it's NOT like a cross-bow at all. A cross-bow is just like a regular bow laid on it's side attached to a track. a balista has a much greater potentential.
Im actually just finishing a ballista myslef. i machined my own gear and cog. i made my frame out of 2x6s and used 50ft of poly propelene rope per each skein. i also made it so that it pivots up and down. side to side. only took me 1 month to design. i painted it black and the rope makes it look like a hornet so i dubbed it THE HORNET.
Ballista gets power from torsion of the ropes

It is a really dangerous thing to use a ballista in this dimensions when the materials aren't strong enough to hold these powers.

a ballista is different from a crossbow because it uses torsion, a crossbow stores energy in it's limbs

The clanking thing, is a cog. It used to stop the weapon fireing by accident.Think of it as a safty catch.
