A couple of years ago I also had an AMD 1800+ and somehow the cpu fan was failing, so the processor was getting too hot in a couple of minuten and the system wasn't shutting down automatically by overheat protection.... but thanks to coretemp my system was shutting down properly by reaching 80C... ;D

@Unasigad really, all you need is the power supply, and a way to turn it on, like using a IO interface. aka on off switch.
