  • i don't think all the tension was over "you don't believe in our god!" but more over "seriously, dude, we're all making an effort...whether you think it's bollocks or not, play along!" That's what role-playing is all about, putting yourself in someone elses shoes, turning yourself into another person/creature/being...it's all good fun. Granted, some people do take it too seriously and can become very offended, but not everyone. Just have some respect is all.

  • @supermallison this stuff is really hard you know I have been doing since I was 11 it's extremely hard and were not freaks we just have better things to do than sitting on our arses complaining about something we haven't tried yourself so in the words of elm "go back to whatever cave you came from"!!!

  • @AbsoluteScene101 wow ur so lucky wish i could do this

  • I agree with Dara. It's one thing to role play but these people are taking it way too far. They're worse than Heath ledger becoming the joker.

  • This is hilarious :'D

  • LMFAO! XD Love how Dara O Briain is preaching evolution in a fucking LARP game :P .

  • Something very very wrong

  • For Elm! rahhhhhhhhhhhh!

  • So basically it's like the SCA but with magic and elves... I have to admit, it does look like fun. And I did enjoy fighting heavy back in the day! But I came to enjoy cons more, because people would try much harder to stay in character at cons, whereas the SCA (at least in my area) tended to be more "Yeah, I'm still Fred but now I'm in a different set of clothes. You wouldn't believe what happened at work the other day-- you gonna go see the new Transformers movie?". This looks more fun!

  • ^_^ i go to this larp core

  • This is like Lost in Translation, all we need now is for Dara to be set upon by an Elf demanding he lip her stockings

  • LOL this reminds me of the flim Role Models with Seann William Scott. Obviously these guys are the wierdest and most eccentric people possible, they just a bunch of big kids who dont want to grow up basically. Least they look like they are having fun though, and if thats the case who is anybody to stop them. I would prefer to see people doing stuff like this, than people going around stabbing and attacking people, and doing other mad shit. Its not for me, but they are welcome to crack on. :-)

  • maybe they steer to another direction when they see them coming because he has a friggin CAMERAMAN with him? And that does maybe break the immersion of the game a little bit...??

Well, at least I would avoid him because of that...

  • is it me or is that narater guy wearing a builder vest thing?

  • I wonder if there's a Sci-Fi version of LARPers?

  • @lankyGigantic there is. There are different kinds of LARP. Post-apocalyptic, sci-fi, LARPs based on books/films/characters. But the most 'common' one, and the only I personally like most, is the fantasy LARP. Or the kind of LARP they are participating here.

  • @bellaKohler Oh man, I'd love to know if there were some sci-fi LARPers. I think this looks great but the whole magic and elves thing just doesn't do it for me

  • The difference between LARPers and religious nuts is that LARPers can happily take a joke about themselves. If you suggested to a LARPer that they believe any of this tripe out of character they'd think you were insane, for the same reason that the cast of LOTR don't actually think they're wizards and hobbits; it doesn't make any sense for that to be true, when you actually think about it.

  • OMG They take Elm just as seriously as christians take jesus!

  • @ChaoticSupernova Nah, they're just role-playing. It might feel surreal the first time somebody attend a LARP event and sees somebody with a straight serious face go on about their madeup gods, but it is no different than being on a film set. The few hours LARP last, you are acting our your character to the best of your ability and the more genuine you come across the greater the immersion for everybody else. But once it is all over, everybody can sit down and laugh about the events of the day.

  • @Natala00 Sorry to be late to the party but when you think about it, if all I had to do was go up to Father O'Hara and say "Hey, I have a broken wrist, can you take care of it?" and all he had to do was say, "The power of Christ heals you!" and everything just mended into place in seconds, I'd drop my stance on pro-atheism in seconds.

  • @Natala00 Yeah, this shit is harder than it looks. Staying in the character of (generally) a completely different person at all times, remembering the rules, and keeping an eye on what every single other person is doing or saying is very, very difficult. There's no script, and no real second chance if you mess up with what you've said or done.

