Serbs gave it the "Illyrian Sheepdog" name in '39 because they sought to distance themselves from Austria and Germany (Illyria is the entire region across the Adriatic from Italy). During Yugoslavia, the name was changed to "Sar Planinac" where the breed is used the most.

This dog is called "Deltari Iliri" wich in english means "Illyrian Sheepdog" and its Bred for centuries in the Kosovo . This breed is 2500 years older and is descendent of the great fighting and war dogs of ilyrian tribes. One thing I really hate is when people try to steal a dog breed from its country of origin. Design your own dog breeds you fucking thieves. The Sarplaninac comes from around the border of south Serbia and north Macedonia.
This has happened before. Americans stole the pit bull terrier from England and named it the American pit bull terrier.
Someone should set the sarplaninacs on you fucking Albanian thieves.

Sarplanina is where the breed is used most. It was first named the Illyrian Shepherd because they sought to differ themselves from Austria and Germany.

This dog has nothing to do with Albania, what the hell?
It was bred in south Serbia (known as Servia), Montenegro and Macedonia during Ottoman occupation. Serbs gave it the "Illyrian Sheepdog" name in '39 because they sought to distance themselves from Austria and Germany (Illyria is the entire region across the Adriatic from Italy). During Yugoslavia, the name was changed to "Sar Planinac" where the breed is used the most.
Which part of that story has anything to do with Albanians?

@adrastea99 hmmm the part that its still mostly raised by albanians shepherds in kosovo, albania and albanians that live in fyrom and montenegro, look this breed is present in the most secluded areas of north albania, although it was a breed created in the 19 century its origin is much older, so its almost completely a native breed, and guess who inhabited and still inhabit the areas were it is still raised?

@adrastea99 I have a Sharplaninatz bitch too. I think Sharplaninatz is in fact descended from Turkish Shepherd Dog, Karabash that was brought over, together with all good things, by the Ottoman Turks during their conquest of the region. They are very similar in appearance and character.

This race certainly has caucasian origins but not for nothing called Illyrian dog, because they used from illyrian-dardanian, people who lived in that area (now kosovo) and not from Serbian & Macedonian .
