Original: Weapon used in the 16th and 17th centuries. "Weapon having a blade with lateral projections mounted on the end of a long shaft."
Recent: Freedom fighter. "A member of an organized body of fighters who attack or harass an enemy, especially within occupied territory; a guerrilla." Examples would be the partisans of occupied Europe who fought against fascism during WW2.
Modern: A terrorist. Anyone who does not comply with the occupation of their own country by modern fascism.
When I listen to this song, I think that our elders that we are free today ... it tears m'arrachent chills. I believe that i was never well described that time in so few words,
We all were brothers and sisters despite we were born in Croatia, Bosnia or Serbia, all the politicians divided us and made us fight, it´s so sad. I was born in the former Yugoslavia, in Croatia, but i´m living in Colombia since 1978, no matter where people are born, the main thing is what they have in their harts and minds.

Les Allemands etaient chez moi, (The Germans were at my home)
ils me dirent, "Resigne toi," (They said, "Resign yourself [to your fate],")
mais je n'ai pas peur; (But I am not afraid)
j'ai repris mon ame. (I have retaken my soul)
No? The Internets say:
"Cette chanson est en effet une adaptation de la "COMPLAINTE DU PARTISAN", écrite à Londres en 1943 par Emmanuel d'Astier de la Vigerie (surnommé "Bernard" dans l'armée des ombres")"
@EZrasfadia Are you for real? This is no movie. These are life photo's from "real" victims off atrocities by the nazi's. The pictures were taken by nazi's for what ever reasons. (maybe they were proud of themselves?)

@EZrasfadia oh, sorry, I missunderstood, my appologies. I wouldnot know if there is a movie where this song is played in. It was an hommage to Anna Marly, who wrote the song "Le chant de Partisans" in 1943 in Paris. Maybe your answer is to be found on the IMBD pages?
@DirkjeA Thank you for the advice, but even IMDB didn't have it. After looking through the wikipedia pages of too many prison movies, I finally found it to be in "The Escapist".

