I've heard the studio track more than enough times to know that the guitar here is playback. Drums and vocals are undoubtedly live though. I expect MTV wouldn't let them do the whole thing live.. Bands are never allowed to play live when it's being televised.. I hate TV.
I wrote the song "Still of the Night" for Whitesnake, friends of Def Leppard. The inspiration was the 1982 movie of the same title starring Roy Scheider, Meryl Streep (who Joe Elliott claims to be his favorite actress), Jessica Tandy (the original Blanche Dubois in A Street Car Named Desire which inspired the song Heart Shaped Box by Nirvana) and Joe Srifasi. Joe Elliott of Def Leppard discovered me at the age of 15 in 1983. I also wrote for Evanescence, Def Leppard, INXS, Nirvana, and more
Elsewhere on youTube you can find the same Whitesnake line-up in the same year playing everything live...so I guess it was MTV that wanted to use the record for the music tracks on the above "performance."
Really digging Sykes (he went to Blue Murder from here) at least Coverdale eventually learned his lesson and got Reb Beach to play for the rest on out (so far)... !!!
Funny to hear the exact studio version in a live setting. Lip sync? for sure guitar sync. Sykes is putting blue murder back together. Keep an eye out.
Blame the revolving-door nature of Whitesnake on why John Sykes isn't in this video.....even Coverdale himself would tell you Sykes and company were the studio band (a 4-piece), and the guys that appeared in the music videos were the touring band (a 5-piece). Then it was Steve Vai by himself on the next album, thanks to an accident Vandenberg had with his playing hand that kept him from the recording studio.
That was clearly Sykes' studio solo and pretty much the rest of the guitars are from the studio version. Still a cool video that shows what MTV used to be about (i.e. the music).
too funny this guy whining about the showmanship in this video. John Sykes is the man but this is a killer live lineup everyone of them. The shows were amazing and your a putz to whine about them.
Even though there are great moments in music from the 80s, it is the most cringe-worthy decade that I have lived through. I loved this song when it came out, now it almost embarrasses me to watch a video like this. These guys could have actually done a killer LIVE version of the song, skipped all the prancing and I think that we'd all be a bit happier at the end.
Wtf is wrong with the dance moves of the guitar players, or even the violin bow, if i want to see a live show, i want to see a live SHOW, if i just wanted a couple of dudes standing in the same spot playing looking at their guitars i wouldnt go to a concert, they are supposed to appeal to the crowd, i hate lady gaga but doesnt she move around and dance? it's called PERFORMING, cheesy or not, i would love to see them live(and yes i know this is a half-playback)
@Aberlour i could not said it better my self. this is the kind of music videos that we used to see on mtv & vh1 now theses so called music channals are nothing but about slutty girls and stupid dum reality shows. put mtv & vh1 back to the way it was ment to be about good music videos like this. todays music sucks we can"t get that feel from the music from todays that we could from 80s music. it was about the sex, drugs, & rock "n" roll i will take the sex & rock "n" roll keep the drugs.
It's taped music and live vocals. Those are Ansley Dunbar's drum tracks, and Sykes guitar parts. Cheesey 80's for sure, but this lineup was killer when I saw it.
@SenseiDonGraham You can tell it's the album music playing and he's singing live to it. Notice how it just fades at the and (like the album version) Pretty lame considering that was a killer lineup and those guys could've totally pulled it off live. Guess it was easier to have them air guitar it...lol
A simple appearance/ performance on an awards show has turned into a scandal if you read all the comments. The song is all real, enjoy the tune instead of talking shit about big hair and wannabe this and that. The violinbow is silly period, even when Jimmy Page does it. People tend to forget that silly is a big part of every artist's appeal. The only thing sillier than an artist is a fan.
Kind of lame... It's only half live, with live drumming, and vocals... The worst part's all the cheesy movements these guys make onstage while they fake play this song on stage... I'm so glad that shit died with the 80s...
@edoggcentral666 well, artist and band have to play "half playback" on live tv and stuff even today. they are expected to sound super good and just like the record..
This is what Mtv Awards shows were about not the stuff you see on there today they now call award music shows. mtv forgot what music is now. anyone agree with me leave me you comment. check out my youtube channal drpepperchris39
Oh man. I just saw the bow part. lol How pathetic. Im 42 so im well aware of this era and i guess at the time it seemed cool but i was young and dumb what excuse do these guys have. Burn this now.
3:30 what is that gay move the base player does? I think its kind of sad. 70's musicians playing the 80's game. Its contrived and really silly looking. I would bet my left arm Coverdale is embarassed about this. The music is good but the look is bad.
@zigzagbigbag looks like hes doing ballet or somethling. Cool then very sad now to watch. Juan Croucier from ratt used to do those stupid ballet moves.
I remember recording this on a VCR back in the day & it was one of my faves. I listen to it now, and I have to agree that it's live vocals over the album track's music. Every note of the instruments is spot on to the album. Still a kick ass performance, but not 100% live.
such an amazing song, coverdale is amazingg. i love the sound the bow makes with adrian's guitar! everytime ive seen whitesnake live, they've always played this song fucking beautifully! LOVE IT.
Sykes turned Whitesnake into a MONSTER with his songwriting contributions. Obviously Coverdale & Whitesnake flourished for a couple of years on it. But hasnt been able to recapture that thru out the years & lineups. The new CD is their best since Sykes....unfortunately, it wont recieve much airplay in todays market.
Coverdales' Vocals are the only thing "Live" on here. The music is the instrumental version of the song. John Sykes is the guitarist here. Vivian and Adrian are just "Playing along" with the music. NO instruments were "Live" here.. .. .. All Pre-recorded with Live Vocals only...

