  • man, nice job. I want to get into some jazz grass stuff but I have no idea where to start.. Should I learn chord structures and scales first?..

  • @TheJamdolinPlayer

Hey Jam, chords and scales are essential. Couple of good books out there, and a bunch of tabs for melodies on the internet. I would start just like you did with grass, learn some easy melodies/ chord changes to tunes like All of Me, Lady be Good, Sweet Georgia Brown, etc. Lots of material out there that isn't too difficult. Jazz and bluegrass are pretty similar, both improv based folk music, one is just harmonically more complicated. Good luck, and take care.

Cool thanks for the info man... I have the 1st Grisman Qunitet album and there is some inspiring stuff on there. I started reading a bunch of stuff on modes and all that that and was totally lost, A good friend told me that you can be really good and say you play all my ear but when you understand why you are doing what you are doing than you really can excel... keep on pickin!