@emilija74 I believe the song is in reference to the french resistance against German occupation, considering half the song is in French and the lyrics "I have all of France".
'Partisan' is a term for any supporter of a particular cause. This song is about French partisans under the Nazi occupation of France. The fact you didn't pick up on this, given the French verses, is remarkable. It is you who have demonstrated ignorance, and not Mr. Cohen.
@Kingsmanly i disagree with you...."Partisan' is a term for any supporter of a particular cause.", why can't this song have universal meaning/understanding? Is there any reason that it can't? Is it just because it is in french, is it as you say about the french resistance, is that why? I am just curious, and frankly i think it is you that is ignorant for not understanding the Global meaning of this song. Well tha'ts my opinion, more than happy to debate it with you my friend.
i wish these men could show their faces in IRELAND!! We are being raped, have been raped and will continue to be raped by our "government" and the fucking IMF. IRISH MEN STAND UP AND FIGHT!!!!!!!
@mahm2404 I don't give a shit either PUTO CABRON since the entire world knows that YOU NAZIS were the worst of the worst that world history ever produced!
@mahm2404 Lose the caps man, looks like you are shouting and that is for people who don't believe in their own statements.Further more, stating these clichés seems silly comming from someone living in a country that conveniently kept itself out of wars, only made a lot of money on them (they had to be forced to give it back to the rightful owners or descendents)and did sent thousants at their borders back into hell. In that hell Partizans were fighting facism and nazism. They were the real heroes
Bosnians is last partisans in Europa who is fight againts Cetniks ( a bad guys who is took Hitler side during WWII) 1941-1945 AND Cetniks again try to do same thing in Bosnia 1992-1995 caz Cetniks come on scene after 50 years after WWII after USA beat fasizam .
And yes we will be ready forever to defeat fasiam and cetniks and all others who like fasizam in Bosnia. Remeber we will defeat you guys.
@ncmanja And remeber in bosnia living bosnian people serbians living in serbia and croats living in croatia your propaganda is a same propaganda CETNIKS use in WWII to kill all inecent bosnian people and same propaganda do the same staf during aggression from serbia and croatia 1992-1995 killing the people just because have different name make a Genocide that is clear fasizam that's way USA come cross the ocean to stop fasizam AGAIN and save europa ass
@fakatba My propaganda? You were the one who started the propaganda here! I've just noticed your hypocrisy and pointed it out - you tried to use the achievements of other nation in your favor and make the image of some brave nation always jeopardized by evil Serbs from Bosnia and Serbia and Croats from Bosnia and Croatia. Fortunately, not many people are ready to buy that story any more. Anyway you can believe in whatever you want, I can't help you about that.
@ncmanja in bosnia we don't have favore nations everyone is bosnians, your last post on this subject just confirmed my theory about you , you still dividing people from bosnia i didn't do that in any off my post my hypocrisy LOL in that case we have hypocrisy off Hauge court caz that court clearly identified poeple and state who is support Genocide 1992-1995 during aggression over Bosnia and everyone is know thanks God for Hauge court that is Serbia and war criminals Ratko Mladic and Karadzic
@fakatba Good to her you don't divide people in Bosnia, because I've traveled all around the world but haven't seen a country as much divided as BiH. Hopefully one day Muslims, Croats and Serbs in Bosnia will overcome hatred accumulated during past decades. To do so, it's preferably not to lie, and your last lie is that the Hague court had confirmed that Serbia had supported the genocide? The verdict says "Serbia has not committed genocide nor conspired to or incited the commission of genocide"
@fakatba We all were brothers and sisters despite we were born in Croatia, Bosnia or Serbia, all the politicians divided us and made us fight, it´s so sad. I was born in the former Yugoslavia, in Croatia, but i´m living in Colombia since 1978, no matter where people are born, the main thing is what they have in their harts and minds.
@666animaenpena I spent many weeks on a Trade Union convoy taking aid to Tuzla during the war. Tuzla was a beacon of enlightenment during those dark days where ethnic Bosnians, Serbs and Croats lived in harmony and worked together against fascism. Even in death they shared a cemetery unlike other areas of ex-Yugoslavia. I saw some dreadful sights but the way the people in Tuzla stuck together was inspirational. Down with fascism!
va@ Thanks for sharing your experience, it encourage me to still on the struggle; despite I’m 37, I think a lot of people of the new generations forgot their history and the struggles for freedom carried out in their countries. Now the fascism rules in some more refined ways, oblivion, consumerism, excessive individualism, nationalism, xenophobia, control of media and information, the control of the minds. All these are the tools of the new fascist domination of the world.
@vaughan2704 That is an impressive story and gives courage to my heart just to know there are still people that know that in the end we are all brothers and sisters under the skin.
@polmaccaba01 I do not understand your question. what is the relationship between learning portugese and yugoslavia or with my life? I suffered for the war in theBalkans, some of my relatives died there, my grandpa fought at WW2 my uncles and cousins fought the balkan war, my grandma had to hide in a basement for months while her city was bombed in a war fueled by U.S government (among others). War is the saddest thing that can happen to any country.
@666animaenpena : I think that is shite...and i think u know it!!! You did not see what happened to your Crothia....yes thats my spelling, what do u think u will accomplish? Besides making the UEFA have to choose 2nd place teams...float off into a good land.
