The songwriter doesn't understand the meaning of the word 'renegade'. A renegade is someone who says he'll do one thing, then reneges and doesn't honor his word. In modern times, a 'renegade' is someone who skips bail -- i.e. doesn't show up for criminal court even though he swore to a judge that he would appear. In the context of the song, the word makes no sense because someone facing capital punishment wouldn't be granted bail.