  • I think Dara would have been better going to Maelstrom - hundreds of people and more of a social game (though there is plenty of combat around) and they don't take it so seriously and there are always newbies along. Its far more relaxed. He definatly went in over his depth with these guys. Also, this could be misleading so thought i should point out, i'm an athiest and i am god devoted in my LARP...gods are usually considered real in LARP games, but its just a game.

  • Don't know kinda wierd for me ... I would much preffer Air Soft. I tryed it twice with friend who is playing it for years. They even got permision to use old training army equipment soo its preaty badass.

  • LOL bit young arent ya for a doctor

  • hahaha thats painful ! do we really look that crazy :( haha

  • They gave out to him for not believing in a god!!!! Wat a bunch of fucking freaks!!!

  • @shazy25295 thought i'd point out, they reacted that way coz they are 'in character' and by announcing athiesm he kinda was missing the point of the game and was kinda not playing along. their characters would react in shock to such a statement as such a thing is unheard of. Just to point out, i don't take LARP that seriously, though, and i am an atheist too! :)

  • "Go Back to the cave you came from!"

    "...yeah!.."

    haha

  • Wish they did Harry Potter version of this - I would be straight there.

  • @ciaracustard i totally agree

  • that was so akward when he started hitting dara with that sword

  • @JoshRobertson142 I had to skip over that part. Way too awkward haha.

  • 'Eh, your leg is now gone.'

    'Oh? Sorry..'

  • so err.. what do you do in the LARP brothel?

  • lol FIND ELM QUICKLY

  • I would have beat someone with my shield. No joke. Just lifted it above my head and started wailing.

All the while screaming, "WHERE IS YOUR GOD NOW" more than likely.

I can get behind acting, whatever. But they took it PERSONAL when he cracked about an Elf atheist. Damn.

  • That was acting. their CHARACTERS got personal...and if you thought it real then they must have been doing a good job.

  • @3dEnthusiast No, their characters took it personally. Bear in mind this is a world where gods do actually intervene and zap people, and give power to their priests. Being an atheist in a world like that is like insisting that the Earth is flat. The players didn't mind at all. The *characters* thought he was crazy,

  • someone should record a podcast of the weekly battles

  • Fall Out Boy

  • this reminds me of that bit in Peep Show.

    xD

  • olololololololololol "by the power of elm bless level 4...please?"

  • What a bunch of daft, gushing knobs.

  • lol 4:07 thats hilarious

  • "Disturbance in the force"

  • very rp a guy was wearing a bright purple shirt ¬.¬

  • The literal village people;)

  • a disturbance in the force lol

  • wow these people take this shit seriously!!!!! dara looks soooooo lost!!!!

  • Fuck... me... No, I definatley couldn't do this. They take it so seriously I'd be apt to lose my temper or something... O_o

  • see i reckon i cud do that larp, i reckon i cud have sum fun ambushing n bashing with axes ect... but all this "i bless u with elm level 4" and shit... tht annoys me, for me larp wud jus b bout fighting :D

  • lol Agreed.

  • you could look at medival reenactment groups then. A friend of mine goes to one, and they learn real sword fighting and beat the crap out of each other with axes and plate mail and shit. Some groups are a little bit strict with the LARPing, like making you wear period clothes and things, but nothing really bad at all.

  • Most fantasy settings have some hilariously over the top punishment for Atheists waiting in the afterlife.

Correspondingly, most fantasy settings make no bones about the fact that their gods are complete dickholes.

  • yeah yeah, send the atheist out as the first line of arrow fodder...

  • I love 0:58

    "Lets FUUUUCKKK!"

  • Wahahahahahahaaa!

    HOOOOOOOOOHahahahahahahahaaaa!

    WAHAHAHAHAHAHABWAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!

