Latvia has only existed since 1918 and before that it was imperial Russian territory. Add to that the language of the SU was Russian for 50 years and spoken by Latvians too - including LV ministers and generals who went to university in Moscow.

This is why on official documents, such as marriage certificates, you will find Latvian and Russian - with Latvian in first place. Russian is still the first language for many Latvians, whatever its official status that is the language they still choose to use. The book I am reading right now is "Latvia in World War II" by Valdis O. Lumans. That is starting to answer a few questions of mine. A very interesting read.
Stahlecker often complained of ethinic latvian inertia to be a part of any of the massacres.

@39rc6cf "SS Legion" .. the Legion was formed in 1943 to fight the soviets (first action was in November 1943) ... the atrocities took place mostly in 1941, then into 1942. The Legions had nothing to do with the atrocities (although Arajs etc did voluntarily join the Legion). The Legions fought the soviets (then naively also thought they could fight the germans after). You should read why the germans picked Latvia as the killing fields. All of north-east europe is a cemetery thanks to 2 parties

@FireKatniss Firstly, the language laws refer not to speaking non-Latvian in everyday life but for people working for the state - including the five bus drivers who got fined for replying in Russian to passengers who asked them questions in Russian.
Latvia has only existed since 1918 and before that it was imperial Russian territory. Add to that the language of the SU was Russian for 50 years and spoken by Latvians too - including LV ministers and generals who went to university in Moscow.

This is why on official documents, such as marriage certificates, you will find Latvian and Russian - with Latvian in first place. Russian is still the first language for many Latvians, whatever its official status that is the language they still choose to use. Maybe the people who attacked you were poor because they are discrimiated against by their country: Latvia.

I am British and have no particular loyalties to either Russians or Latvians.
What I am seeing about Latvia is her ruling elite obsessing over the preservation of Latvian culture/identity, yet incapable of doing much else for her citizens. Non-Latvians in particular. From what I am reading (non-Russian sources) I realise Latvia is a mess. I wish it wasn't, but it is I'm afraid. The general poverty and hopelessness seems worse than in Greece.

For example the British War Crimes Act of 1991, specifically defines a war crime as a crime committed by the Germans or on German occupied territory. That means that if during the War 25,000 allied officers were murdered by somebody other than the fascists, that is not a crime. And for your information independent Latvia was actually anti-German, at least after K. Latvians who supported them was few and while there were was Latvian political regime in Latvia (democracy at first and then so to say mild authoritarian regime) Jews were not threatened in any way. On the contrary, Latvia was a refuge for hundreds of Austrian Jews after 1938 when other countries did not want to accept them (in 2010 book about this was published in Latvia).
So all responsibility lies with occupation regimes - Nazi as well as Soviet.

@39rc6cf "SS Legion" .. the Legion was formed in 1943 to fight the soviets (first action was in November 1943) ... the atrocities took place mostly in 1941, then into 1942. The Legions had nothing to do with the atrocities (although Arajs etc did voluntarily join the Legion). The Legions fought the soviets (then naively also thought they could fight the germans after). You should read why the germans picked Latvia as the killing fields. All of north-east europe is a cemetery thanks to 2 parties
