I just love watching Mary sing and play. She has a beautiful dignity and peace about her that is impossible to feign. I think it must be God shining through her music. Inspiring!
Such purity of voice- so beautiful and moving . I always believed that she had a special talent and deserved far more recognition !! It makes you wonder when so many less talented singers being marketed so much and believe it that the power of marketting cannot be underrated - so you could call it the' big sell' Talent is only incidental to the imagery that being pushed on the public !!!!.
What wonderful memories this brings, of the time when Mary lived near Andover in Hampshire.I got to know her at our local Church and with my husband,Bill we saw lots of her concerts. We used to correspond but sadly lost touch when she married and moved away. Wonderful to hear you again Mary. God bless you.
This is great. I'd love to hear someone do a patient mash-up of this video with some hard beats that come in and fade down and then come back. -- and add sample her voice to echo and repeat.
The other day while gathering together Mary's papers for the Irish Music Library at Boston College I happened on a B/W photo you gave Mary in 1982. You had travelled from Holland for the concert. By the way, the Dec 2008 issue of Dutch Folk Harp magazine devotes several pages to Mary, her life and work. She remembers you and sends greetings. She goes to Canada to give talks next week. Padraig
@padraig1935 Dear Padraig & Mary. Its not until now(year later)that I discover your reply!!Must have missed an email.Indeed I crossed to the UK in 1982 to see Mary on stage for the first time in my life.Being a fan since 1964..when 14 yrs! All my life until today embracing her songs like The quiet land of Erin, the shawl from Galway etc.Can you imagine how it was for a fan to walk with her over the Felixstowe-prom,receiving her book signed later by mail.sweet memories remain.Thank you!Koos Riedyk
I wonder if Padraig1935 refers to Mary"s birthyear?! I know she was born at Easter in County Sligo 1935! Buying my first M.o'H-record in 1964 and listening to her ever since. From the first period with the endless breathcontrol(a classical
singer alike)in Irish/Scottish songs until the "new" (post-period)with old and new material Still with that enormous
breathcontrol and voice-purity.I hope she is well at 74 yrs by now! Met her in 1982 in Felixstowe,U.K.on tour.Love from Holland - Koos Riedijk