  • "Go back to whatever cave you come from"

    Yeah........

haha, Dara is lege and this larping is basically what you did as a kid but with adults and adult rules.

  • hahahahahahshahahahahahah

    bwahahahahahahahahahahahha!!

  • a bit young for a doctor arent you?

  • they all sorta fall over the place and Dara rubs his stomach lol

  • I think some of these guys are a tad to serious and I'm a LARPer!

  • "Go back to whatever cave you came from!"

    "...Yeah..." LMFAO!

  • 3:38 rofl!

  • i tried larping once wi ma mate we thought it was like: dress up as some super natural arse kicking machine, charge other team with foam weapons shouting DIE MOTHER FUCKER. so after when we were in our costumes, we were sat around talking wi some of the others...the pair of us made the big mistake also of saying the whole 'gods rule thing' was stupid and we didn't believe in it...it was at that precise point i thought 'these guys are fecking nut jobs' (i assume dara was thinking the same thing)

  • Poor Poor Dara

    haha

  • omg these people really needa sort there lives out

  • Find Elm quickly LMFAO

  • @QtommyQ 2 seconds later...i think i found him! lol

  • There's a disturbance in the force.

    ROFL

  • I'm thinking....no.

  • HAHAHHAHAHAHA

    3:39

It's soooo funny how he's so into it.

and Dara is just like ...yeah.....

  • holy shit ! my elfs name is CHARLES DARWIN

  • "go back to whatever cave you came from!"

    "Yeaaaah"

    LMAO

  • the guys hitting him lmfao!

  • This looks like fun...

Ive never actually played W.O.W but thats cuz I heard u need really fast broadband for it??

  • 'its like a disturbance in the force' lmao

  • It's easy to see how the 'seriousness' of it can put you off, but it's not that hard big a deal when you're doing it. Everyone knows that it'll only stay fun if you all go with the flow - otherwise it'd be like going to a movie and spending the whole time yelling "he's just an actor, he's not really dead!".

Btw, Rule 7 doesn't really refer to staying serious. It's there to stop people trying to be lawyers with the game. "Rules 38,46 & 83 together make me immortal." "No you're not: Rule 7."

  • You sound like a serious LARPer, have you been doing it for long?

  • 8 years playing, 3 of them helping to run events. Best hobby I've found, as long as people remember that it's done for fun.

  • It's great fun, but HOT DAMN is it ever expensive. I'd love to do it more than I do if I had some way of paying for it

  • Shop around a bit - depending on the sort of events run, the prices vary greatly (especially for 1 day events - can go as low as £10) and a lot of the kit can be got 2nd hand or improvised.

  • I'm conflicted too. I have friends who LARP and from them I know how much fun LARPing is but just the whole seriousness of it I couldn't last five minutes without laughing and breaking rule 7

  • this is kinda hard to watch

  • I think i feel sorry for these people...I know I shouldn't because I guess this makes them happy but...I feel conflicted.

If they get an agent they could get paid for doing this stuff....

  • Don't worry - your opinion on what we find fun doesn't affect our happiness one way or the other. Feel free to be as judgemental as you like. :)

  • :-) Good. I'd def feel sorry for you guys if other peoples opinion changed the way you feel about your hobby. And I don't mean to be judgemental...just cautious. I know a few friends that play W.O.W. and take it WAY too seriously. Starts messing with their real life. If it's under controll, fine, but when it starts making reality difficult, I question it very much.

No scorn at all, just cautious from experience :-). lol even if I get thumbs down for my concern, I care not.

    Cheers!

  • WOW is different from LARPing... and it's not always that serious.

  • I seriously hate these LARPers, now I've done pretty much any and every geeky thing there is but this kind of LARPing is too much even for me.

It's a rare collection of nutcases and the setting is just so lame and it lacks depth and feel entirely, it gets hillarious when you meet those who who actually are elitist about this kind of thing too.

