I'm analyzing this poem for my Honors English class and I need an opinion. I feel the father is very hypocritical about his wishes for his son to conform to masculinity and abandon his dreams as a poet since a lot of what he speaks is in metaphor. I know the poet gives the narrator words but I don't know If I could make a valid point on that
Wow, this gave me chills. I think anyone who had a dad like this will find this poem disconcerting and uncomfortable in all the right ways. I love it when something hits close to home and resonates like this. She's got a fantastic delivery too. It honestly looked cathartic for her to do this.
Jon Lajoie favorited early May. Averaging near 50-100 hits a day since. One more good break and this could get big numbers.
I agree that this is an amazing performance and poem. It strikes a nerve certainly with people who had a parent of this sort and even just people who had friends with parents like this.
What Shira Erlichman does here is called poetry, when it is really working as it can.
@ThompsonLoM I've listened to this so many times, I've realized Shira Erlichman managed a nice literary ruse by titling this "Daddy's Parking Lot Sermon". The voice is in fact the Sister's voice, almost throughout. Proof that art needs deceit.
One aspect I can pick out is that the boy feels like an elevator stuck between two floors: the gender binary. It's about a father telling a son he must conform to the male aspect of the modern gender binary and embody machismo instead of his poetry and imagination. Also, the father just wants his kid to be more of an "adult" and give up his childish whims of wanting to be fire, the moon, a dalmation.
The poem is about a young poet with his head in the clouds. His dad wants him to be a manly man and not be so sensitive. He wants him to be like every other boy. They look down upon him and think somethings wrong with him because hes a poet.
@Ktangalakis sometimes the ugly truth is funny because you know that it is the truth and at the same time you can't believe it so you're shocked and that laughter is just a manifestation of that shock.
Any of you people here could go up and talk about things on a mic. I think that's the point of this stuff. Expression is beautiful, but all these poets are the same. Everyone expresses differently though and I respect this girls words. I just don't particularly like it.

I don't know why. All poetry jams sound the same. Nothing really new in terms of what's going on... Especially the way she is rhyming.

It's about a lot of things, mostly identity.

Why are they laughing? This isn't funny.. This is tragic and beautiful and skillfully crafted. They just don't know how to respond.
