Oy, these tutorials are getting really useless. You keep using plugins I don't have! On top of that you don't tell me I can just use some random plugin for the FX. My god, at least show me that I can start making sounds right away with the damn virtual keyboard - it only takes one key shortcut to get it: ALT-B. In the menus:View->Show Virtual MIDI keyboard.
Dear author:
Boring, you need to spice it up a little by letting people play with the program and hear some sounds!Virtual Keyboard!
These are for people who already have a experience in this shit. They are rather informative and not for dipshits who don't know wtf they are doing. l2makemusic and if you don't have the plugin then dont bother watching the video.
You forgot that this is a TUTORIAL not an ADVANCED TUTORIAL. If somone is "already experienced in this shit", then they don't need a tutorial. My argument is valid.
Shinny, try trolling the chat rooms - you get faster responses.
@ButtyNutter Last time i checked, this tutorial was free. It's not nice to bitch at people for going out of their way to try to help other people for free. And this tutorial is on how to use this specific software. I think he does assume that you have experience in other similar programs. I thought that this was a well layed out, easy to understand tut. It is your lack of knowlege that prevents you from understanding this. Good day sir.
@endcamp05 Yep! Try rightclicking your MIDI clip and selecting "Apply track FX to items as new take". Note that this won't quite work on multitimbral synths, like if say you have several Kontakt MIDI tracks - I'm sure there's some way to get that to work but I personally haven't figured it out yet. But it'll definitely work if you have a normal synth and its MIDI clips are all on the same track.
@Cutrexxx I'm not quite sure what you mean by "group channel", but if you're talking about buses, you can parent any track to any other. Effects and track settings will propagate to the child tracks.
You can make any track, any effects chain, or any group of tracks into a preset. Ctrl+S within the FX window for effects, and rightclick--> Save Tracks As Track Template for tracks.
So now you've got 16 tracks for the one instrument Kontact. I have never written 16 parts for one instrument. Please explain why one would need 16 tracks for one instrument.
As you seem to know alot about reaper I was wondering if you could think of any draw backs reaper has...
I personally remember being constantly reminded of input/output limitations when I used to use Protools (i.e. LE has less than HD) oh and the extremely anoying Dongle use to control plugins from one machine to another.
Would be interested in hearing any such criticism you might have for reaper before I decide to invest my £150+.
@FlamingCuntLips There are several things I prefer Sonar and Vegas for over Reaper actually, it depends on what you're doing. For audio editing, Reaper hands down. But for MIDI, I much prefer Sonar's far more streamlined way of using VSTs and its piano roll (I hate the Logic-style clip-based PRV that Reaper uses), as well as its better handling of changing and uneven time-signature. For editing audio to video, I prefer Vegas for its more stable video handling. Sonar also has a better autotune.
@Henkera Good question, simple answer is that you'd need it for using multiple audio outputs or multiple MIDI channel inputs*. If you're talking polyphony as in playing more than one note at a time, then no, you don't need multiple outs and can have your MIDI track and your synth track be one and the same.
* (Actually, you can get fancy with assigning individual notes to different channels, but there's no real reason to. It's just an ancient legacy feature of GeneralMIDI)
@RogetMusic Hi. Thanks for the upload, I appreciate it!
Also wanted to clarify: polyphony only means something that can play more than one NOTE at a time ON THE SAME CHANNEL. You are actually describing "Multi-Timbrallity", or a multi-timbral instrument, not polyphony. This means something that can output more than one ENTIRE INSTRUMENT (which could be ind. pieces of an orchestra or simply a different synth preset) ON SEPARATE CHANNELS. 'Multi-out' plug-ins are multi-timbral.
@Henkera what he means is so that say for example in dubstep, you want to create a really phat bassline. This is usually achieved by setting up 2 or more synths, each with slightly different patch settings. Now, if you can control this all with one midi track, bam! Simplified :)
how do i get VST's that didn't come with Reaper to work? and how do i get my korg padKontrol to work as the input? i seem to be missing something here...
@7:50ish.. you said it was all done.. but it looks like your parent Kontakt folder is still receiving audio while you were talking.. that would mean one or more tracks still are routing audio rather than midi
@ThaRedRoom Heh good eye! Never noticed that myself, but don't worry it doesn't actually matter. The MIDI tracks still are looking at MIDI as their input, which is actually all that matters. The buses are routing from Kontakt internally through the i/o settings, and those folder tracks are just generic Reaper tracks so it doesn't really matter what they do - they're just for organization.
4-pt2 was a runthrough of manually setting up multitimbral, multi-out synths. I can still do that one eventually, but for the moment you can accomplish this with the "Easy Method" listed here.
I've been a bit too busy with gigs lately but will continue with more detailed tutorials as soon as possible.
Wow, this is so confusing, I'll have to rewatch that over and over. Oh and by the way, I get no sounds with my MIDI, I use the asio for all drivers, but I don't know if it's a good thing or not. Anyway, the answer might be in the video I just didn't notice it. nice work
Hm, well a few things could be happening. For starters, ASIO4ALL only allows one program to have sound at a time. That would explain if you have no sound at all in REAPER.
Do you get playback when entering notes in Piano roll? If not, your routing my be faulty (try the "simple method" to doublecheck).
If you do get Piano roll sound but no sound from a keyboard, check that you have monitoring on, the MIDI track is armed, and your keyboard is enabled in prefs (ctrl+P, "MIDI devices").
I should point out I'm using Reaper 3.161 64bit on Windows Vista for these tutorials. I always update immediately whenever new patches are available, which those of you who already use Reaper know happens very frequently. :-)

@RogetMusic Would that be a way to do drum pads as separate synth notes? As for a reason to do individual notes to different channels.
