  • How is the spark retarded

  • motorcycle type clutch.

  • I remember my father would put blocks of wood to hold the pedals down over night. I remember the Model Ts when there a lot of them on the roads.

  • What a classic car O_O didn't know these still even existed

  • If the clutch is "glued", why not push start it? or jack the wheel up and spin it?

  • it seems like you need a PHD in Enginering to start one of these cars

  • Good video but I have a question and comment.

How does pushing on the brake or reverse peddle help to squeeze the oil out of the clutch?

At 3:10 in the video you say "this is retarding the spark" but the picture at the same time shows you advancing the spark. This could confuse someone and could be a real safety concern for someone that does not know better.

  • @jthode33 im pretty sure it applys pressure to the plates

  • @playingwithfirehurts no, theres no oil in the bell housing of a standard modern car

  • @TheAstro30 i wouldnt consider a T a "standard modern car"

  • hope he doesnt stall the car :)

  • Um, pardon me, but I think that today the term retard is inappropriate. I believe the appropriate term is challenged or special. You must challenge the spark or special it.

  • The spark is retarted lol

  • Oh how true. My father drilled me on this subject. My weekly bout with these things

was to get Kerosine imagine $.09 a gal. His idea was when I get back. Just leave

it just so hot oil settles, say 15-20min. Then go back & release emerg. (that now

squishes the clutch disk's, then pull back emer. now in neutral, then stomp on all

three> low rev & brake, just sit there (squish oil from the bands) If you get frost

bite, then time to go, now release emerg. good to go. sam

  • Thank you for your videos. They have been most helpful to me with my model t ford. Your explanations are simple and to the point.

  • Ah - I heard my late father talking about the joys of starting and driving a T. Thanks to you, I can better see what he was on about! He also said that they had no petrol pump, so if you went up a decent hill with a tank less than half full, you had to turn around and go up in reverse to prevent the engine from starving!

  • Thats really cool! Are model Ts still street legal? Nice video!

  • @Dafanmon2500 I think they are, as long as you fit it with proper rear-view mirrors. The other day I saw a restored Model T in running condition on eBay Motors for a mere $10,000!

  • If I ever had to daily drive a Model T in the winter, I would most likey install a magnetic block heater on the bottom of the oil pan. In combination with squeezing out the oil via the pedals, I bet sheed be an easy starter bright early in the morning

  • "Honey can you go start the car....sure baby, I'll be back in an hour...."

  • @buddybestor I wonder when they added electric start.

  • @buddybestor 1 hour later: Fuck this crap i'm getting a Corolla

  • "the spark plug is now retarded" lmao

  • I have always thought that T-Fords are almost impossible to start at cold weather. Thank's for reminding that nothing is impossible.

  • great clip, many years ago i went for a ride with a bloke that had a model t as used by a farmer, it was very basic , very little body work except for the firewall and a small tray area behind , the seat was i would describe as a few boards on a couple of leaf springs, he gave it some big throttle input, we probably were`nt doing more than 35 mph(60 kph) but it accelerated fast to that speed , POSITIVELY SCAREY! forget the v8`s ride in a model T.

  • ha ha retarding the spark lol

  • @210johndeere grow up

  • @fairyheli2 its a joke if ya cant handle a joke then gfym

  • great video. Thanks for showing it.

  • i love old time cars !!! thanks for shareing the video you did really good ...and thanks you for posting it up

    have a great summer !

  • Good info! It'll help keep the few T's out there running longer...

  • One of my relatives wrote about how to start a Model T in his book. My aunt who is still living knew this trick from her farm days in Indiana when I mentioned it. Jack up a rear wheel of the car. Read the book: From horses to horsepower : life in Kansas, 1900-1925

  • Beautiful car and excellent video - 5*****

  • i just bought a 1916 model t and i live in philly. this video with the winter we just had couldnt have been more helpful. thanks

  • Could you use synthetic oil so it's easier to start? Or is synthetic oil not good for these types of engines?

  • there is no oil filter on a T,

there was no use for it , its a spash system from the mains,

Plus theres no place to put one, henry made them as simple as he could and as relible as he could,

so the baverage mancould work on it and understand it,

  • Thanks edison; from Mr. Mehoff.

  • Where is the oil filler on a ford model T? I know that there are two oil petcocks under the car by the drain plug. Does the differential use grease or oil? Where is the lubricant put in for the differential?

    Thanks

  • These cars had no neutral in the transmission, thus you had to start them with the clutch engaged. If the clutch oil was cold, the car would try to move while you were cranking it. Some people found it easier just to jack up one rear wheel.

  • When the left pedal is push all the way down it tightens a band around the rotating low gear drum causing it to stop. Since the drum can no longer rotate the power from the engine is redirected through a series of gears to the drive shaft. With the hand lever moved all the way forward and the left pedal fully released this enguage the clutch which makes a direct connection from the engine to the drive shaft putting the car in high gear. If you pull the lever to the middle this disenguages both.

  • nice vid! 5/5 stars
