  • Manhunt 2 for the wii received the AO rating because the use of household objects to murder "innocent humans" necessitated that the actions be mimicked using the wii remote.

  • these early video were hallarious

  • The witcher 2 has done it right.

  • I busted out laughing at "Look! I'm drawing PICTURES! :D"

  • So out of curiosity, where can I go to see the videos you used to have up on the Escapist?

  • @magmos they will be on PATV soon, right now there's only the new episode about pacing

  • Catherine.

  • @MonMalthias Notice how the upload date is May 2008...

  • was that daCosta at 8:52?

  • @jordanimations Yep, he was teaching the class I made the video for. Awesome professor. :)

  • What is the game title at 7:02?

  • @peter77107 Ico. It's by the developer Team Ico who also made Shadow of the Colossus and the upcoming game The Last Guardian (i think that's the name)

  • One word: Catherine

  • @Adwinela yeah..., but this video is from 2008...

  • Atlus's new game 'Catherine' seems to do it pretty well.

  • How come you didn't talk about sims? sims has definitely been a milestone in the depiction of sex and relationships in videogames

  • Witcher 2 does this well, the sex is relevant and important to the relationships.

  • Wow youtube just put the video has been aged restricted just because it has the word sex in the title

  • this would be more enjoyable to watch without that fucking annoying voice.

  • lol good finish

  • @gzuss090909 seriously. impressive finish.

  • I enjoyed Your video

  • You were right the first time: "Day-GAH"

  • This hurted my feelings

  • Wait most of the video games mentioned here look like even worse preteen sex fantasies. oO with the 99% by accident comment well then really my chances of having sex would go up exponentially with every viable female I meet because currently... The numbers are approaching zero. Oo

  • You're righ! We need a new media that everything bad in the world can be blamed on so we can play our games in peace.

  • controversy pot ftw

  • What are you saying? Mass Effect DID have "the most realistic sex acts ever conceived". It was embarassing, somewhat silly, you kind of stumbled into it by accident and 99% of it was too dark to see.

That sounds like real-life sex to me!

  • Again Epic.

  • If dnf will be released everywhere , then we are free to release sex featuring sex

  • Yes. I agreed with most of this, comrade.

  • You should play Leisure Suit Larry 6 and 7.

  • Waaaaiit, wasn't this on The Escapist? I remember seeing this...

  • @rachetandclank223 A retooled version of this very same episode was on the Escapist. This show can now be found there on Thursdays, actually.

  • This got flagged? just because it had the word "sex" in the title? wtf, youtube?

  • I think the "let's not let them off so easy" is stupid. Then again, I also recognize that it's the main language that people know, and so learning a different language is going to take time.

  • i love the companion cube

  • ~Like for Kingdom Hearts!~

  • They can portray sex in a positive way. Take God of War, for instance.

  • one thing im curious about is if the media gets mad at the slightest bit of sexuality in video games why is it that i havent heard the media whine about fallout new vegas where you can get FISTED, by a ROBOT.

  • dude the thing i love about ur video is that u dont just adress the problem u tell us how we can fix it

  • Man, 8:33 to 8:50 is really great! I know I'd want to do the right thing, but man it'd be sweet to enact revenge to our oppressors through the fun of a new generation. Man, I'm torn between the right thing, and getting somehow even. I know everybody else just might find the right thing a little too hard to do. Nobody learns!

  • wow I had to laugh when I heard how the news reacted to mass effect. I mean, really. REALLY O.-??? was that "sex scene" that bad. it was more like a dry-hump scene if you ask me :P but no i didn't know about this before it went on the news so of course i had to check it out... was a little disappointed XP

  • I wish most Americans were more open to mature conversations about sex (like me).

I couldn't help but notice that you mention James Portnow a couple of times in this video, and now he works with you directly in Extra Credits. When did you two meet?

  • your videos are fantastic, i love the style and content. what did you use to put the presentations together? i take it from your first video that you didn't use powerpoint...i'd love to know how it was all made.

  • Truly, just love these guys! Wish more game devlopers were like this. Shame they don't get noticed that much.

  • Who's retarded idea was to flag this? It's a tragedy, because this lecture is one of the rare mature-content vids people SHOULD unwittingly stumble into. I swear, youtube (and the US in general) has got to get its priorities straight.

