  • Already one of my favorite artists and he goes and tops it all with this amazing tune! It takes on a new form when played loud in the car cruising down the freeway.

  • This song makes you wonder if you are treating your Partner the best that you can.Brilliant and beautiful.A pure thinking song!

  • I would love to say something about how talented Hawley is, and how kids listen to shit modern pop music with no talent, but no kids will ever see this bloody comment!

And i`m getting old, which doesn`t help.

  • if a guy ever sings this ballad to me, I'd marry him in a second.

  • This is pure genius, never heard of Richard Hawley until this christmas when I saw him on TV. Can't stop listening to him now. Open up your door is my favourite.

  • I love everything Richard Hawley records!

  • Simple, beautiful ... stunningly truthful.

  • It was your birthday yesterday...

so many feelings this song ! ! !

  • just awesome... pure feelings coming out in form of musical notes and words...

  • This makes me cry :) He is so fine!!

  • Love it!

  • Quiet, sad and gentle. the sound of 5:00am. Slate grey where the clouds should be and rows of houses in the rain.

  • Richard Hawley sounds very similar to Jens Lekman.

  • iam a guy and when i herd this for the first time i shed a tear , BUT JUST ONE! Cus iam a tough dude!..

  • I am in love in his voice. I am in love in Richard.

  • I love this song. Amazing.

  • Stunning.

  • The more I listen to this guy, the more I like his style. Kind of a '60's Bacharach vibe.

  • Try listening to this at dusk on the moors to the west overlooking Sheffield. This will help one realise what has been going on for centuries - that every night the soul gently rises from the ground and silently cascades into the city below.

Hawley, like all great artists, has captured a flake of eternity.

  • What a beautiful chanson

  • My sister was in your class at school ha ha in Sheff, Richard back in the 70s/80s!

  • love richard, but man, FUCK vevo

  • this is THE most beautiful song in the world

  • This song feels so heartfelt and sincere. People like Richard need to break into the mainstream and have a wider positive influence on music.

  • Charlotte Church had this track as one of her favourite tracks on Zoe Ball's Radio 2 show. Charlotte - what a beautiful track, thank you for bringing Richard Hawley to my attention!

  • i was listening to radio 2, and charlotte church was picking the tracks of her years, and this was one of them. never heard this song before, never even heard of richard hawley either! yet again it seems there is still some outstanding music out there still to be discovered. beautiful song. just beautiful..........

  • @tattytwo same thing happened to me. i never normally listen to radio two, but i hate anita anard's voice so much that i switched channel (i was driving home after a meeting in sevenoaks) and heard this song. at first, i thought it was an obscure sinatra song - the phrasing was so precise and original. then i heard church say it was richard hawley. news to me, i'm afraid. but i wiki'd him and discovered his connections with elbow, pulp and morrissey. neil tennant is also a fan. quality stuff.

  • it is rare when a songs lyrics grab me before the harmony like seeing a beautiful painting that speaks to you, this song paints a picture of my only love and how I cherish everything about her.... Nice work Mr Hawley...

  • This song reminds me of a darker version of Leonard Cohen's early work

  • Sounds like Frank Sinatra.

All is not lost. All is not lost...

  • I just drove home listening to Truelove's Gutter and this song came on. I sang along and was surprised that I knew every word. The street lights seemed to just go by at 3 AM and the night was restless. I've never driven home like that, what a truly magical night.

  • Here's is a toast to you Helene

To all the cinemas we ran in from the rain

I find that a really emotional line. I start blubbering.

  • Well, we should hear her version of the story !

  • Beautiful

  • Im skipping back across the ocean, we have a second chance at eternal happiness; I love you so much

  • This song is amazing! So is the whole Truelove's Gutter album.

  • Playing it again and again and again xxx

  • @nothingwrongwithlove

    just like me :)

  • I was told that Mr Hawley should be an asshole in acting to people. I don't believe that listening to those wonderful songs he makes.

some people don't have the sensibility for great romantic feelings.

and why should he fool someone who's NOT able to understand about such kind of emotionally profoundness.

I'm totally into him ! and PLEASE Mr Hawley....continue !

  • @mmbreeze am playing it again and again and again

  • RH, a gift from heaven.

  • Simply spell-binding. A true poet and musician in the truest sense.

  • Richards songs have always meant alot to me - But this one is just awesome, always brings a tear to my eye :o(

  • Thank God he cut his stringy hair, big improvement...

  • really awesome i love this song

  • love it try cheap spanish wine by r h

  • Just goes to show that music doesn't need to be complicated and complex to be beautiful and amazing.