That being saids, there is such a thing as proper larping and re-enactment, it just gets a bad name thanks to people like these fellows.

  • I personally don't LARP, but quite a few of my mates do, and while it's not my bag they seem to have a good time. I just don't get involved, but I don't see the need to rag on them, it's their bag and I do all kinds of things other people see as weird and lame

  • when he mentioned atheism the elf playing woman looked at him like he had just killed a cat.

they would have actually lynched him if he said the "distrubance in the force" bit out loud.

still, whatever floats your boat, i guess.

  • it depends larp is cheese and ham, generally a funny remark can actually go down quite well, even if it is a bit out of character...geeks have a good sense of humour. Granted these are the sort of people who talk about their character background -.-

  • 'ive gone queesy'

    hahahah

  • The whole god thing would put me off. Find ELM, where? Is it like find waldo? Do i get a prize? What, no lugauge or fridge freezer?

And people, over acting some one walked over your grave, but Daras response is great: i feel quesy, like its a bad bout of indigestion!!

  • this is all very bizarre

  • lmao when he said he didnt believe in their elven god they all looked so sad like why arent you playing along dara.lol

  • 3:42...badass :P

  • 3:07 awesome

  • At 1.30!

Some Bloke: 'An unusual thing, an elf that does not exist...'

    Very unusual!

  • im open minded but this is strange... kinda unnerving

  • lolz at the atheism elf

  • lol the fighting bit looks fun but idk about the roleplaying stuff

  • lol man i feel sorry for dara doing that battle, surely it must be hard to keep a straight face!!

  • Lol disturbance in the Force

  • hey fair do's you may not want to do it but there's not reason to be a dick, theyre just having fun (im not involved in this sort of thing btw)

  • omg, poor dara

  • Love Dara's contribution on 3:44.

Serious guy - "Go back to whatever cave you came from"

    Dara - "Yeh!"

  • the guy in the blue looks like the one or bbc's robin hood !

  • That's mad cos on part 3 in the audience theres a guy who looks like jonas armstrong!

  • nice:D

  • "what ay what go away" soo funny

" go bac to the cave you came from!!....(dara)"yeah!

  • Lorien Trust probably run the biggest LARP event in the UK. Their main event (The Gathering) attracts about 2000 people and is held in Derby.

  • that guy 25 secs in looks like mr haddock!

  • it IS mr haddock!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • lmao love how serious Dara's taking it with his disturbance in the force line

  • sorry but the bit after the guy came in telling them that they all felt a sense of unsettlement just made me laugh so much.

  • lol i would have pissed myself laughing all the way through it lol oh, best not, mght be eaten by an ORC :P

  • "Very young for a docter arnt ye?"

  • I love how awkward Dara looked all through the fight!

  • Go back to whatever cave you came from! *serious as owt

    Ye...... *wtf .. dude

  • Love this! XD

    whats the song at 4:00?

  • this ain't a scene, it's an arms race -- Fall Out Boy

  • Some of them clearly take themselves WAY too seriously. I cringed all the way through the OTT reaction to Dara coming out as an atheist.

  • Well, it's in character. After all, in fantasy settings, the Gods aren't a matter of personal belief, they're an established fact performing miracles and smiting people on a daily basis.

Declaring yourself and atheist in such circumstances would be akin to declaring "yeah, I don't really believe in gravity" in real life. :P

  • It's HIS character, he made it up...

  • Ruined by the fall out gays.

  • What a bunch of i mean, NO WORDS lol -Dara is hilarious, dunno how he went through this without just goin "here wait a minute like.." or takin the piss like lol.

  • Why was there a ninja?

  • Because there are pirates! If there are pirates, there are Ninjas!

  • lol overact much?

  • i go to these events at skullduggery and there awesome!

  • lol! he's come over all queasy!

  • yeah, it diddn't say that.

  • They're not lord of the rings roleplayers, they're generic role-players, no LOTR specific content.
