Im going to Thailand for backpacking soon and this surely helps, BTW its a way easier for Asian to learn Thai then my westerner friends do. With Chinese as first language, I can easily pronunce all five tones perfectly while my Aussie friend couldn't even tell the difference in tone between each word.

As always, the pronounciation is quite difficult. English and Spanish are on very different branches of the language family tree. Japanese pronounciation is difficult to grasp as well. Still, this is incredibly helpful and your English is fantastic as well.

As for the formal / informal grammar discussion . . . what is so frightening about learning other languages is the fact that there is not always a clear-cut, "correct" answer. Just use all of the sources you can to be well-rounded. :)

@fudogchomp sadly not. vietnamese is a one syllable language similar to mandarin, thai is rather complex and as the girl above in the video shows, has very long combi-words. i can't tell you about lao as never been there or had a reason to learn the language...