  • I just heard this for the first time on Jonathan Ross and had to look it up. My boyfriend is away for 5 weeks working on the World Cup. My emotions are running high and this song struck a chord. Stunning.

  • super musik

  • Genius.. :-)

  • what a beautiful song and video. nothing else needs to be said.

  • whaaaat a beautiful song and video.... nothing else needs to be said.

  • I like it.

  • @tabulaerasae82 Nothing more obnoxious than the kind of self-adulation like someone proclaming they "have some really good poetry." Let the world be the judge of that.

  • Comment removed

  • re your description , let the world be the judge of that cover band , you get my point then. still they did sound very good ;)

  • just got into this guy , he is amazing!!!! i liked pulp , but i love richard hawley National treasure. thanx for post muteusa

  • this is what we call a love ballad allways selfish but yet not about you or me its an emotion who knows but I think I feel I love I hurt and this does it all it all love love love pain pain pain xxx

  • beautiful what else can i say

  • This song Gets me all the time :)....Richard you are the best singer ever i'm glad your up in the north tooo! This is inspirational stuff and i've bieng trying to get peopleto become a fan of richard :)!

  • Jay z my ass....

  • lovely song, simple arrangment, perfect.

  • with my thoughts i'm left alone...

  • enorme que gran canción

  • one of the guys who make me cry

  • what a beautiful clear and precise voice... superb. Listen to his stuff in the car all the time. Great guy.

  • Sad but also beautiful.

  • what a beautiful song........I heard this some weeks back..........very poingnant & moving inspiring & truthful

  • I have no words........i just dont have...

  • scott walker done this kinda stuff years ago

  • Your point being?

  • Saw him tonight in Bruges, pure genius!

  • Now THIS is an earnest, passionate ballad - not the cynical, manufactured stuff.

  • So true! How many songs are around that admit that the romantic "being in love" might end and will have to be replaced by earnest commitment? And he finds words for it: "Maybe I will drink a little less, come home early and not complain about the death." He sacrifices the sacred and the profane.

  • Glad you agree and a great analysis of the meaning of the song as well :) Elbow and Doves write some brilliant ballads as well - e.g. Bones of You and Kingdom of Rust.

  • Absolutely remarkable! This is phenomenal, Richard Hawley is honestly in my opinion one of the most amazing songwriters around!

  • simplemente una gran canción enorme richard hawley

  • q buena cancion para glunos algo rara

pero el chiste es oirla con los ojos serrados y se se puede con un cigarrillo en al mano

    gran cancion

  • he sings this live even better quality

  • Thank you for this, my love.

The time you give me is the simplest, sweetest, most beautiful part of my day.

    I love you.

  • Just wonderful.

  • Que bueno este tío, condensa a Edwyn Collins, Leonard Cohen, Bernard Bultler, Sinatra, David Bowie y Scott Walker de forma magistral...

  • me siento raro escuchando esta cancion esta noche.

  • > Frank Sinatra

  • Comment removed

  • A very old-fashioned love song. Sounds like something Frank Sinatra may have sung.

  • Reminds me of leonard cohen for some reason, but beautiful all the same.

  • MESERIE TE HALESC

  • beautiful

  • where did this guy come from? thought provoking, beautiful music

  • He was in The Longpigs in the 90s. I heard him for the first time about four yrs ago. I'm a chef and I had the radio on in the kitchen. They played what I now know is 'Hotel Room' - I had to take my pan off the heat and just listen, desperately hoping they'd say who it was at the end. I think his music is stunning. Take a nap to 'By The Ocean' - amazing.

  • omg..what a song !!!

  • how is this video any more self indulgent than any other music video that shows a musician playing their music?

  • My life has become richer since I discovered Richards music. I can't imagine being without it every day. This is a masterpiece. Thankyou. xxx

  • Check out The Parish Music Box, most of his band play on our stuff..(he plays on one track) .I've met him a few times, the mans a gent...

  • just beautiful

  • I´m totally agree with RA0257.

All the music scene kneeling at his feet

  • A GREAT Voice! A GREAT Song! A GREAT Musician! All of him are GREAT albums!

I just bought all albums of Richard Hawley a few weeks ago and and he is one of the best Songwriters we have in these days!

Frank Sinatra would be pleased to work with him.

As a long time Nick Drake Fan and be the owner of the Blue Rose Record Label in Germany, I would love to have discovered this extraordinary artist.

Chapeau to the people who support him!

    Torsten of Blue Rose Records

  • Hey Torsten!