@polmaccaba01 Yugoslavia were a beatiful land, too much good people died there, i lived in two countries devastated by war and a know something about the effects. So please do not insult. And I want to ask you again: Please explain to me your cuestion, what dou you ment when you asked: "did u learn portugese?"
Answer to me: what is the relationship between learning portugese and yugoslavia or with my life?
@666animaenpena I am from Croatia, but I was born in 1990. just before the Croatin War for Independence and since then there are few between Croatians, Serbians and Slovenians who would call themselves brother and sisters. It's not only the politicians we should blame, it's the people who just can't get over the past which was devestating. The hate between us is being transfered from generation to generation and as it seemes it's never going to fade. People rather hate then forgive.
@IvaJasko I agree with you, the hatred is passed form generation to generation, it is so sad... But i had and have good friends from Serbia, Montenegro, Bosnia, Slovenia and of course Croatia, I consider them as my brothers and sisters, not everybody likes to hate, but you are right they are a few. Most of the people are sheeps dominated by hatred and by politicians (From USA, Germany, and ex JU) who stimulate it.
@666animaenpena In which way do German or American politicians stimulate the Kosovo conflict in your opinion? Both countries invest considerable financial effort into the prevention of conflicts through NATO forces. Do you seriously consider the KFOR a stimulator of conflict?
@OnHerDemand You can goolge: "GERMAN AND US INVOLVEMENT IN THE BALKANS: A CAREFUL COINCIDENCE OF NATIONAL POLICIES?" By T.W. Carr. Associate Publisher, Defense & Foreign Affairs Publications. London.
Or "Balkan tragedy: chaos and dissolution after the Cold War By Susan L. Woodward, Brookings Institution" among others... here is no space for write all the history of the intervention of both nation in fueling the war.
@nemosvjerovat: First photo is the executing of a 26 year old Stjepan Filipović, who was the commander of a Partisans' unit in Serbia. He was captured on 24 February 1942 by Germans forces and subsequently hanged in Valjevo on 22 May 1942. So, this picture has nothing to do with Bosnia.
@fakatba: As a matter of fact, the brave Bosnian people, fighting against fascism in WWII were mostly Bosnian Serbs. Majority of Bosnian Muslims and Croats were fighting for Nazi Germany's puppet state NDH.
@ncmanja first off all when i say bosnian brave people I mean everyone no matter if is (serbian, bosnikas or croats ) but speaking on your way don't forget to mention about chetniks ( majority of serbians - regarding your speach who took a nazzi side during WWII) so when u make comment don't forget also to mention CETNIKS ;) so dont mix partisans with cetniks, ustasa and handzar division ok? So your dirty propaganda about bosnian brave people will be stoped right here.
that is true nemsvjerovat, bosnian brave people, so many times we defend our freedom without helping from outside just like 1992 and yes europa is just watch that fight for freedom never help us even today.
It is curious how people consider French resistance a symbol of European fight with German occupant . It was neither the biggest community nor the most effective one. I'm not saying that its members didn't achieve anything or that France didn't suffer during the war (though for a country with one of the biggest army that time they sure could put up a bigger fight) but French resistance pales in comparison with other underground organizations in Europe .
DON'T FORGET EX YUGOSLAVIA PEOPLE MAKE A FIRST FREE TERITORY IN EUROPA DURING WWII AND YEAH OFF COURSE A GUY WHO IS TALKING ABOUT FRENCH RESISTANCE DON'T FORGET A PEOPLE WHO IS ACCTUALY MAKE THAT RESISTANCE COMING FROM EX YUGOSLAVIA - BOSNIA AND HERZEGOVINA. THAT IS FACT. FACT IS ALSO USA COME TO SAVE EUROPA ASS DURING WWII. GOD BLESS USA AND BOSNIA!!!
@killerbee570 - hahahaha , French what ? a few soldiers in London, one of them is called the general, while the entire nation extends his hands waiting for the Germans, and legs. so many French people and so few German soldiers. France has happily accepted her role. even from back .
You Americans are so dammed ignorant and superficial. The French Resistance were civilians fighting for their country while you fat, lazy civilian Americans drank beer and ate burgers.
No partisan unit was truly effective as a fighting force on its own. Not the French, not the Russians, not any. They could not much since they were overwhelmed by an enemy who was superior to them in both numbers and equipment. They were outgunned and outnumbered, just like the Palestinians, the Afghani, the Iraqis. They could only wear the enemy out and hope for succor in the form of other armies. Only the Yugoslavs were the most effective because of the Bosnian mountains.
I think this is song more metaphorical than people give it credit for. Plus the French Resistance, which for some reason everyone seems to think this song is about, is largely a myth.
The French were a junior partner in the Axis alliance, fired on American troops in Algeria for days during Operation Torch and had a higher birth rate during the Nazi Occupation than they had in the preceeding decades, because they were paid to have more kids by Germany.
@dropway9 the lyrics of this song were written by emmanuel d'astier, one of the leaders of the resistance (translated to english by hy zaret). 'the french' is not a unified body. it's true that many collaborated, and this is what makes those who resisted so heroic.
@dropway9 This a FRENCH song (partly transleted in English) about the FRENCH resistance. It was written in 1943 by La Vigerie (La Complainte du partisan). Like it or not, that the facts...
My grandfather was a Partisan in Albania during WWII. He fought from 39-44... he began the war as a boy and when it was over he was a full-fledged man. This song makes me think of him...
What a terrible war, captured in a beautiful song. I first heard one of Leanords songs in a beach bar in calvi called 'Le Plein Soleil' when I was in the Legion in 86' and recently found Leonard on you tube. Great Musician.

