i don't think all the tension was over "you don't believe in our god!" but more over "seriously, dude, we're all making an effort...whether you think it's bollocks or not, play along!" That's what role-playing is all about, putting yourself in someone elses shoes, turning yourself into another person/creature/being...it's all good fun. Granted, some people do take it too seriously and can become very offended, but not everyone. Just have some respect is all.
@supermallison this stuff is really hard you know I have been doing since I was 11 it's extremely hard and were not freaks we just have better things to do than sitting on our arses complaining about something we haven't tried yourself so in the words of elm "go back to whatever cave you came from"!!!
So basically it's like the SCA but with magic and elves... I have to admit, it does look like fun. And I did enjoy fighting heavy back in the day! But I came to enjoy cons more, because people would try much harder to stay in character at cons, whereas the SCA (at least in my area) tended to be more "Yeah, I'm still Fred but now I'm in a different set of clothes. You wouldn't believe what happened at work the other day-- you gonna go see the new Transformers movie?". This looks more fun!
LOL this reminds me of the flim Role Models with Seann William Scott. Obviously these guys are the wierdest and most eccentric people possible, they just a bunch of big kids who dont want to grow up basically. Least they look like they are having fun though, and if thats the case who is anybody to stop them. I would prefer to see people doing stuff like this, than people going around stabbing and attacking people, and doing other mad shit. Its not for me, but they are welcome to crack on. :-)
maybe they steer to another direction when they see them coming because he has a friggin CAMERAMAN with him? And that does maybe break the immersion of the game a little bit...??
Well, at least I would avoid him because of that...
@lankyGigantic there is. There are different kinds of LARP. Post-apocalyptic, sci-fi, LARPs based on books/films/characters. But the most 'common' one, and the only I personally like most, is the fantasy LARP. Or the kind of LARP they are participating here.
@bellaKohler Oh man, I'd love to know if there were some sci-fi LARPers. I think this looks great but the whole magic and elves thing just doesn't do it for me
The difference between LARPers and religious nuts is that LARPers can happily take a joke about themselves. If you suggested to a LARPer that they believe any of this tripe out of character they'd think you were insane, for the same reason that the cast of LOTR don't actually think they're wizards and hobbits; it doesn't make any sense for that to be true, when you actually think about it.
@ChaoticSupernova Nah, they're just role-playing. It might feel surreal the first time somebody attend a LARP event and sees somebody with a straight serious face go on about their madeup gods, but it is no different than being on a film set. The few hours LARP last, you are acting our your character to the best of your ability and the more genuine you come across the greater the immersion for everybody else. But once it is all over, everybody can sit down and laugh about the events of the day.
@Natala00 Sorry to be late to the party but when you think about it, if all I had to do was go up to Father O'Hara and say "Hey, I have a broken wrist, can you take care of it?" and all he had to do was say, "The power of Christ heals you!" and everything just mended into place in seconds, I'd drop my stance on pro-atheism in seconds.
@Natala00 Yeah, this shit is harder than it looks. Staying in the character of (generally) a completely different person at all times, remembering the rules, and keeping an eye on what every single other person is doing or saying is very, very difficult. There's no script, and no real second chance if you mess up with what you've said or done.
I think Dara would have been better going to Maelstrom - hundreds of people and more of a social game (though there is plenty of combat around) and they don't take it so seriously and there are always newbies along. Its far more relaxed. He definatly went in over his depth with these guys. Also, this could be misleading so thought i should point out, i'm an athiest and i am god devoted in my LARP...gods are usually considered real in LARP games, but its just a game.
Don't know kinda wierd for me ... I would much preffer Air Soft. I tryed it twice with friend who is playing it for years. They even got permision to use old training army equipment soo its preaty badass.
@shazy25295 thought i'd point out, they reacted that way coz they are 'in character' and by announcing athiesm he kinda was missing the point of the game and was kinda not playing along. their characters would react in shock to such a statement as such a thing is unheard of. Just to point out, i don't take LARP that seriously, though, and i am an atheist too! :)
@3dEnthusiast No, their characters took it personally. Bear in mind this is a world where gods do actually intervene and zap people, and give power to their priests. Being an atheist in a world like that is like insisting that the Earth is flat. The players didn't mind at all. The *characters* thought he was crazy,
see i reckon i cud do that larp, i reckon i cud have sum fun ambushing n bashing with axes ect... but all this "i bless u with elm level 4" and shit... tht annoys me, for me larp wud jus b bout fighting :D
you could look at medival reenactment groups then. A friend of mine goes to one, and they learn real sword fighting and beat the crap out of each other with axes and plate mail and shit. Some groups are a little bit strict with the LARPing, like making you wear period clothes and things, but nothing really bad at all.
i tried larping once wi ma mate we thought it was like: dress up as some super natural arse kicking machine, charge other team with foam weapons shouting DIE MOTHER FUCKER. so after when we were in our costumes, we were sat around talking wi some of the others...the pair of us made the big mistake also of saying the whole 'gods rule thing' was stupid and we didn't believe in it...it was at that precise point i thought 'these guys are fecking nut jobs' (i assume dara was thinking the same thing)
It's easy to see how the 'seriousness' of it can put you off, but it's not that hard big a deal when you're doing it. Everyone knows that it'll only stay fun if you all go with the flow - otherwise it'd be like going to a movie and spending the whole time yelling "he's just an actor, he's not really dead!".
Btw, Rule 7 doesn't really refer to staying serious. It's there to stop people trying to be lawyers with the game. "Rules 38,46 & 83 together make me immortal." "No you're not: Rule 7."
Shop around a bit - depending on the sort of events run, the prices vary greatly (especially for 1 day events - can go as low as £10) and a lot of the kit can be got 2nd hand or improvised.
