The US national debt is actually $59 trillion when you account for unfunded Medicaid, Medicare, Social Security, and similar promised obligations. It's amazing how every corporation in the world is taught to count promised spending as debt but for some reason the US doesn't follow those rules.

There is a fundamental difference. Much of the debt from WW2 was in the form of war bonds which were owed to Americans. Today, the bulk of our debt is owed to foreigners (e.g., China).

It divides out to something like $13,000 per household, but that isn't going to be paid this year. In reality it will probably never be paid, instead we just work on paying the interest and hope the global economy keeps growing forever. If it doesn't we cancel the debt in the massive crash and start over. It's just accounting.