@neshereagle No...Death to Nazism ...Fascists and Nazis should not be confused...do some research into the benefits that fascisim had to Italian society in the 1920's and 1930's ..I despise the actions of the anti Christ Hitler but the policies of Mussolini served to ressucitate an Italy that was its knees following WWI it just so happened he picked the wrong side in WWII which lead to the destruction of his name and of Fascism..
@kikibooooo Hitler wasn't just a villan because he was violent, if his insanity didn't cause the Nazi party to massacre millions of people his fascist ideals would have. Mankind advances for a reason, I'm not going to debate the pros and cons of political theories in a youtube comment, just wanted to point out that anyone who seriously thinks that a rejection of industrialization and a return to an agriculture based economy is a 'good idea' is an idiot, plain and simple.
@kikibooooo Go back to school, mate! Nazism is just a form of fascism, just like Maoism is a form of communism. Mussolini only benefited the rich industrials, his entourage and the clergy (like Franco in Spain), while savagely torturing and persecuting their opponents, introducing forced labour and brutally invading small countries. By the way, Hitler was not an anti-christ. He was a devoted catholic and a deeply religious person.
NEVER AGAIN.
Long live the courage of Partisans That stand by Morals!

Remeber we will defeat you guys.
fakatba 5 months ago
@ncmanja And remeber in bosnia living bosnian people serbians living in serbia and croats living in croatia your propaganda is a same propaganda CETNIKS use in WWII to kill all inecent bosnian people and same propaganda do the same staf during aggression from serbia and croatia 1992-1995 killing the people just because have different name make a Genocide that is clear fasizam that's way USA come cross the ocean to stop fasizam AGAIN and save europa ass
fakatba 5 months ago
@fakatba My propaganda? You were the one who started the propaganda here! I've just noticed your hypocrisy and pointed it out - you tried to use the achievements of other nation in your favor and make the image of some brave nation always jeopardized by evil Serbs from Bosnia and Serbia and Croats from Bosnia and Croatia. Fortunately, not many people are ready to buy that story any more. Anyway you can believe in whatever you want, I can't help you about that.
ncmanja 5 months ago
@ncmanja in bosnia we don't have favore nations everyone is bosnians, your last post on this subject just confirmed my theory about you , you still dividing people from bosnia i didn't do that in any off my post my hypocrisy LOL in that case we have hypocrisy off Hauge court caz that court clearly identified poeple and state who is support Genocide 1992-1995 during aggression over Bosnia and everyone is know thanks God for Hauge court that is Serbia and war criminals Ratko Mladic and Karadzic
fakatba 5 months ago
@fakatba Good to her you don't divide people in Bosnia, because I've traveled all around the world but haven't seen a country as much divided as BiH. Hopefully one day Muslims, Croats and Serbs in Bosnia will overcome hatred accumulated during past decades. To do so, it's preferably not to lie, and your last lie is that the Hague court had confirmed that Serbia had supported the genocide? The verdict says "Serbia has not committed genocide nor conspired to or incited the commission of genocide"
ncmanja 5 months ago
@fakatba We all were brothers and sisters despite we were born in Croatia, Bosnia or Serbia, all the politicians divided us and made us fight, it´s so sad. I was born in the former Yugoslavia, in Croatia, but i´m living in Colombia since 1978, no matter where people are born, the main thing is what they have in their harts and minds.
Down the facism.
Peace.

Down with fascism!
vaughan2704 4 months ago 4
va@ Thanks for sharing your experience, it encourage me to still on the struggle; despite I’m 37, I think a lot of people of the new generations forgot their history and the struggles for freedom carried out in their countries. Now the fascism rules in some more refined ways, oblivion, consumerism, excessive individualism, nationalism, xenophobia, control of media and information, the control of the minds. All these are the tools of the new fascist domination of the world.
Long live to freedom
666animaenpena 4 months ago
@vaughan2704 That is an impressive story and gives courage to my heart just to know there are still people that know that in the end we are all brothers and sisters under the skin.

@polmaccaba01 I do not understand your question. what is the relationship between learning portugese and yugoslavia or with my life? I suffered for the war in theBalkans, some of my relatives died there, my grandpa fought at WW2 my uncles and cousins fought the balkan war, my grandma had to hide in a basement for months while her city was bombed in a war fueled by U.S government (among others).
IvaJasko 1 month ago
@IvaJasko I agree with you, the hatred is passed form generation to generation, it is so sad... But i had and have good friends from Serbia, Montenegro, Bosnia, Slovenia and of course Croatia, I consider them as my brothers and sisters, not everybody likes to hate, but you are right they are a few. Most of the people are sheeps dominated by hatred and by politicians (From USA, Germany, and ex JU) who stimulate it.

After all here in the United States people sometimes votes for the Democrats
and the next year vote for the Republicans or vice, but do not kill each other
because of their different ideas.
It broke my heart to see those pictures. May they rest in peace all the people who died violently no matter what they believed in..

It is curious how people consider French resistance a symbol of European fight with German occupant . It was neither the biggest community nor the most effective one. I'm not saying that its members didn't achieve anything or that France didn't suffer during the war (though for a country with one of the biggest army that time they sure could put up a bigger fight) but French resistance pales in comparison with other underground organizations in Europe .

Don't take this song the wrong way.

"I think this is song more metaphorical than people give it credit for."
=> And that Leonard Cohen does himself, obviously.
+++
"Plus the French Resistance, which for some reason everyone seems to think this song is about, is largely a myth."
=> A well-designed myth, then.
+++
"The French were a junior partner in the Axis alliance"
=> This sentence is just idiotic. I won't bother to comment it. read some books.

@dropway9 the lyrics of this song were written by emmanuel d'astier, one of the leaders of the resistance (translated to english by hy zaret). 'the french' is not a unified body. it's true that many collaborated, and this is what makes those who resisted so heroic.

3GBlog 4 months ago 2
@kikibooooo Go back to school, mate! Nazism is just a form of fascism, just like Maoism is a form of communism. Mussolini only benefited the rich industrials, his entourage and the clergy (like Franco in Spain), while savagely torturing and persecuting their opponents, introducing forced labour and brutally invading small countries. By the way, Hitler was not an anti-christ. He was a devoted catholic and a deeply religious person.