Thanks for all the good work you´ve done!

All the best, Yochanan (Owner of about 20 Blue Rose releases.)

  • I only discovered Richard Hawley this fall, when they reviewed Trueloves Gutter on the radio. The very next day I went to my trustworthy record dealer and orderd his entire back catalouge. This is the first time I done something like this since I discovered Dylan way back when in the 70ies. What can I say? The world seems to be a slightly better place since I know Hawley´s Music.

  • The album is a classic.

If you don't like it, you will.

  • Just another fantastic song. But then if you've followed Richard Hawleys career since the days of Treebound Story you'd know the guy has an unassuming everyday magic about him. I sometimes wish I were a quarter as talented, but that's never gonna happen ;)

I really look forward to every new song and it reminds me of being 15 all over again.

  • Simply fantastic, was great live too at the Sage Newcastle.

  • That was a great night

  • Oh my word... I'm a 21 year old bloke and I'm quite serious to boot, but this has brought tears to my eyes :S

    Pain of reminiscing?

  • It´s just that Richard Hawley has this gift, no need to worry;-

  • Tak til brødrene på P4 for at have vist mine ører Richard Hawley - tak.

For fanden ! han bliver bedre og bedre. Hvorfor er min radio overplastret med Lady Ga Ga og Robbie og ikke Hawley ??

  • Could someone put up Hawley's version of Young&Beutiful? It's so good.

  • Comment removed

  • I think this song holds it's own - nice structure and a great voice. As a newcomer I can appreciate his voice without all the other stuff people ad to it. This guy has passion and sincerity, you can just tell.

  • What the hell does that matter. He is a talented bloke does he not deserve the chance of success ......oh no your right he should have said no way!!!! "what £500k to use my tune nope not for me". I suppose you would have done the same and told them to go away....jeeeze some people

  • Sublime.

  • Fantastic song . . . . he really is a national treasure!

  • Simply beautiful.

  • I wish I was in Bexhill tonight

  • hawley's going back to obscurity with this one... sorry but this is nowhere as good as his previous stuff. contrived pastiche, and lame to boot!

  • BLIMEY! ... Hawley only goes and does it again, i didn't think it could get any better than 'Serious' ... I salute you sir. Amazing 5/5

  • I'd never heard of Richard until a couple of weeks ago when I heard this on Radio WM on a Saturday morning.I was at work on my own and just sat and cried to the song.A couple of songs have done that to me over the years but is simplicticaly beautiful. Best song i've heard for a very long time.

  • If there has been a better song released this year then I haven't heard it.

Gorgeous understated melody and lyrics that manage the neat trick of being both humerous and profound at the same time.

One treasure and the springboard to elavate Hawley to household name status.

  • Top comment - couldn't agree more. What I particularly like about this track is that it has an air of 'Cole's Corner' to it - I love all of Richard'a albums but Cole's Corner is my favourite. Absolutely fantastic - can't wait to buy the album. (I really miss my local Woolworths store for buying new releases!)

  • Sublime!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Lets get one thing clear, This is high class quality music, unlike most of todays artists just talking over old tracks and getting to to the top of the charts, Richard is a gifted ARTIST and his albums will be around forever, Even if this isnt music of your taste you cant say its nothing but spectcular. Before hearing of Richard Hawley I had given up on new music totally as its mostly all garbage or just speded up versions of old tracks.

  • this guy is very romantic!!!

  • You don't have to like all of an artist's music. During the recording of this album Richard made it very clear it was not going to be the same as Coles Corner, Lowedges etc. and that he did feel some fans would not like it.

That is exactly what has happened, mixed comments from all sides.

By the way the album HAS had some good reviews, they are not all negative.

  • its a grower, and hes trying different stuff with the instruments used etc.., dont be put of rich! people who can, do. and people who cant, critiicise

  • I was dissapointed on first hearing of this album, then I realised this song is fantastic, now I realise Dawn breaks is fantastic too. I have a feeling this is a real grower. Give it a few listens and it starts to catch you big time

  • the album is a deep masterpiece, it just takes more time to be fully appreciated,it's stunning

  • I haven't heard the new record yet but if this song is indicative of it then I don't see a problem. Late Night Final is probably my fave and I do agree that he's moved away from some of that but I still support the man. If only YouTube and Pitchfork were around to tear Sinatra's balls off back in the day. Vive l'internet!

  • have to say, i'm disappointed too. this is no lowedges or cole's corner, more "richard the crooner" from sheffield singing about the same old, same old.

    missed opportunity.