being a sykes fan, it is painfull to hear this song and not see him, this song has sykes all over it, would love to see him murray and dunbar do this live,
The vocal sounds like it was manipulated with some kind of echo processor
when you goes into the still of the nighttttttttttttttt section in the middle. His signature scream seems to go on forever. I love the band to this day still dont know if the vocal wa touched up or if he was using a long delay unit on his microphone..
When I first saw this - live - I though tit sounded too album. It still does. Not that Vivian wouldn't be able to pull it off, but this is probably Coverdale singing to tracks.
I love rudy, but please stop lickin the f!@#$en bass. He did that garbage so much during this period. and as is if they needed any more zeppelin flack, adrian whips out the bow.
Yeah the comparisons between Robert and DC never made much sense. DC doesnt sound like Plant and him being accused of ripping off LZ............WOW, please. They both have wailing voices but really....DC will be 60 this year and he sounded unreal at 56.....@zeppelin642
@zeppelin642 Not sure I agree with that. DC has a far greater vocal range. Still strong enough to front a touring rock outfit too. Me thinks RP ducked out of touring with Zep cos he's no longer up to it. He might be good singing world music with sittars and bongos, and the occasional country and western duet but he never could do the "rock" thing live. LZ were a good studio band tho. :-)
played with these arrogant bastards a few times also. but this song is talking to me, right now. just teasing in re: to the arrogant bastards comment. Great song with standing the test of time.
It FADES out. Of course it's a damn play back. I've seen Both Whitesnake and John Sykes in concert. John Sykes has more talent in his little finger than this entire band does.
I'm pretty sure that is the 87 line-up, The line up during the recording of the album were dismissed by Coverdale, Coverdale then hired a touring band shortly after the release of Whitesnake/Whitesnake album. Coverdale wanted a more glam looking band, Campbell who played lead guitar (The dark haired one) was released or rather fired in 88, he was replaced by Steve Vai.
@wiley2068 NO---it wasnt just that...john sykes was waaaay better looking than vivian....he was jealous of john sykes, so they fell out of graces...john wrote about half of that '87 album, or at least co wrote.
Another way to pull off the cello part is to use volume knob and echo, ala EVH... I used to do that in the first club band I was with, but it wasn't very visual so I switched to spiccato with a drum stick, lol...
Coverdale is really singing but it's to a canned track, sounds like the studio cut from the album. Adrian is a great guitar player but the violin bow thing here is all poser stuff. To make it sound semi-close, you would have to bounce the bow off the strings, very similar to Spiccato. One would have to partially mute the strings with the fretting hand while performing the spiccato with the bow and probaly decrease volume as well... I used to do the cello part with a drum stick live, lol...
wow is this really him singing live because wow, this is truely amazing, his voice is so amazing, as good as fellow deep purple band mate glenn hughes.
Man that violin thing is so over the top....it was a cello in the actual recording, the only live part of this is the vocals. And none of the band members here actually played on the record. John Sykes came up with this killer guitar sound, Coverdale wrote the lyrics. The rest is rock and roll history.
Amazing how John Sykes did alot of Whitesnake Greatest Songs and Guitar Solos yet You Never see the Guy in any Videos like Here I Go Again ,Is This Love, or Still of the Night . Seams as the Other guys get his Glory and Credit for his Musicianship it's Sad .. Whatesnake Rocks and so Does John Sykes where ever you are Great Guitar Hero ..
