love this stuff, just doesn't get any better. Love my Clash and Foo Fighters, but these boys just f-ing rock!!!!! I think all good bands tie together with their predecessors a nd followers....... Very valuable contribution to rock and roll. Kick ass boyz!!!! Wow!!!!
I was a northern kid. But loved Hatchet. These guys played circles around their peers. This is not one of their better performances. The passing of DBJ brought sadness to me.
Now THERE'S a kick-ass move I've never seen before - DJB spinning his mike stand like a helicopter blade and sweeping it over the heads of his band mates at 5:51! Ha!
The :other" wild-asses from Florida...that's Molly Hatchet for ya. This is my favorite tune from this band.....continued success to them(even though Dave Hlubek is the only remaining original member), and RIP to Danny Joe Brown(tinking Duane's gone as well).
let me tell you a little story back in the late 70s ihade the pleasure of meeting dave at the yellowfrog in jax fla in normandy mall and get this i was 13 he ask me 2 go to lunch with him i was tripin this dde had a 65 gold vete painted up with hatch plates on it we ate at hardies he gave me a ride home met my mom and autograph my albums 4me he really cared about the fans thanks again dave
@utubejunkie5150 Hey man I'm from Jacksonville, Florida and I so remember Normandy Mall, I used to see Johnny Van Zant there all the time :)...But I dont remember the Yellowfrog, what kind of place was it? Jacksonville bands rock!! :)
I live in the DC area and back in the 1970s some friends and I would go to Normandy Mall and a few other places in Jville but I do not remember a place called the Yellow Frog either. The next time I run into Skynyrd and Medlocke I will have to ask him. Are you sure the name Yellow Frog is right?
Danny Joe Brown was the most bad-ass frontman in all of rock and roll! He woulda drank Greg Allman under the table, and beat the crap out of Keith Richards
I just saw them in MA this past Thursday. Check the website and see if they are coming........a very good possibility. Although it's only one of the guitarists from the original lineup, a fun show to see, regardless.
I saw Molly Hatchet at Veterns stadium in Philly back in the day. They opened for the Outlaws. We had last of the general admission floor seats before they were banned due to the incident at that Who concert. Anyway, we were leaning on the stage for the entire show and it was one of the best experiences of my life! I will take the memory of that concert to my grave!
@bagger101 I'm also from Canada I got every lp except for devils canion. Molly Hatchet should tour Ontario. I've gotten drunk to Molly Hatchet lots of times. Molly Hatchet rules past, present and future.

@superMOPAR540 how fukin' right you are. listened to it from the mountains of north carolina has made me think of some fine times and as much as i hate to admit, it's caused me to cry on occasion.
@superMOPAR540 Believe it or not, I introduced Bob and Tom From Indianapolis to Skynyrd and Hatchet

these guys are so good in concert.I had teh pleasure of meeting Danny Joe Brown before he died I think about a year or so.I remembr it was 1999 and at the Dugout in Bensalem,Pa and they were so damn good,it was probably one of the ebst concerts I wsa ever at,aside from Deep Purple in 1987.
wow.....saw them for the first time the day 3 Mile Island tripped....March 28, 1978 - at Lehigh County College right down the road from the nuc plant. Actually was the beginning of a 5 yr groupie thing. Smoked some pot backstage with them and took alot of pictures....used those pictures to continue to get us backsatge at the Spectrum in Philly, at JFK Stadium, the convention center.....great great memories. Danny had the voice...Dave had a thing for my sister.....I just enjoyed the party !!
I thought these guys were great and also very underrated in my opinion. I especially like their original lineup and first 3 or 4 albums. CDs not invented at that time
I remember the first time I saw MOLLY HATCHET they opened up for TED NUGENT that was one of the best show's I've seen! I seen them many times after that growing up in GATOR country.
Man I do miss Danny Joe Brown! RIP Danny!! You and the boys brought us a lot of great times. I remember one spring break that Molly Hatchet was plaing in Tampa and we all stayed an extra day so we could party with MH!! Every time I hear this song I think about spring of 1979!! Thanks for the memories guys, you sure did know how to rock your asses off!!!
There's a gator in the bushes - until u've lived in FL, you don't really appeciate that...lol
Southern rock introduced dual lead guitars - and the soul of generations...
It's great 2 revisit what I saw in the day - and still miss.....mostly some incredible musicians with lyics that reflected the lives of those around them. :)

Takes me back to the days when Jacksonville was the rock and roll capitol off the world. Skynyrd - Blackfoot - 38 special - Molly Hatchet - Johnny Van Zant band - I saw'em all playing in the bars around Jax, those were the days my friend.
Theres only about a dozen people that are from Flordia that dont suck, that would be Skynyrd and Hatchet....the rest of Flordia needs a roll of toilet paper. Broward County Needs Two-Ply.

