligent enough to make a difference. I don't want to do something if I'm not going to be able to contribute. I've always been above average, but I thought 98th percentile was too low.

This made me feel a lot better.

  • Love the shirt!

  • Hey Dad! Great video btw!

  • Just wasted 3 minutes of my life

  • Dr Karl, you are an inspiration, I've been a fan for years, even had the pleasure of being at a dinner where you gave a presentation. Keep up the good shirts.

  • @wallymeldrum, no as in this is my friends dad -.-

  • /watch?v=-EDevhcuLcg

  • Wiki is good source for info, but not always accurate...Yes dark matter is very interesting, lols, but it bares no relation to the topic of my question!

However I did find this in another wiki article :P

"The universe is immensely large and possibly infinite in volume."

  • "We only know about 4% of space"???

How can you know there's another 96%..What makes you so sure of the actual size of "space"??

Explain how you came to that conclusion please. Because after hearing it in this video, I believe it is more than just a blindly made estimation. That is a ridiculously small percentage I'm afraid..

I personally believe that space is just space..It is endless and infinitely random just like the rest of existence.

  • @stalkerbeats wiki Dark_matter to learn about why cosmologists and astronomers alike consider it's existence in relation to the excessive gravity, orbital velocities, and temperature distributions found from observations of distant galaxies and similar objects throughout the universe :)

  • @stalkerbeats Nah dude, what he's saying is that we can only observe 4% of the matter that makes up our universe. Imagine that the universe is like a big pot of soup, all the solids of varying sizes, carrot, potato, meat/tofu, herbs & spices make up the dense matter of your soup, the rest is all water. In the universe the dense matter is galaxies, solar systems, nebulae, suns, comets & asteroids etc. They're surrounded by dark matter which, though invisible, still has mass, like the water in soup

  • @eleptheria1 I know I watched it again haha. I skipped through pretty quick the first time.

  • @stalkerbeats yeah & about the size of the universe, that's also complicated. It involves the speed of light and measuring cosmic radiation, & alot of head scratching. The universe is expanding & the speed at which it is expanding is increasing. So the further things r away from us, the faster they get, which means there r objects out there that we wont even get to see the light of, because they are moving away from us faster than we r approaching them..The universe really is a trippy place lol.

  • Thanks Dr Karl! please tell us more about what you've recently read! i'm pretty sure you didn't complete all this research on space!

  • what's the song?

  • give me your shirt

  • My friends dad...

  • @Angel9837 is a homosexual limousine driver? finish your sentence haha

  • "I have no proof there is intelligent life out there, but I'm sure there is"

Judging from youtube, there is no intelligent life on earth.....

  • @mryellow123 speak for yourself, mr yellow 123.

  • @wallymeldrum ugh...... see.....

  • spacehead!

  • I remember Dr Karl from when he was on JJJ Radio, I learned heaps from him thumbs up from me!

  • @weeves06 I have some of his books. Pretty good reads :)

  • @DagGirl Bill Gaede is better.

  • @SlimeAmTheBest Look, I'm going to be blunt. I hate reading books, so this is an exception! :P

  • Did you buy your amphetamines off Einstein?

Your director needs to tell you to slow down.

  • @Dougster800 He's been talking like this on our screens for 20yrs+ without problem.

Aussies talk pretty fast in general it seems, he talks "smart fast", American's always ask us to slow down.

  • Science is the only subject that i get A's and B's on-the rest are F's.

  • @cooldynamyteproducti science and english were my kick arse classes, we used to have biology either side of our lunch break, and we always watched documentaries after lunch, so i used to get stoned during lunch, then chill watching docos after lunch. I did really well in biology that year, but now I'm addicted to documentaries and i'm quite happy with that. At least docos teach u something!

  • @eleptheria1 you can't just listen to a documentary and think you have learned something though. You need to watch them all! Different documentaries on the same subject often contradict each other, so we are forced to decide what we believe ourselves in the end. I think that's a cool thing..In a way, all of us doco fiends are researchers/scientists hehe.

  • @stalkerbeats yeah, absolutely true. Its always best to have all the info before u make a conclusion on anything..Its the scientific method. With dark matter, they still arent 100% sure it exists, at the moment, its the best theory. I cant wait 2 hear on the news... "all matter is merely energy condensed 2 a slow vibration, we r all one consciousness experiencing itself subjectively, there's no such thing as death, life is only a dream & we r the imagination of ourselves." -bill hicks...lol

  • 4%+27%+70%= 96% you are correct

  • I actually like this channel... Very much...

  • i can't wait until humans communicate with another intelligent life form especially if it is more advanced i would just hitch a ride back to their place :p

  • he always loved bright shirts, kind of like the nutty professor. ;)

  • I like him (Y)

  • this video would be 20% cooler if he was asked: 'Do you like Friendship is Magic?'

Sorry, I'm a brony who likes science...

  • 00K GOVERMENTS GREATEST UNDERCOVER SCIENTIST EVER!!!!!!!!

  • yeah!