  • I am so moved by this, not just the song but the very beautiful video also. I have to admit not being knowledgeable about Richards work but after hearing this track on Radcliffe and Maconie last night I had to track it down. This is the real music that I love finding.

  • This is album is BRILLIANT. BEAUTIFUL. EPIC. and VERY VERY Refreshing. HARDLY the "formulaic rubbish" as commented by a previous poster. In today's vast ocean of music this album stands out as a BEACON to light the way for those who feel that music has LOST it's way. It very much reminds me of the first three Scott Walker albums, in the sense of how they were placed in the musical landscape of the time. I haven't been this blown away by an album since The Clientele's Suburban Light.

  • I don't know about the rest of the album, but this song is honest and beautiful.

  • What a disappointment. Richard's early work, and up to Cole's Corner, has been some of my favourite music EVER. After the huge disappointment of Lady's Bridge I was really looking forward to a return to form, especially since I heard he had abandoned some of the pastiche boring daftness of the last album. Well, he hasn't. Truelove's Gutter is more of the same, and it's with pain in my heart that I have to admit to myself that I... hate...it.

Oh Richard, when will your loveliness return?

  • have to agree, the bride. this is such formulaic rubbish, mr hawley seems to have lost his way.

and the rest of the album is even worse, yesterday i rushed to the shop to buy it, cherished it all day, put it on last night, and ---- i fell asleep while listening.

  • dude, i don't give a hoot about being outnumbered here. 30 comments is hardly synonym of success, is it? people are voting with their feet and staying away, because let's face it, this new album is a stinker.

read the reviews. even the guardian said "it's hard to escape a niggling feeling that Hawley is here polishing a formula, even falling back on cliche, in his contrived quest to make the local and homely sound lushly romantic"

wake up and smell the coffee

  • ...well then, the guardian says its pish...fair enough, that saves us from listening to the album and forming an objective opinion...anyway here is my quote pasted in to make me feel clever "Our sweetest songs are those that tell of saddest thoughts " Shelly.

  • "Our sweetest songs are those that tell of saddest thoughts "

couldn't agree more. look, i'm here listening to 'on the ledge' nearly crying my eyes out, and THAT sums up your quote perfectly. i love richard, i really do, would i be posting here for the third time in 2 days otherwise? i just can't help feeling a huge sense of let down by the new album. which saddens me more than you will ever know.

but i have to be honest - i don't like 'truelove's gutter'. i don't know what went wrong!

  • ....maybe Trueloves Gutter is a grower Monsieurparamour..if not Im sure Richard will sort you out with his next offering.Enjoy your evening.

  • I must say, that Richard's new album "Truelove's Gutter" is such a beautiful and breathtaking album, it's so calm and dark. Richard still has it, there is noe doubt there. Truelove's Gutter is one of Richard's best albums(but of course that's just my opinion)

  • who shot this?

  • this might be one of the best songs I've heard in years.

  • Hears a toast to you eilane...to all the cinema's we ran in from the rain...laughing clutching soaking newspaper's to you face.....WHAT A LYRIC...so poetic....just picture that...

  • Fantastic song,very moving.

  • i'm so looking forward to the album, i'll be buying the album first ting on monday,. by the way, love this song, very nice singel choice

  • Lovely. Nicely paced video too.

  • wish you a lovely birthday at sheperds bush!!

    and all the best**

  • yesss! was neues ... toll...love it

  • can't wait to see him in sheperds bush on my birthday. best present ever?

  • wouldn't "mend your tattered dress" have flowed better?

Great song. Will be buying the CD Tuesday.

  • magnifique

  • I am desperate for next Tuesday...and I am so excited that the album is also on vinyl.......and hopefully seeing him at Bexhill on 9th October. I adore Richard Hawley....and wish I had been born in Sheffield!

  • me to

  • Well i know what ill be doing on the 22nd of september...for now ill count the days...

  • can't wait to see you back in france.

i booked the Manchester and York gigs.

  • Comment removed

  • brill as usual

  • anyone who ever heard this guy`s beautiful songs is a lucky person.. He is so sensitive and so filled up with romance..

  • Great song, shitty video

  • just beautiful!!

  • Perfection as usual. In the day and age of popped out crap from the major labels, we can always count on Richard for the finest music.

  • Deserves to be in the charts for sure.

Heard him talking about Sheffield and his new album on the BBC radio show on Wed 09 -09 -09.

As the Dawn Breaks is also quite beautiful

  • This is a great song,,

    and it's message is beautiful.
