The apples have to do with the Shinigami world.

In their world, there isn't much food, and apples grow, though they are so dry they're basically sand.

Which is why Ryuk likes human apples.

yeah, he's a shimigami, and they don't have food in the death god world. there apples look like green peppers and taste like sand, and he explains that apples to them are pretty much like alcohol to people, they are addictive and they get withdrawal symptoms when they are 'cut off'
