I went to ND. I stepped on the field about where Knute Rockne once stood. I looked up and asked "I know I am not suppose to ask for anythig for myself..but just this once, just this time..if you could see your way clear I would like the chance to coach High School football"...four days later I was called by the , then, head coach of Don Bosco HS in New Jersey and asked if I wanted to interview for a coaching job. I ended up coaching there for four years. ND is very special.
I was just watching this and thinking about this still gives me goosebumps every time I hear this song. What an amazing song. I will forever listen to this song.
The pianist is the composer, John Scully. Played in the NFL for 10 years for the Falcons. Consensus All-American at ND. In my Music Theory 101 class with me in 1976, if I recall. Nice guy. Had an evil laugh. I never could believe that his hands would get so beat up playing on Saturday (he was a center) and on Monday he could come in and play piano so well.
My Dad was a ND fan for more than 70 yrs. He asked about ND scores in his WWII letters to my Mom. All 6 kids were @ ND by age 2. He brought Grotto holy water home for Mom when she had breast cancer. This was 1 of his favorite songs. It was played @ the funeral home! His casket was Irish green w/ the Irish blessing inside & bottles of ND holy water next to him-the Perrier of holy water! This song still gives me goosebumps & makes me cry. I love you my Irish Dad & I love the Irish of Notre Dame!!
@colleenm1013 Almost same story with me my friend, My dad and myself biggest ND FANS IN THE WORLD! I lost my father 2 weeks ago, everybody says he is up there with KNUTE, the 4 horseman etc...
I would love it if it was sung at Celtic Park in Glasgow. 60,000 sons and daughters of Ireland at every home game, it would sound good if we adapted the words. Especially when we are beating the likes of Manchester Utd and Rangers.
@pat2325 I agree think ofe the voices singing something like "here come the Irish to win the game" I get goose bumps when I hear this song I just get images of Croke Park or Landsdowne road chearing on the boys in green
as a son of eire< do ye mind me askin wats ur fasination wit are land so green dat most of ye ave neva seen????? dont mean any disrespect just love ta know???????
@justfulbredirish I guess its important from people to identify with nationality, and what better nationality to be but a son or daughter to Ireland..After all we are the men of the Gael the men that god made mad for all or wars are merry and our songs are sad.....
@justfulbredirish ~the song above sings of the beautiful campus at ND, not of the ole sod in Ireland~fyi~my grandda was from Norhtern Ireland & I have been there many times
@wpetrey34743 I live in GA.With so many on probation here at UGA believe me seeing a team like ND,it's scholars and garduation rate is a breath of fresh air.
is it too much to have asked her to pronounced notre dame properly? cant wait for football season to start...while this song may pump up the alumni how about a song that pumps up the players and the subway alumni such as myself?
@BRONXIRISH78 then this song should pump you up!!!!! or you arent the fan you think you are.......just got home from ND...and i listened to this a few times there....
Beautiful song. Ever notice that all good ND songs are about the past. I suppose most songs are, but there is no other school that has to live so much in the past as this one....
As an Irish man born and raised, who moved to America from 1997-2006 and naturalised as a Citizen, I am proud of being both Irish and American, proud to hold citizenship of both and this song makes me proud as a 'true' Irish American!
even though Notre Dame has become elitist and wants to become another ivy-league school,by only accepting kids with GPAs above 4.0 and basically a nerd.Instead of that kid with a 3.5 plus played sports, volunteered and just absolutly loves the university...But its still Notre Dame and it will ALWAYS be special
As a Irish Fan for a lot of years. I love this song. I was on campus for the first time a couple of years ago for the boston college game. I fell in love with the campus. I love the Fighting Irish. I did Marching Band in High School. and seeing the Band and the Irish Guard, Man it was something. GO IRISH YOU ARE ND
Notre Dame is a place wher you can definately feel the presence of God. I think that's what makes it so special and why people fall "in love" with it.
This song is amazing and brought tears to my eyes. I went to Notre Dame and it is my proudest personal accomplishment. Even though I didn't always love it, I am so VERY proud to be from ND.
man this is my favortie school in the whole world i love this school so much and wish i was smart enought to go. Im a swimmer, and i would love to swim there, but im just not fast enough its such a shame cause i just love that school
Search "The O'Neill Brothers" and "Here Come the Irish" in the iTunes Music Store . . . you'll find it as track no. 1 on that album. It's performed by Cathy Richardson who I believe is singing here.
no words can ever describe my devotion to this team...ive seen it in person on sept. 5th against nevada...my heart is with this program FOREVER...win or lose!
everytime I hear this song I get goose bumps and I start to cry cuz I love ND more than any school my brother went there and my whole family fell in love with this place... when u step on campus its not like stepping on any other campus... the reason I cry is because I really want to go there but I dont think I will get in... I will always be an Irish fan no matter what... WE ARE ND!!!
Jon Scully and Kathy Richardson performed at the Knute Rockne Dinner in Chicago last nite and
it sent chills down my spine and a tear to my eye . They received a standing ovation at the end of the song and then Lou Holtz spoke what a nite for Irish Alumni
As the son of a mother who was 100% Irish, and coming from a family of Irish Catholics who love Notre Dame, this song is as good as it gets. Go Irish!
Having been exposed to the ND experience through my daughter, and ND athlete and graduate (sorry to be redundant), I can say that to me, there truly is magic in the name. Having and Irish ancestry and having visited the land of leprechauns on two occasions, Ireland, too, is truly magical to me. This is a beautiful song and today is played prior to most ND home contests, which I had the pleasure of hearing several times. I get a tightness in my throat every time I hear it, which is often.
I remember driving away from campus when this song came on my iPod shuffle. By the time I made it to the airport my face was blotchy and dried out, my hair damp and my mascara smudged (I thought it was waterproof!)
it's simple why people hate us....We are the best and they wanna knock us of the top of the hill...even in defeat ND still has all eyes on it....everyone wants to know what the IRISH are doing....
Im from Ireland and can safely say i never in my life heard of this university(?)/song until i searched the word Irish on here, so um what is Irish about it?, apart from the French name and the fact that its in the US that is lol
I often wonder why so many have difficulty appreciating our love for Notre Dame, I think next time someone questions us, we will just play this song. Our hearts forever, love thee Notre Dame
yeah im from Massachusetts, which is BC country, but I am a big ND fan. Went to ND-Navy game at ND stadium in 2005. I loved the experience and this song kicks ass!!!!! I am of irish background as well I guess that is how I a became a huge fan and well of course a major network like NBC.
This song both embodies Irish heritage and a profound love for the University of Notre Dame... I am very proud to be a part of each and am a huge fan of this song... especially live
Hi My name is Frank a ND fanatic! Can anyone tell who this lovely young lass is who sings this song? She is awesome!! I love the song!! Also is this a movie??
ND will win a national title by 2010. Mark my words!
And the last thing he said to me -- "Rock," he said - "sometime, when the team is up against it -- and the breaks are beating the boys -- tell them to go out there with all they got and win just one for the Gipper...
Brings tears to my eyes every time I hear it. NO other school has that much tradition that ONE song can give you so many different feelings.
OK on a side note. I am SICK of no one fearing coming to play the Irish any more. To everyone that has season tickets or goes to games. DONT JUST SIT THERE. We need to bring the fear back to ND stadium. A rowdy crowd from the kick off is good for 7 pts.
This song plays on a radio station in South Bend at 5:00pm on the Friday before gameday. It is really a great football experience in South Bend. GO IRISH!!!!!!!!
Go IU!

This song both embodies Irish heritage and a profound love for the University of Notre Dame... I am very proud to be a part of each and am a huge fan of this song... especially live
