@NewWorldOmagh LOL, YES! Only the strong will be selected for life, the weak will be "recycled" and fed to the strong. If tobacco plants could watch movies they would be horrified at this Sci-fi scenario.
I was wondering if on top of the fridge would be warm enough for germination as I don't have great access to my water heater its mounted high in a cabinet (And I'm short lol).
@Moralvorstellung7 You could let them grow out, but remember these are very small to begin with and there are a lot of seedlings per cell. They will quickly crowd one another and their root systems will intertwine.
If you wait to thin them out you will need to scissors in lieu of pulling them: if you pull one, you will probably pull them all out.
I'm 15, and very interested to grow exotic plants, only for decoration and learning about them. Is it legal 15yo to buy any nicotiana seeds, and grow them? I don't smoke tobacco, or use any other intoxicants.
@JauhoPeltola Check out the my response to "luckyclover" below who had a similar question. Legality with tobacco doesn't come into play until you have a smokable product in hand which is a long and intensive process, (we will cover this in future videos). But if you are 15 you would definitely need parental permission first as the plants themselves will take up a considerable amount of room in your flower garden, which your mom may not be willing to give you. :)
@ramseydarkstar You could start with less seeds if you really want to grow these sparingly. However we sell these in packets of 500 seeds so you will have more than enough for the season, germination rates go down every year if there are any left overs. We typically recommend about 7 seeds per cell, this year we had a 99% germination rate! So per cell, you'd get about 7 sprouts! Even so, it is more worth your time to have too many sprouts than none at all, it also gives you the option to...
@SurfMonkeyCoconut keep only the healthiest and strongest plant out of the bunch!
Again its just a matter of time, and how valuable you perceive it to be. If you have lots of time to kill, you could sow 1 at a time, personally id rather waste a few seeds to save myself a week's worth of time.
@lucklyclover58 This is a good question, but I am sorry to say: yes it would be technically illegal for you to grow if you are under 18. Similar to alcohol laws, alcohol itself is a 100% legal substance to have and consume, but to minors. This is the same situation, where you may be able to carry an unopened bottle of wine around, but you cannot drink it. (Unless your parents/guardians look the other way.)
However growing a tobacco plant is really only about 40% of the process to getting...
...a consumable product, you cannot smoke or eat a leaf taken right off a plant. If you air cure a leaf to a golden brown color, (which takes about a month under the right conditions) you will get a nasty headache from the ammonia in the leaf. The leaf must be fermented first, (90 degrees plus 90% humidity for about 6-8 weeks straight!) then rested in a humidor for another month to 5 years. There is a lot of effort involved that only the most dedicated minor would attempt. but in the end...
you may find yourself at the legal age to buy tobacco at the store, since the process takes so long!! There are other plants, (illegal ones to grow at any age), that are actually easier to grow and harvest than tobacco, if you were able to grow them in your garden. (this statement does not include any elaborate indoor grow room setups or hydroponic systems).
When thinning maaaaany seedlings, it can seem an epic battle, might i suggest Requiem for a tower as the music of choice :P. Love this vid series many thanks for posting
at about that sized tobacco plants i put them in separate pots nearly the same way he does, and all plants survived....what's the point to drop them out....
@ektonas hey there, you could potentially pull out each sprout with tweezers and plant in separate pots, but you run the risk of damaging roots. In this demo, we are thinning out the weaker sprouts so that the strongest single plant, with the best chances of surviving gets all the room it needs. in part 3 of this series, when the plant gets bigger you can clearly see 2 plants cannot possibly co-habitate a single starter cell.
@SurfMonkeyCoconut Oh damn, I thought otherwise :D I got like 30 plants and soon I won't be able to grow it outside. They are gonna take a lot of space inside :D

Thinning your plants with tweezers? Let them grow and thin them out by hand when they are more mature. Tweezers? Geez

why would you not just try and plant all them? instead of wasting them all? Or start with less seeds?
ramseydarkstar 8 months ago
@ramseydarkstar Because you'll get about one million of seeds from one flowering plant.
