I got luck and got a new 2010 Sig 556 / 223 Classic Swat for $1200.00 New in the box. It was the last one Gander Mtn. had and they discontenued them is why it was so cheap
@OleMissdph While they look nice, I wouldn't advise getting a 556 rifle. I think a good AR would be a much better choice, but that's for you to decide. As for suppressors, I don't like how Advanced Armament has a lot of point-of-impact shift. I think Surefire cans are better in that regard. That said, I think they are both litigous ass clowns, suing one another like a bunch of spineless pansies.
thank you...i appreciate your input..if you wouldn't mind me asking....what are your thoughts about pistol grip 12 ga. shotguns.... such as a mossberg 500 pistol grip with tactical grip and permanent muzzle brake?
@OleMissdph I find that the only way to have a usable pistol-gripped shotgun is to have both front and rear pistol grips to allow you to brace yourself. They can be painful to shoot, but with both pistol grips it will allow you to aim, which you will HAVE to do if you intend to actually hit something. Firing shotguns from the hip is a big misconception. It is very easy to miss with a shotgun at close ranges if you do not aim it.
@boricuaDV Question for ya; Would you recommend this for a 1st time rifler shooter/user ? Also would you recommend SIG or Bushmaster for a home defense rifle as far as Flat top rifles / carbine flat tops?
@Onfire4Christ777 I can't recommend either weapon for self defense, but if I had to choose one, I would choose the Bushmaster. There are way too many problems with these SIG rifles and they are little more than a hobbyist rifle. That said, you can get a MUCH better AR15 than Bushmaster for around $1k nowadays; Colt, Daniel Defense, Bravo Company, Spikes Tactical...that is what I would recommend.
@boricuaDV Ahh ok that is cool =) I was just curious on if i decided to get a rifle what would be good choices. I don't know very much of anything about guns so i figured i'd ask someone who does. What pistol would you recommend? Berretta? Glock? Smith&Wesson? Tarus?
@boricuaDV "You could spend your money better" or "you could get an AR for WAY cheaper" But hobbyist rifle? C'mon man.....Most here would probably rather take a Sig 556 when SHTF. HA! most would take a 581 series Mini 14 over an AR.
@Deltaspeed93 Just as the US Military did, I too wasted a lot of time and money trying to find a "better" rifle than the AR15. None of the alternatives offer enough measurable gains to justify the trade-off in parts commonality/logistics for a true SHTF application. With SIG, the quality control is a big problem and parts are ONLY available from SIG. The 556 is not at the same level as a Swiss rifle. A good AR with lube will run and run and run. Google "Pat Rogers Filthy 14" for a good read.
@boricuaDV a good ar will not run reliably with a suppressor like a piston 556. idk why you said that sig has cq problems, as far as i know, they are not of lesser quality than any other company. if anything, i sig is better.
@HellaFlushEvo I've never seen a properly built AR with a properly spec'd gas port have any problems running suppressed, and that includes carbine length gas systems. SIG's QC sucks big time on these rifles. It is their own design, yet they have had problems with canted rails, bolt carriers that peen the trunion, incorrectly drilled gas valves with identical sized holes, cheap knock-off sights that fall apart and buttstocks that break. That's the TRUE history of the American 556.
@boricuaDV from looking at the stock, it seems it wasn't the 09+ version. a di gun runs more dirty with a suppressor, thats why im getting a 556. but if what you say is true about the bad cq, wouldn't sig fix it under warranty?
@HellaFlushEvo Carbon fouling has to go somewhere. On the SIGs, it gets vented out of the handguard, but a lot of it fouls the piston as well. Compared to an HK, the AR15 runs clean as a whistle! SIG's warranty fixes have been shoddy at best: shimming the uneven optics rail, shaving the bolt carriers and trunions instead of re-engineering them, the list goes on. They need the help of the Swiss badly!
Do you have any bolt carrier wear problems on your SIG? check the front left side to see if it is impacting the trunnion. sigarms556dotcom has a thread on this.
This particular rifle did develop carrier wear as you described. I believe the original owner no longer owns this rifle. This, combined with the cheap quality furniture, makes for an expensive rifle that I cannot recommend at this time. That is, unless you want to spend another few hundred dollars to make wrongs right.
Sig at this really is disappointing. When I bought mine I had to buy a rear sight, replace the cheap handguards and send it to SIG 2 times. The upper and lower had so much play that I thought I was using a tonka toy.
aw, the ACOG, the best damn sight to ever grace this earth. since i got mine i've only sighted it once. ONCE. i have it on a bolt .308, and have put over 1000rd's down range since i put it on. its efin amazing.
