What most people don't realize is that Shane makes Kobe work without letting him get to the line. He sends kobe to the line only about half as much as other defenders. Shane played against him for 7 games and the number of fouls he had against Kobe was surpassed in 2 games when it was Melo trying to defend him the next series. Obviously Melo isn't an elite defender but it's an example that happened basically back to back.

Kobe is faster, but really you have to be extremely fast and a good slasher to shrug off defense. Kobe was kind of like that when he was younger, but he developed into more of a shooter and takes contested shots regularly. So I guess, to answer your question, Kobe looks to shoot past Battier instead of shrugging him off usually.