I may be wrong about this or they are paying Respect's to the Other's......... thier were all good friends
As is evident here, MH was nothing but a bunch of constipated, adolescent, reactionary rednecks who ripped off the sound of every "southern" band they could. If it weren't for Skynyrd, nobody would ever have heard of MH.
I was born and raised in south Alabama (thanks for the insult DJB!) and I got out of that miasma of backwardness called "The South" as fast as I could.
Loved Skynyrd (RVZ years) and learned their songs. Sad that they devolved into Republican hippies (or whatever they are).
Not hardly on the "sound stealing". Actually RVZ was Hatchet's first producer and was a fan of the band because they didn't sound like anyone else. As far as the insult, thank Banner because he wrote the lyrics. Dave wrote the music.
'Jerseyboy38' - As far as his diabetes is concerned, the touring didn't affect is health, his excesses affected his health.
You're right that record sales slipped because the change in singers, but sales also slipped because the band had gotten lazy in their song writing (that's a quote from Dave Hlubek to me a couple of months ago).
@Jerseyboy38 - I've been friends with the guys for a very long time (Bobby & I go back over 20 yrs). The current lineup are some terrific musicians and really good people.
BTW - they have a new CD coming out today (6/1); it's called "Justice".
To 'Dogheadj' - on your statement that the record label "forced" Danny Joe to leave the band because of his whistling & gruff voice...let me say this....you have NO IDEA what you're talking about. The record label HAD nothing to do with Danny Joe leaving. Danny Joe left for a variety of reasons and here's 2 of them: 1) bad management and he felt he was the only one standing up to them and 2) lots & lots of excesses (do I need to explain them?).
RIP Danny Joe and Duane. I heard Hatchet for the first time on birthday my in 1978-Louisville concert on king biscuit flower hour. i was hooked. Always will be. I have every album-live recording etc...They are and always be my youth.
ive senn them 3 times back in the 70' and ive been to shitload of concerts, but i tell ya......its the only concerts where you felt like you had gotten ur ass whooped! killer!
HOT.. i grad when this came out.. actually had a 45 from DC101 radio with this on it.. wish i still had it...but danny ?? RIP...great band thanks for this memory
Thanks for posting this; great to see these live clips.
I, too, seem to remember losing interest in Molly Hatchet when they switched off to another vocalist. DJB's voice had a certain grit to it that added character.
My only complaint is that the tempo is slowed down so that it makes this performance sound sluggish. I don't expect live shows to sound just like the studio record, but more speed would have brought more energy. Just my two cents worth.
Didnt you just love the days when guitarists were so good they could play behind their head and do other awesome tricks and still sound great? Too bad there arent very many musicians at all today who can even play guitar conventionally.
Yea 21TH21 could'nt have said it better myself. It's as if the lead guitarist is a die'n breed. The only way i see good guitar work is to come on Youtube and look up songs and bands over 20 years ago. What happend?
The whistle is one of the reasons DJB was forced to leave the band by the record label. As the early '90's came on, the label felt that DJB's gruff voice and "truck stop whistle" were out of date. I liked DJB though.
Could not be more incorrect. DJB suffered from diabetes beginning in his teens. The grueling pace of touring severely affected his health. He left MH on his terms. Record sales suffered dramatically following DJBs departure. Check it out yourself.
Earlier this year the state was thinking about changing the official song. I live here in Gator Country and the only song that came to mind was this one! Excellent!
"...just a little bit of that, CHOMP, CHOMP!" What a great song by a great band. Big ole Dave Hlubek does look like Chris Farley jumping around like he lives "in a van down by the river"...I doubt if Chris could have played guitar like that, though! Thanks for the upload, matseretan!!!
Thanks for this posting. 1983 was a huge year for Hatchet Danny and the boys were ata peak. Did DJB ever play college or pro football? The guy's built like a damn line backer.
And whats up with people bitching about no original members left?! For ChrisTsakes, Skynyrd's been going around for years with only Gary and Billy in the band, and people are loving it, making them sellout arenas, why?, because JohnnY Van Zant is singing!?!?! he sounds and performs (which is why people are going to the shows) like his brother Ronnie. So why can't hatchet do the same! I mean, DLB is deader than a doornail, so why can Phil, Bobby and the boys just keep recording and playing live?
Deader than a doornail, huh? See, that is the same disrespect you showed on your Boogie No More post. Ingram may own the name, but they can't BECOME those guys. Skynyrd-same thing. Can't blame GR for making $, but lyrics-"You can't always get what you want sometimes?" RVS is spinning! There's a generation that wants both bands as "their own" cuz they dig the original music and what the bands were all about, just can't be. Enjoy your MH, but please think before u come at us with New&Improved.
You bet your sweet behind Jacksonville is Gator Country and southern rock heaven. Skynyrd - Hatchet - Blackfoot - 38 special and even the Allman brothers band formed in Jacksonville though the members are from Georgia. I saw'em all play in the bars around town. We'll never forget that era in Jax.
I can't believe people would criticize something that happend decades ago, these people are legends... You cannot criticize someone who has accomplished way more than you ever will.
Gator Country is NOT "IN" Jacksonville,Fl. It is not a "place"! Gator Country is the name of a band that Duane Roland from Molly Hatchet started. It was a combination of several southern rock bands.
in checking wikipedia it seems that danny joe left the band and then came back after two albums. by then they had already lost me as a fan. Epic records could have TOLD SOMEBODY!!!
R.I.P.~Danny Joe Brown...... This Hatchet was the best!!! I remember listening to them HARD, right after Skynyrd's plane went down.... RIP-Ronny, Allen, Leon, Steve, Cassie, Dean... God Bless Molly Hatchet, & Lynyrd Skynyrd, both from Jacksonville.....
My first concert at Market Square Arena...Molly Hatchet and the Allman Brothers. Southern Rock at its best. The greatest album covers ever