I agree with what you said. I think this video is funny. First of all, all the guys behind Coverdale all look like little kids that have to pee because they keep moving their legs funny. But what's really sad is they are all playing along with the actual recording from the studio and faking everything. But the singing is real and the drummer is actually playing along with the track. Other than that, its all Skykes on this song but they are faking playing the solo.
@MisterGUITAR1000 It's because that david coverdale asshole got rid of him for being too cocky. Then he hires the biggest douchebag vivian campbell? John sykes also wrote bulk of the songs on 1987 self title album. Coverdale bit the hand that fed him, what an idiot.
lol they arent actually playing, only the vocals are actually being sang here. you can tell because in solo with the first 2 dive bombs. one fades into the other exactly like on the record. you cant do that live lol.
I love this band and the era but this performance might as well have been an air guitar contest. The hysterical part is when the monitor declares "LIVE IN LOS ANGELES" Poor Vivian and Adrian are dancing on stage like they're stomping grapes.
Daves best performance is at Cal Jam 1 w/ Deep Purple. glam is the direction metal went in the early 80s. some great music, I personally shaved my head and went to punk rock venues in L.A. I would listen both punk and metal. I think i was the only one listening to both. today I am driving a bus in Hawaii, I play heavy metal C.D.s on my bus and the young are always saying TURN IT UP.
WTF is the band member doing at 3:10..are you kidding me..is this teh guy nmed sykes...geeez..he looks like a clown jumping around like a spazoid bacon bit.
@1MrSlash1 yah Sykes wrote most of the material on this album, had a fall out with Coverdale and still plays the Whitesnake stuff on his own and sings it better than David
let's remember.. coverdale had the still of the night riff from his purple days, he wrote himself crying in the rain, and here i go again he co-wrote with marsden.
The rest of the songs were co-written.
the last part is your opinion which not many would share.
I know the track very well, at least Coverdale is singing live. I doubt the music is live, and the solo is definitely a playback but David Coverdale IS singing live and he is doing an amazing job on the vocals...
And they call it live? This is a disgrace. The backing track is patched to h*ll allowing some hopeless wannabees get some stage-time. Backing band? Do me a favour. Coverdale: hold your head in shame.
And they call it live? This is a disgrace. The backing track is patched to hell allowing some hopeless wannabees get some stage-time. Backing band? Do me a favour. Coverdale: hold your head in shame.
@lp32862 : Recorded earlier, so they recorded it either that day and used it later, or perhaps from a good live performance in the past, but the vocals are probably live just to save face.
@lp32862 : Recorded earlier, so they recorded it either that day and used it later, or perhaps from a good live performance in the past, but the vocals are probably live just to save face. however we have seen in the past that is NOT always the case.
Great Live Performance, original song and rock unlike that utter shit rap they try to push on us intelligent people. No worries the time is coming when things will come to a head.
Look at those tools trying to play Sykes' guitar stuff. Haha! It took two guys to match the power that John had in ONE guitar, ONE amp. Smooth move David! Sykes rules!
Tonny Aldridge always amazing though, great with Ozzy, holds it all together