  • around 8:42, you start to sound like Yakko

  • i just dont believe that sex belongs in video games...or in movies for that matter

  • future headline: holodeck banned for any audiences under 17

  • The media took the mass effect sex scenes waaaaaaaayyy too far

  • I liked this..but im really not sure what side id be on..Part of me is weirded out and uncomfortable by sex and nudity in video games and movies when it involves my boyfriend seeing or playing it..but another part of me WANTS to be ok with it...But im not sure how to be...Ive tried researching and trying to find a blog i can join but no luck..Some guys are immature and only the a game or movie because it has sexual content or nudity in it, and other guys couldnt care less..

  • @paintedangel88 Seems you're more concerned about whether you're boyfriend's a perv than what's going on with general culture. =P That's okay. For you I suggest just talking with your bf about the sex parts in games, and how he feels about it. If he sounds shallow/immature, call him out on it.

If you want to steer him to better views on sex, just find some erotic literature/films you appreciate and share them.

  • Really good "lecture" man.

  • Full nudity in Mass Effect? They got to be kidding me! I played the game and that is far from it.

  • It prints money!!!!

  • my teacher showed us one of your videos in class hahahhahaha

  • aha i personally think sex(the actual act) doesn't do craap for a story. but of course people put it in because it makes it more relatable to people(i guess). but in all honesty, sex scenes are almost always awkward. in movies, too. -.-

  • jrj4u.com

  • loved the presentation!!! keep up the good work :)

  • I just noticed you have a video series on Escapist.com. This presentation came to mind and it still hits home just as much now as it did then.

OOO and TilDuDor is right. Go play Persona 4. I finished 3 and I'm allllmost done 4. It's GOOD! :D

    Keep you the good work!

  • I wish you would have done this without the annoying voice mod

  • no shit

  • Dude, you were in SCAD?! I just got there in January, and I'm also majoring in animation! I found your videos on The Escapist and was glad to find you have even more on YouTube. These are very smart videos and it's obvious you have a very good grasp of how the gaming industry works. As a guy who has an unbreakable passion for gaming, I really enjoy watching them. Wish you luck with The Escapist!

  • have you seen the Game Overthinker's vids on this?

  • IT'S THE COMPAION CUBE!!!!!! <3

  • I had to make an account with +18 to view the video. Couse i'm 14 but i guess it doesn't matter. Couse who flagged it definetely didn't have any reason for that.

  • I bet your history was like: Did i search that?! DAAAAMMMNNN XD

  • got an A on this as well?

  • God who ever flagged this is a moron

Did they watch it or did they just assume it was porn?

  • any one here with herpes? Let's be friend at STDRomance site

  • I hate the legislating of what games can and can't have :|

  • Tenkage Here from The Escapist, thats right, I tracked you down to Youtube, I guess your story is like Yahtzee's LOL. Seriously you are awesome, from Youtube to Escaptist,, can't wait to see more of your great videos ^_^

  • Very nice except for the end man. I have already seen enough 'controversy' to last me a lifetime. I say it is time to take the high road and give the next generation hobby a break. After all if we had been given that our medium would be a lot richer and more satisfying then it is today. Plus I hate censorship of all kinds and would rather interact with my kids to explain it all to them then have someone else step in and say what they are watching and seeing is 'wrong'.

  • Hi Daniel

I first caught you over at the Escapist and have since devoured your Youtube content. Great stuff! I look forward to more.

Yeah, the flagging's a pain. Leaving aside the signing in, (I joined the community for this vid) there's also the whole 'birds of a feather' problem. If I believe Youtube, then if I like this vid I must also be someone who enjoys hentai, wii sex, steamy scenes ripped from TV shows, and so on. Yeah, right.

Maybe reshoot this for the Escapist?

  • An intelligent discussion on Sex in Video Games is flagged for no apparent reason? Seems that whoever flagged this video just read the title and had a Mass Effect Fox News reaction.

  • wait who the fuck was the jerkoff who flagged this video >:(

  • I think video games just need time to be accepted into society. Like you said, it's still a very young art, only about 40 years, and other respected media such as films have already been around for nearly a hundred years or so (don't have any facts backing this up, but I'm going with what I vaguely remember in history) and I'm sure they all had their fair share (OMG TRIPLE RHYME) of controversary. But as more generations are exposed to video games, they'll gradually become accepted.

  • Alot of Americans or should I say the Majority are afraid of sex .Yes sex does sell, but only because too many people treat it like a taboo.I mean the younger generation loves anything that pisses off the older generation. It also amazes me that i can watch any TV program or play any videogame with ultra violence and a small amount of people may bitch about it,but if you show a glimpse of Female Breasts than it's like OMG!!! you just completly destroyed the very fabric of human existence.

  • @TheMajorPayn yes because apparently the secondary sexual characteristics of the female of our species is a weapon of mass destruction. Wonder why GW never went looking for those?