You're right that record sales slipped because the change in singers, but sales also slipped because the band had gotten lazy in their song writing (that's a quote from Dave Hlubek to me a couple of months ago).

@mizzouborn Thanks for the update. Are you affiliated with the band, family?
Jerseyboy38 1 year ago
@Jerseyboy38 - I've been friends with the guys for a very long time (Bobby & I go back over 20 yrs). The current lineup are some terrific musicians and really good people.
BTW - they have a new CD coming out today (6/1); it's called "Justice".
mizzouborn 1 year ago

I predict this soon will hit the charts again when the Florida Gators win the National Championship (again) this year!

Didnt you just love the days when guitarists were so good they could play behind their head and do other awesome tricks and still sound great? Too bad there arent very many musicians at all today who can even play guitar conventionally.
21TH21 3 years ago 2
Yea 21TH21 could'nt have said it better myself. It's as if the lead guitarist is a die'n breed. The only way i see good guitar work is to come on Youtube and look up songs and bands over 20 years ago. What happend?

Molly Hatchet-awsome band, but do they have to whistle in every song
Xxbadhabit420Xx 3 years ago
The whistle is one of the reasons DJB was forced to leave the band by the record label. As the early '90's came on, the label felt that DJB's gruff voice and "truck stop whistle" were out of date. I liked DJB though.
Dogheadj 3 years ago
Sorry, that should have been "early '80's". And I didn't make the decision; the record company did.
Dogheadj 3 years ago
Could not be more incorrect. DJB suffered from diabetes beginning in his teens. The grueling pace of touring severely affected his health. He left MH on his terms. Record sales suffered dramatically following DJBs departure. Check it out yourself.

SeanieMCash 3 years ago
Deader than a doornail, huh? See, that is the same disrespect you showed on your Boogie No More post. Ingram may own the name, but they can't BECOME those guys. Skynyrd-same thing. Can't blame GR for making $, but lyrics-"You can't always get what you want sometimes?" RVS is spinning! There's a generation that wants both bands as "their own" cuz they dig the original music and what the bands were all about, just can't be. Enjoy your MH, but please think before u come at us with New&Improved.

ya well i'm gonna leave you with this:
don't judge a book over its cover
the 2 era hatchet bands are as good as each other and its nice to see ingram wants to keep goin and not leave there music die!
SeanieMCash 3 years ago
You bet your sweet behind Jacksonville is Gator Country and southern rock heaven. Skynyrd - Hatchet - Blackfoot - 38 special and even the Allman brothers band formed in Jacksonville though the members are from Georgia. I saw'em all play in the bars around town. We'll never forget that era in Jax.

I can't believe people would criticize something that happend decades ago, these people are legends... You cannot criticize someone who has accomplished way more than you ever will.

you do realize that they were also talking about Florida, in the sense that they enjoyed it more than anywhere else they had been?

Gator Country is NOT "IN" Jacksonville,Fl. It is not a "place"! Gator Country is the name of a band that Duane Roland from Molly Hatchet started. It was a combination of several southern rock bands.
bonnie2493 3 years ago
ya but they are callin florida the gator country
the band could not take the name molly hatchet because its already in use by bobby and phil and the boys
SeanieMCash 3 years ago
It is absolutely possible to be up to your ass in alligators in Jacksonville. "Gator Country" is from Southern Georgia all the way to New Orleans.