I'm so sick of guitars tuned so low you can't even tell what's going on.
Let's not forget the cookie monster voice.

I'm honestly shocked that people stand for it. You just can't make it with talent alone anymore.

It FADES out. Of course it's a damn play back. I've seen Both Whitesnake and John Sykes in concert. John Sykes has more talent in his little finger than this entire band does.

@BDRiley67 Sykes?...he of the pinch harmonic?

I'm pretty sure that is the 87 line-up, The line up during the recording of the album were dismissed by Coverdale, Coverdale then hired a touring band shortly after the release of Whitesnake/Whitesnake album. Coverdale wanted a more glam looking band, Campbell who played lead guitar (The dark haired one) was released or rather fired in 88, he was replaced by Steve Vai.
wiley2068 11 months ago
@wiley2068 NO---it wasnt just that...john sykes was waaaay better looking than vivian....he was jealous of john sykes, so they fell out of graces...john wrote about half of that '87 album, or at least co wrote.

If you a John Sykes fan check out his band from like 89 Blue Murder. The self titled album is a metal masterpiece.

Another way to pull off the cello part is to use volume knob and echo, ala EVH... I used to do that in the first club band I was with, but it wasn't very visual so I switched to spiccato with a drum stick, lol...
Gu77ed 11 months ago
Coverdale is really singing but it's to a canned track, sounds like the studio cut from the album. Adrian is a great guitar player but the violin bow thing here is all poser stuff. To make it sound semi-close, you would have to bounce the bow off the strings, very similar to Spiccato. One would have to partially mute the strings with the fretting hand while performing the spiccato with the bow and probaly decrease volume as well... I used to do the cello part with a drum stick live, lol...

wow is this really him singing live because wow, this is truely amazing, his voice is so amazing, as good as fellow deep purple band mate glenn hughes.

yiannisdax 1 year ago

MisterGUITAR1000 1 year ago 24
@MisterGUITAR1000 yeah, he was great, but he never had anything to do with the song Here I go Again...cheers!

@MisterGUITAR1000

One of the greatest guitar players ever..............
ivosdv 7 months ago
@MisterGUITAR1000 It's because that david coverdale asshole got rid of him for being too cocky. Then he hires the biggest douchebag vivian campbell? John sykes also wrote bulk of the songs on 1987 self title album. Coverdale bit the hand that fed him, what an idiot.

lol they arent actually playing, only the vocals are actually being sang here. you can tell because in solo with the first 2 dive bombs. one fades into the other exactly like on the record. you cant do that live lol.

@shredder1500 actually with the right amount of delay and reverb on the amp and changing harmonics quickly enough, ya you can

I love this band and the era but this performance might as well have been an air guitar contest. The hysterical part is when the monitor declares "LIVE IN LOS ANGELES" Poor Vivian and Adrian are dancing on stage like they're stomping grapes.

@Maxx61 hilarious post too funny just had to let you know
"stomping grapes" lol

oh... so it was his DREAM to make his guitar players to dance on his former guitar player (who he can't stand) 's work. i get it now. hahahaha
yeah i still visit, but what? without sykes? all i hear is blazing sykes' music here, even though DC's dream team's doing stupid dance on it. LOL

I'll bet Coverdale just cringes if he ever looks at this any more- talk about commercial packaging/performance.

1MrSlash1 1 year ago
@1MrSlash1 yah Sykes wrote most of the material on this album, had a fall out with Coverdale and still plays the Whitesnake stuff on his own and sings it better than David
zw331 1 year ago
@zw331 he co-wrote most of it.
let's remember.. coverdale had the still of the night riff from his purple days, he wrote himself crying in the rain, and here i go again he co-wrote with marsden.
The rest of the songs were co-written.
the last part is your opinion which not many would share.

1> What the fuck is Rudy Sarzo doing? Doesn't he have rhythm? Looks like a white girl skipping double dutch.
2> I bet they won best lip sync that year, cuz aint no one on that stage playing anything.
3> Good to know that even back then, Vivian Campbell was as worthless as he is in Leppard.
Thanks for posting!

SvAleRiRb 1 year ago
@SvAleRiRb No one claimed the vocals were dubbed. Reference to 'backing band' might've given you the clue. Duh.
cuculus50 1 year ago
@cuculus50 Coverdale has not called it live?
And sometimes they did playback, like on top of the pops. It was for promotion.

Could some one kindly explain what 'playback' means for us who have no clue? Please.....thank you.

@lp32862 : Recorded earlier, so they recorded it either that day and used it later, or perhaps from a good live performance in the past, but the vocals are probably live just to save face.