  • I love your videos!

It's worth noting that there's a game called Persona 4, a fantastic niche one for the PS2 that deals with really intriguing and relatable themes like isolation and alienation, social pressures, grief, and, most surprisingly, sexuality and gender identity. It was all very well interwoven and done in a way that wasn't at all gratuitous or exploitative, and that added so much to the experience for me. I hope to come across more games like that, and suggest you try it out.

  • @TilDuDor I definitely want to play it, but I still haven't managed to wrap up Persona 3 yet. Eventually!

  • @kirithem Just an FYI, Man Hunt was given an AO rating when it was sent to be rated, forcing Rockstar to censor the game. Later, when it was released on PC, people modded out the censorship and again later on Rockstar released it on PC uncensored with a mature rating.

  • @kirithem I love you guys.

  • @kirithem P3 and P4 have nothing to do with each other outside of some vague references and shoutouts. It's alright if you want to finishP 3 because you don't want to leave it incomplete, but if you're playing to bridge the storyline, there's no need.

  • @TilDuDor You're so right! This game was great. Oh and to Kirithem, P4 is a lot better then then 3 in my opinion. It's a lot less teenager angst writing and a lot more fun interaction with your party members without it loosing it's weird touch. (Yup there's a green penis riding a chariot, but you no longer shoot yourself to the head to summon personas. (Seriously, what was with that?))

  • @TilDuDor niche? where i live it was on #1 best selling games for ps2

  • @TilDuDor It also sounds and looks like Catherine (made by the Persona team at Atlus) will deal with sexuality and relationships in a mature way. In fact, as far as I can tell, that's what the whole game is about--a guy who's terrified of commitment, his girlfriend (Katherine), another girl (Catherine), and lots of psychological horror and symbolism.

I agree that the Persona series, and the Shin Megami Tensei series as a whole, is quite mature in a lot of ways.

  • "I dont see any reason to let them off easy"

  • I know it may sound like the other comments, but I just don't see how this is innapropriate. Seriously, though. It's discussing a mature topic. If you're not mature enough to watch it, then the title should be enough. God, some people...

  • Ahaha, what's with Americans and being afraid with tits?

  • @AzureKiru We are a country ruled by christian values. No ones perfect.

  • @yarzu But their being applied in haphazard and idiotic ways. I mean seriously we have murders, divorces, spousal abuse, child abuse, bullying and heck even the clergy, the CLERGY, are abusing sunday school kids! And last I checked very few to none of the aggressors are getting struck by lightning or dying in horribly creative acts of god. You can have the values of a saint but if you don't put them to practice you can still turn into a monster.

  • Wow. They let kids play Fallout 3, Which is known to me one of the most gory (and fun!) video games out there. Not to mention gears of War 1, 2, and soon to be 3. Where literal brain, guts , etc are exposed by brutal murder. Now we add some breasts to please some people and automatically the game is a horror to everyone and is antichris. What the fuck is wrong with these fucking parents? they get fucked everyway, but hwen kids are exposed to a little nudity or sexual content OMG BURN THEM ALIVE!

  • pretty smart and true. I like the research you did on this topic. I just hope that in the future you go somewhere where you can make these arguements more effective. Heck I can't get you there but if you go in to congress or something shoot I might consider you as the less corrupted canidate. Anyherm nice vid.

  • I really agree with Portnow. For example, the sex-scene in the first Terminator-movie was actually necessary to the plot, even though it was kind of cheesy.

  • Yeah, this probably shouldn't have been flagged.

I completely agree with this. Sex is a natural part of life and therefore should be introduced into games when it adds to the story or helps to develop the characters.

  • One of the main reasons the Mass Effect controversy pissed me off (along with the blatant lie) was that it was one of the better examples of a tasteful dose of sex in gaming.

It came with that developed relationship between the characters which is missing from many other games and mediums.

    Great presentation, I enjoy them.

  • @movieman1211 Exactly it was the culmination of a relationship, an expression of love and sexuality, and a tender moment before the maelstrom when their was a good chance both of you were going on a suicide mission! But no gamers are not adult enough for that, thanks fox news for hyping it up you liars!

  • @SweetGirlKayla im much hotter than u -- lol

  • Great lecture!

  • We're one of the most assbackwards nations in the world when it comes to "morality".. You can rip arms off and blood and guts abound, and that's "ok" even for children.. but sex, even the hint of it is out of line.. so I guess violence is honored but love and sexuality is something to be feared. WTF.. Same with homosexuality.. You just hint as someone having gay sex.. WHAM NC17.. but you can show tits and ass all day if it's straight and get an R rating.. Grow up people.. lol let love grow!