Thats actually pretty common. Most ranges are semi-auto only, at least in Illinois. And by semi-auto, I mean 1 round per trigger pull. 1 round at a time doesn't mean shoot, wait for the hit, shoot again.
Nice rifle/ACOG/AAC package. Out of curiosity, where is this range that only allows one round at a time? I have never heard of a range with such stringent rules.
No - NFA items are legal in many states provided you get the right signature or have a Trust, and pay the $200 tax stamp. The rifle in the video was semi-auto. I don't think any fully automatic SIG 556 rifles are available to those who are not in law enforcement...
Hit or miss. Some have bolt carrier wear and or bad barrels. Mine had to go back to sig for a new barrel and gas system. Get one that has a serial number between 3000-15000. Mine was over 30,000 and they changed the machines and messed everything up.
rock river makes excellent ar-15's you might want to check into a rock river coyote. Although thats a tad expensive. DPMS makes ar's that fire pretty good I know mine works great
While I agree the diopter is overpriced if purchased separately, the diopter comes with the Classic SWAT. SIG does not sell the rifle any other way. There is only one part number for this rifle and the sight is included.
I have my DCM model forsale right now and when I go out of state I'm picking up a classic or classic swat. I will have to removed the folding stock and add a permanent muzzle break to replace the flash hider. My SIG was just a lemon.
What, specifically, don't you like about it? In my experience the factory diopter works better than the popsicle stick sight, and it is better than them not giving you any sights at all (like they used to). I've not noticed any problems whatsoever with the factory (included) diopter, other than the fact that it sits taller than the original. Then again, this rifle is a far cry from a real SIG 551
Very pricey, Bulky, and seemed to not work well on my rifle. The ARMS 40L works great and I use it with the folding samson front sight. Many other people have used it and didn't like it. It must be because of the price and that it doesn't fold down.
Ahh, ok. I am in the opposite camp. I think this rifle needs a diopter sight and not AR aftermarket accessories. It was a big letdown to me that the first 556 was more like an AR than a 551. I think the Classic is close to what the rifle should be, but it too has its share of problems that make it unattractive.
The diopter works with the Classic and Classic SWAT front sight post, but it is my understanding that it will not zero on the other models due to differences in the sight post heights.
I think that is what the problem was. The first diopter sight sig made was not working on all the different models. It really made guys mad they had to switch out the front sights or buy the Aurora sight.
Chambered in 5.56mm, the SIG 556 fires both 5.56 and .223 safely. We ran Olympic 62 grain 5.56mm, Remington 55gr .223, Federal American Eagle 55gr .223, and Wolf 62 gr .223 on this outing. Unsuppressed, the rifle seemed to shoot better with the 55gr Remington .223, but with the Suppressor it liked the 5.56mm 62 grain loads. That's just the info we took away from the loads we tested out...
Just purchased a sig556 Swat. I am looking to put a new scope Ncstar Mark III and was wondering if I need to remove the front site. Noticed that you left yours on.
With the 4x ACOG, the magnification carries you right past the front sight. I did not notice the front sight interfering with the scope's sight picture in any way.
Great, thanks. Not sure how much trouble it is to remove (probably really easy but haven't really looked at it that close) and would like to leave if it doesn't interfere. Scope I am getting is a 4x9
Did you remove your front sight? I started to but was too afraid to screw it up. The front sight isn't co-witness compatible with many scopes and that flip up rear one sucks. I just used the Sigtac Halo and that gets the job done for me.
No, the front sight stays put. This ACOG has 4x magnification, so you do not see it at all when using the scope. Typically, the words co-witness and scope are't used in the same sentence, as co-witnessing is usually only possible with a non-magnified (1x) optic. Hope that helps!
My bad, I wasn't thinking about your Acog being magnified. With an eotech for example, you would want to have the ability to use your back up sights if need be (battery goes dead or whatever). Thats what I meant by Co-witness. With a ACOG I would remove the front sight, but thats just merely a cosmetic thing.
Someone has said that the SIG Diopter and factory front sight will co-witness with an Aimpoint in a low mount, but I have no clue if the height of an EOTech would allow for a co-witness or not. I guess SIG has had many problems when it comes to iron sight set-ups on the 556 :|

Most likely to get this because - as a Sig addict, you can't just have one in your collection.
Beside, .303 rounds for me is getting a tag expensive and I don't reload my ammo. (yet)