  • This is one of the greatest videos on youtube, bet some religious freak flagged it.

  • bring on the SEX!

  • the person who flagged this video is most likely one of those narrow minded people who simply cannot fathom the idea of sex without it being a mature situation. This video is simply a discussion of the artistic merits of having that sort of thing in video games. I for one agree with Daniel. This medium is never going to grow unless people are willing to accept that artistic mediums like video games must explore all aspects of real life, such as sex, war and other so-called controversial topics.

  • Right on! I couldnt agree more. And I saw that subtle Shinedown reference with the birds.

  • OMG, you have made this young college students life a little easier. I'm doing a group project for Cultural Anthropology and we are attempting to validate the Online Gaming community as a culture. I am covering the subjects of Gender Roles/Stratification and Sexualisation in Online Video Games, this video helped my perspective THANK YOU.

  • There was a time that Comic books or Graphic Novels to put it correctly, were treated the same way video games are treated today. Nowadays Graphic Novels are the 9th or 10th art if I am not mistaken. I believe that eventiually video games will achieve the same status.

  • Dude you really have a way with your words i watched all of your lectures and i love all of them, alot of the time i cant sit through these sot of things but these are just plain fascinating =] Good Job

  • Best video that delved into sex and videogames,

If we look at Japanese games like Yume Muri Kasuri that do have sex scenes as well as ones like Phantom of Inferno and Hourglass of Summer that don't have sex scenes but still contain the same romance that Yume Miru Kasuri does, like face it, the Japanese have been experts at this for over 20 years and I hope they don't yeld to western public pressure, or else we would have lost a great inspiration for us all.

  • @TBoneTony Of course, Japan's way of dealing with sexuality does have a darkside...

  • Great lecture. As with all of your videos!

  • Very impressive lecture, great job.

  • Mass Effect doesn't deserve to be lumped in with the rest of these. It was done tastefully and was anything but exploitave. Most importantly you could only reach it after upwards of 15 hours spent building a real relationship with your partner. It was done in exactly the way sex needs to be portrayed in games if they are to be taken seriously as an art form. The only reason it was ever portrayed in a negative light is thanks to Fox and Friends

  • @Zeb364 You are absolutely right if more games had this type of relationship portrayed instead of hyped and reported falsely about by a biased news network video games would be an art form that captured a tiny bit of the human experience.

  • Comment removed

  • i love kingdom hearts : )

  • lols lara had to pop up some where xD

  • I agree completely. Sex has to play a part in the story, not be there for its own sake. I think thats the reason people got pissed over Mass Effect; because the sex was really out of place and didnt actually play any meaningful part in the games narrative and was there for shock value. But despite all logic, Bioware is continuing this trend with Dragon Age. Making sex a meaningful part of the story isnt hard to do, I mean Xenogears did it and that was a PSone game. Makes ya think.

  • or heavy rain ;_;

  • @tet64 Nobody who actually played Mass Effect "got pissed" over the sex in it. I get the feeling you must not have played it either.

  • @jacobkosh First off, I own the game. Secondly, its called constructive criticism. Thirdly, did you actually read what I wrote or did the words People who got pissed at Mass Effect, just catch your eye and you ignored everything else?

  • 155555th viewer! :D:D

  • Unfortunately, most over reactions in other media about video games is a result of misinformation, which is often caused by lack of research. FOX News' "report" on sex in Mass Effect was appalling on how little they did to look into the topic, they showed most if not of all of some of those "sex scenes."

  • why was this flagged?

  • I still have no idea. I really wish there was a way to appeal it.

  • @kirithem ask JPizzle1122 the guy who makes the microwave show, his stuff gets unfairly flagged quite a bit and I think he's found a way to deal with it.

  • @kirithem Someone was just unwilling to listen to logic and freaked out whe you mention sex, video games, and people in the same sentence.

  • @Jman3ish Because in America any mention of sex gets flagged as 'inappropriate' but hey if you have violence it is aokay! Yeah I sense the immense irony too thanks baby boomers! I mean didn't that generation do some crazy stuff in their day?

  • I can't wait to see if Mass Effect 2 makes the "news" again on FNC. I'm fairly right-wing but I understand that games are an entertainment medium and for some it's an "R" rated medium at that and this 30something is fine with that... in fact, he's thankful for it. I think FNC got enough dirty mail that they didn't even bother to cover the Dragon Age sex scenes and it's likely ME2 wont even get mentioned this time as well.

  • @Yakko77 And yet the damage is done ME2 was restricted in its relationship depiction they cut any scenes of nudity or sex short to make it all implied and sanitized thanks Fox you guys are proving consistently to be a bunch of jerks.

  • @Fafnd I'm not sure why Bioware went all the way with bi-sexual relationships and showed a fair amount for a video game with Dragon Age (PG-13 at best) but went the PG route with ME2.even though ME1 was PG-13 at best as well. ME2 went fairly R rated with language and violence but completely toned down the sex. Hell, ME1 should've been rated T at best but somehow got a M rating. I'm not sure if it was due to FNC but regardless, it was lame to put it mildly to tone it down as much as they did.

  • @Yakko77 Agreed it just makes it seem like the folks putting these ratings on the game didn't play it at all but looked at the cover art and back side of the game box.

  • @Yakko77

I think it worked okay because Mass Effect 2's romances (at least 4 of them) were more about the relationship than the physical interactions. I'm mostly talking about the ones with Garrus, Tali, Thane, and Jack. All the way to the final scene, it dealt more with the trust and friendship which I think can be more mature than any ass shot.

  • @movieman1211 Good points but I think that's why ME1 was so careful to have that ass shot in the game for such a short amount of time so as not to make it the whole reason to play the game. It's a 3-50 hour space epic that just happens to have a sex scene between two lovers about to go on what may be a suicide mission at the end and wanting a little physical passion isn't such a bad thing, it's part of being human IMO.

  • @Yakko77

Good point. They both have good scenes, whether they're physical or not.

  • Glenn Beck should be locked in a room onto a chair with his eyes stapled open, and his hands tied, in front of this presentation on loop for four days straight.

  • I really agree with you, kirithem. Sex in videogames should be more about intimacy. I feel that in roleplaying games you can really get attached to the character that is supposed to be your partner but just blatant sex appeal and the showing flesh doesnt really mean anything. Im not saying any of us have to or should hide the fact that we all have some form of a sex drive, but subtlety is key in this sort of thing when it comes to story (I feel).

  • cant believe you didnt mention larry 1 ;)

again, good job, your work is very very well done and might educate many cooks of the controversy pot.

  • A thought experiment:

The Saboteur begins in a Burlesque club where Stripteases go on. At least 4 are viewable. I have heard no controversy over this.

In addition to treating Sex and Female Roles in videogames in a more...tasteful and mature way, perhaps part of the problem is that the two are used gratuitously? Strippers in a Strip Club made sense, but have them walking down the street and then you get Controversy, it seems.

Thanks again for bringing light to this issue, Kirithem.

  • I think this is a very important thing that needs to be talked about. I think games CAN be considered an art form but they need to grow up first. Games like the upcoming Heavy Rain I think will go a ways toward that end, but I agree with the video entirely.

  • Broodmother in Dragon Age.

    HAHAHAHAHA

  • 2:58 KINGDOM HEARTS RULES

  • I blame fan art

  • When i was like 6-7 my mom didn`t let me play the Sega cuz she was on it nad once i woke up at 3 AM and i saw her on the SEGA xD

  • Also, I think Nintendo is mostly responsible for putting the image of video games being made for children, plus being toys by nature, one could say all video games are made for children, though that doesn't mean it has to be exclusively for children.

  • It's so odd how you seem to acknowledge the non-gaming audience...

  • It was for a class at SCAD.

  • About the campanion cube.... am I the only one who I didn't really care about that box?

  • @dm121984 I'd probably care more about the cube if it actually was a living sentient being then a...well building block with heart motifs.

  • @tokyojesusfist Well that is nice and your entitled to your opinion even if it is wrong.

  • @Fafnd You didn't specify how it's wrong, therefore your comment is meaningless. Try again.

  • @tokyojesusfist I didn't have to specify because your post was your opinion, not fact. An opinion is defined as a personal view, attitude, or appraisal. Often times this is a belief or judgement that rests on grounds insufficient to produce complete certainty. Meaning you can be wrong and no amount of personal views will turn your opinion into fact for everyone. From this point on I turn my back to you, you are not worth it.

  • @Fafnd Nice dodge attempt, but here's how it works: when you say somebody is wrong, you need to explain why. Otherwise your statement is meaningless.

  • Damn! Very well put, I'm behind you 100%.

  • 4:40

    OH MY BLOODY BLEEMING BLIMEY

  • manhunt got an ao rated without having any sex i think. They had it edit it for it to get an m rating but the ao version will be available for pc.

  • sex is what makes up a rated m game. screw whoever hates, screw whoever jacks off while watching game sex! ITS A FACT OF LIFE! it makes a game, A game!
